Watching in July 2021. I like the wick mod. Seems functional. Also, I see how you’re raising the chimney, to reinstall the globes. I used to watch my grandfather with his lanterns. You see that little metal loop at the top of each chimney? Ok. Grab the handle of your lantern and pick it up slightly off the table. Now, with the same hand you’re holding the lantern handle, use your middle finger and grab that smaller loop and pull up the chimney, allowing for your other hand to install the globe. Once it’s in place, slowly release the smaller finger loop and you’re done. Works on my Dietz no. 1’s 😁🏮 Thats what Grampa had too.

My parents used these when I was very little. This video helped me so much as thr instructions didn't even instruct how to turn off or how to raise the chimney and remove the globe. So thankful for your time. May God multiply your kindness unto you.

Watching in April 2024. I bought an oil lamp about a year ago. I've loved the glow that it lights my romantic evenings with my wife. The factory wick burned out completely a few months ago and have had the most difficult time trying to replace it as I must have a really off sized lantern. After buying yet another set of wicks today and being disappointed again. I made one from carbon felt. Now I'll never have to buy another wick again. It works way way much better. Just wanted to share my discovery.

Thanks for this video. I've had a bit of trouble getting my Feuerhand to burn properly, but this type of cutting the wick not only made it emit more light, it also made it burn way more clean and stable, and stopped it from burning my wicks too fast. Thanks a lot!

@Designgirl2009 They don't produce heat actually like a kerosene heater or like a space heater because a space heater has a fan that blows the heat out, but there Is a tremendous amount of heat from these lanterns like if you hover over it, it can warm you pretty good. Better to say they warm you when you're close or right on top of them, the heat feels good, but they don't exactly warm a room. Maybe more than one in a room could warm it.

how you trim a wick has a lot to do with the lantern and the size wick it uses. If you try to cut your wick to a point in a Air Pilot for instance it will just sit a smoke. In that lantern a flat cut works best. In the #2 Champion it does best with a flat cut with the corners nipped off. What this means is you need to experiment on your particular lantern to see whats going to work best for it. Lanterns with a 7/8 inch wick usually don't do well cut to a point.

@bierstadt77
@bierstadt77 3 жыл бұрын
Agree 100%. Any of the 7/8" wick lanterns generally work optimally with a perfectly straight, square cut wick. If you cut it square, you will get a glimmering silver dollar sized and shaped flame that puts out an unbelievable amount of light. Additionally, each lantern has it's own idiosyncrasies. Even amongst the same model, some lanterns need a very slight angle cut on the wick. I think it has to do with imperfect manufacturing in general and specifically the flame spreader. Not all burners are the same either. You gotta experiment a little to find out what works best with your lanterns.

Yeah that’s true. I’ve experimented trimming them all sorts of ways. Pointy just makes the flame skinny and tall so they smoke a lot and really heat up the chimney so you have to keep them turned down. Probably works good in a lantern with tall glass. I keep mine flat with the corners nipped off. Just try it on whatever lamp you have.

I completely love oil lanterns too. I bought a nice cabin in the mountains, but can't use my lamps because they put out too much smoke. I've kept the flame small, which helps, but there still too much smoke/smell. Someone suggested FireFly Clean Fuel. But it's extremely expensive, and some reviewers report that there is no difference between that an cheap fuel. I'm willing to fork out the $ if it works. But I need to know if anyone would recommend it or another tactic. Thanks in advance for the guidance.

So the lesson I got from this video is: always read the comments - I think the other commenter, Carl Manx's depression era grandparents knew from long term experience. Their advice, to cut a V shaped notch into the wick, results in a sort of fanned out 'M' shaped 'twin' flame. Is it brighter? Yes, I think it is, but I also think you don't get something for nothing, so extra light = faster fuel consumption along the greater wick surface area. I still think the simple flat trimmed wick (giving my lamps a solid O shaped disk of flame at maximum output) has much going for it in terms of fuel/light efficiency but I can't say I rate the cone shaped wick advocated in this video one way or the other.
@FRMHEVN
@FRMHEVN 5 жыл бұрын
I think in a national crisis situation conservation would be priority. I would think more surface space equals faster fuel consumption. In a survival situation I will stick with flat but in a thriving America of old I would definitely enjoy that light to the fullest no doubt. Good to know though incase you ever needed maxium light for lets say operating on someone and such.

