Traditional macaroni pie does not contain seasonings, onions and all the other vegetables and stuff. But people are free to do what they want. Macaroni is macaroni. The other stuff is called penne pasta. I make macaroni pie with macaroni, cheese, milk, a bit of salt and no white sauce. Sometimes I add a bit of mustard, and every so often, eggs. The trick is in how you mix and add the ingredients. For me the best is to top off the pie with cheese, after having mixed grated cheese into the pie. Bake in a covered dish. When it is baked remove cover so that top of pie gets a bit of colour. Please do not overload the baking dish as the finished product becomes difficult to cut and remove without falling apart.
