The creative struggle is there for many of us. I've been building ships, stopped, stepped back, and hated the way it looked only to tear it apart and start over. I've spend hours just figuring out how I was going to make an airlock work on a ship in a way that I liked. Take a walk around the house or at a park and let your head clear.

One of the more honest episodes.It's nice to see that "The struggle is real". We keep asking ourselves "Why is it so easy for them, and so difficult for me?" The answer is: "It's difficult for everybody, so suck it up!". You keep struggling, and I'll keep learning from you.

I think having lore around the entrance could help to bring you ideas. Like what you did with the asteroid and base. Your rovers will need a place to park if they stop by that building, maybe incorporate some parking bays where the pipe goes down by the entrance? Also, you won't really NEED an entrance on all four sides. The side with the pipes could be the "back" and the other side visible from the base could have the grand entrance
@mcribbs
@mcribbs 12 күн бұрын
Why take the pipes in on the same side as the entrance??? That doesn't feel like the way an actual building would work, the pipes would enter to the side of back from where the main entrance would be. You're making things harder for yourself by trying to find a compromise design that's not realistic.
@maartenrietman87
@maartenrietman87 12 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's what I thought aswell. Separate the entrance from the pipes, looks more realistic and is easier to make it look good.

Yes, you could make it a complex structure of pipes to make it look really industrial. And have the main entrance on the side facing your base (or have all 3 other faces have the same nice open entrance). I don't know what block types there are, but at the part where you had the rounded off parts: are there half height blocks of these? Or as some typical industrial places might have some kind of fences?

Maybe take the pipes out of the other end of the base, and bring them down on the side of the drilling building instead of trying to get them through the main door.

Actually, if you look at images of buildings in mountain faces, utilities come out the opening made for construction. Nothing wrong with the pipes in front connecting to the eventually running ice mine.

Thanks for this update Skye! These kind of days are an essential part of the creative process, even though we rather forget about them. I really appreciate you taking us along for the bumpy bit of the ride as well here. As others have already suggested, I think the solution might be to separate functions. Keep this side as the pipe acces, with maybe a rather uncomplicated maintenance entrance for personnel and have the grand entrance on another of the straight sides and a rover bay on yet another side, maybe a ship dock on the last one? It will also add interest to the building as a whole: while the main structure maintains its symmetry, these entrances can be detailed very specifically for each purpose.

Hey Skye, what about bringing the pipes in from the side instead of an entrance? You could also bring them in further upwards, so that Rovers van drive underneath...
@marcusretaken72
@marcusretaken72 12 күн бұрын
I do like where you left it. You could build a "Pump House" where the pipes go under the ice as a control point in the pipeline. This where it makes sense why it goes under ground and maybe even a few connectors at the pump house for security ships (or drones) to dock...
@markdomansky7046
@markdomansky7046 12 күн бұрын
sometimes simplicity looks better. How about just bringing the pipes all the way into the building at the same height you built them. Then just decorate the entrance a bit. You've got so many other things going on, simplify that and it won't look as busy.

Ambitious Skye! Why not use one conveyer pipe and sorters? Save resources, time, pcu, and your computer. 😉. You only need ammo one way and ice going the other way(or hydro and O2). You can make a circular bypass at 1 point near the ice house. That leaves the option to use the main line unlimited for future additions.

i would put the pipes into the arches, your arches are at least 3 wide making space for the conveyor pipes in the middle. push it one more block forward into the base

I know you didn't seem thrilled with it here 7:00 but this entry looks awesome so far. The inland pipes look great in the ice. Your use of armor blocks look great too for traversing with a rover across the entry pipes. As for the pipes themselves, you could throw catwalks over them or substitute them with reinforced pipes to make the floor more seamless

Hey Skye - maybe you could build a bigger structure, where the pipes go lower to the water level. Something like a pump station, where the pipes go straight into the wall and inside they can go lower and into the channel.
@JasonW.
@JasonW. 12 күн бұрын
I was considering something along that line. It may be he wants to keep the pipes in view? I'd prefer to let them fade into the structure, and let the structure be its own thing, and not something attached to the pipes.