Now I use a Dietz 90 or 76 with purified paraffin .. safe to use and it throws enough heat to keep the inside comfortable without the monoxide possibility. I still crack a side window for some air as you can burn out the oxygen .. doubtful, but also a possibility. Anyway, this is a safe and easy way to heat a small space. @kimmer6 5 жыл бұрын
I think wicks are all made in China now. I special ordered some ''Premium'' 3/8'' wick for my Dietz 100's from England. Then got several rolls from China for cheap! I think the only difference was the the packaging. The wicks looked EXACTLY the same. The Chinese wick worked fine in a recent test of one lantern I fixed. It burned for 42 hours straight in my PG&E power company lantern (the 100 means 100 hours of fuel and burn time per tank). I had to leave the house so I extinguished it. I'm certain it would burn longer. Lanterns are my hobby. I have 100+ of them. What I noticed is that mixed fuel types will sometimes plug up a wick. Kerosene and citronella oil in a Dietz Jupiter visibly clogged the wick with a coating of what looked like crystallized honey. It lit but within 5 minutes the flame was spiky and it went out in 10 minutes. Lamp oil and kerosene mix gummed up several of my lantern wicks. With this many lanterns, some stay in storage 2+ years with fuel inside. Only this year did I start having wick troubles. Now I mark the bail with a bit of yellow, blue, or white electrical tape to indicate the fuel I used. Diesel, kerosene, or Klean Heat. Citronella goes in the Tiki torch with its 3/4'' fat fiberglass wick. Any time your lantern will not burn properly or needs constant fiddling with the wick knob...suspect a plugged wick. Sometimes they look perfectly normal but lost much of the capillary action they rely on. Another tip... Blow out the flame and look at the wick tip. If you see ANY red smoldering embers at all....you have a plugged wick even if it looks OK up close. Some very old 1900's barn find lanterns I got had very old wicks. They made the cotton strands much coarser back then. I save them all for grins but have a shoe box full of different sizes of wicks. I started draining fuel from my collector lanterns that will sit for long periods of time. Now I am in the habit of only filling a tank on my daily go-to lanterns to 1/8 to 1/4 full. No need to let it get stale. I hope this helps!

@@kimmer6 Not all wicks are alike. The cheap strips I got recently are a looser weave with a blue stripe and don't feed through my feuerhand 276 at all well. The original wick was thinner but firmer, like canvas, slightly narrower with a red stripe.
@kimmer6
@kimmer6 5 жыл бұрын
Both of my wicks from England and China were tightly woven with red stripe down the middle. I can't help but believe they were made in the same place. I just compared them side by side under a light. E bay has ''genuine Feuerhand'' wicks...some with red stripe, some with coarser weave dotted blue stripe. At least they give you a picture of what you are buying. The shop from England has the burner and the coarse blue wick..the hootflip guy. Nuddnick has the tight weave red stripe wick and burner. Whatever works for you......

crabtrap Kerosene works reliably all the time. It just has that odor to it. I don't notice odor when burning my Coleman 239-C kerosene mantle lanterns. They are used outdoors only. I have one Dietz No 8 Air Pilot wick lantern that has never burned anything but Calif highway diesel fuel since new. Diesel also burns reliably with no smoke and I think it even burns with less odor than many other fuels. I got away with burning diesel for 2 hours in a cold garage and the odor was minimal. I would stick with kerosene on all of them....one fuel. Note that mixing fuels sometimes makes a sticky mess on the wick and the lantern will sometimes refuse to burn. Citronella mixed with kero after 12+ months of storage turned into a goo that made the wick look like it was full of Gorilla Glue and the flame went out in 3 minutes. It took carb cleaner to wash out the tank, a new wick, new fuel to make it burn all night long with no adjustments.

Are you supposed to stick the end of the wick into the oil before lighting it? My flame keeps going out no matter how high I raise or lower it. I am using olive oil and allowd 3/4 of the four inch wick to soak in the oil, but the tip of the wick was dry when I lit it.

2QUICK Olive oil belongs on your salad. It varies too much in viscosity and contents to safely say its OK to reliably burn in lanterns. Some brands work, many are mixes of cotton seed oil and every thing else to make a profit. Olive oil is never filtered as well as kerosene or lamp oil. A lantern depends on capillary action to move the fuel up to the burner. If its not delivering fuel, the flame goes out. If you have to mess with the wick knob to keep it burning, your wick is plugged up. Spiky flames, sputtering, too frequent adjustment, and red embers glowing on a wick after you blow it out indicate a bad wick that should be tossed out. Your best bet would be to dump the olive oil clean out the tank with acetone, DRY IT until there is no more acetone smell and refuel with lamp oil. Replace the wick with a new one as well. You should be able to burn for a minimum of 2 hours without moving the wick knob. My Feuerhand 276 burned for 15 straight hours last night without adjusting the wick. The flame went from 1 inch tall down to 1/4'' in all of that time. Just barely turning the knob put the flame back to 1'' high. I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this. My new lamp i just lit had embers once the flame went out. Since it is my first one I wasn't sure if that was normal or not. Thankful for giving folks like you that share their knowledge. 🤗⚘

Really, come now. Why on earth would you use olive oil when there are much cheaper oils specifically designed for use as a lighting fuel?

But that cut consumes a lot of fuel and burns the wick down faster. Now, if the wick channel were also pyramid shaped then Bingo.

i've got a small oil lamp thats like 50 years old and it has a hole at the bottom of it. why? theres nothing that can screw onto and nothing should be missing. the oil will just spill out of it i think, so i haven't even tried it yet till i find out why theres a hole there

What brand? How big a hole? Some center draft lamps get their combustion air through the base up the hole in the middle. I'd fix that sucker for you in a minute if I was there. Lamps and lanterns are my thing and I have over 100 of them. Tell me more.....

I have always been an arch trimmer with great results and I will try this. However an arch using the same three outer points of a pyamid does have a longer line. Which creates a hole in your logic. I'm hoping that either you have dumbed down the science for us or there is another aspect to this that you aren't aware of. I have also seen an inverted V trim, which would have an even longer line....it accures to me that perhaps these trims are something made possible or necessary by the proliferation of the newer "lamp oils", which I gather are either mineral oil based or some kind of modified kerosene, having different burn characteristics than plain kerosene. Hmmm.