Widen the slopes either side of the sunken pipes maybe.... My thinking is the only reason you'd need to have the sunken pipes is for a rover to drive over it, also widening it will bring it more in line with the width of the front of the building and help with the symetrics of the building
@DarkDodger
@DarkDodger 12 күн бұрын
I agree with widening. This is supposed to be some kind of entranceway, possibly for vehicles, and it just seems flimsy. Imagine driving onto that from the side and turning into the structure, you'd have to be super careful. Make it wider, that way you can play around with the shape a little as well.

Hi skye. An idea for the entrance could be too. Contour it like the opposite sides of the piers but in the style you had it going down already for consistency. But make that section hinge up and open as your door way. But block off behind the pipes so it opens between them. Hope that makes sense and helps. As for the bit you did to get the pipes in and covering with catwalk looks good. So your as always on the right path bud. Keep on keeping on 👍🏻

Skye, You are doing amazing work, thank You. As for ideas, here aremy humble suggestions: 1. Pipes should not enter the building by main entrance, it's industrial standard to separate resources access from personnel access. So if we assume this is a side wall, not a main wall, You can simply raise them and get through the wall, like regular industry would. So, horizontal above ice to the wall, up above drills level, through the wall, up again. This will also let You to simply build up the wall, and decorate pipes entry point. 2. White flat something You've built today would not be necessary. Also in real life pipes are never laid directly on the ground, for multiple reasons. 3. Inside the building pipes can double as decorations, run them on the ceiling in room below control room, around pistons column and split to turrets emplacements (great idea btw). And on the ceiling You can place more than one pipe in parallel, it doesn't even have to be connected - You'll have green and yellow lights on them. Separating them by upside down catwalk will add a nice touch too. 4. Drop hinges idea, I don't see it working. Keep building, I can't wait to see next update! 👍👋

Hi Skye! This is an epic build. As a suggestion to the entranceway, have you tried, where the pipes turn 90deg into the mine, making one shorter, one longer, so that they then go straight into where the pipes enter the mine. This would leave a long path as wide as the entranceway. Maybe dont sink the pipes so they act like walls? Keep up the fantasic work!

I think you were *very* close. Rather than having only the outside rounded and the top flat, use the rounded corner pieces and the quarter-cylinders to eliminate the large flat area around the pipes (the only cube would be the one between the pipes). I think that might look pretty decent.

Just started watching your Shagger series. Totally enjoy it. Not sure if anyone has told you are you have seen, a nice Vanilla way to work in a straight line is using a Projector. In Creative created a straight line how ever long you want, save it as a Blueprint (need a control panel on a block). In you survival game build the Projector and use you block line projection. When tunneling just keep the projection in view and you will go in a straight line.

Dear Skye! I've watched your videos from Timberborn and love them, this series is an absolute blast, I was going to try and keep the tempo of your "Dear Skye PIEW" but I can't figure it out. Have you thought of having the pipes not go into an entrance? Lots of buildings have an entrance and then have machinery taking up a whole wall. So if you just make it look like some sort of industrial zone at those pipes, the entrance could be anywhere else. Potentially you could make like a sheath going from the building to the first brace, because that transition might be a difficult problem.

That pedestal you made for the pipes, I think it might look better if you add a curve for the top corner - use those quarter curves vertically, and add the curved corner pieces in the corners. Not sure if I'm being clear, but make that whole thing look like half a pill.

Great job, I admire your patience and joy with which you overcome your creative challenges every day to be happy with yourself, but at the same time you make it terribly complicated. I have to agree with the guy who said that pipes rarely go in through the front door. I think it will be a lot easier to find a design you like if you make the entrance separate from the pipe connection area. It is at least worth considering if you still do not like how this combo design has turned out.

The building is looking amazing. My idea, would require a lot of work, and redoing just about all of the outside piping, but hear me out. If you have a 2 or 3 block wide stairway (whichever ends up being properly centered) running down from the bottom of the landing platform (centered on the middle red stripe), you could have one pipe coming out of each red stripe (from the closest edge) and running over to the stairs. Transition from 4/5 blocks wide piping to 3 blocks wide piping where it meets the entryway section. Inlay the entire entryway piping into the ice and make it like a roadway up to the Ice harvesting structure. This could be the cooling system for the base, and if some maintenance tunnels are put in, an entrance for if you run out of hydrogen. Play with colors to give some of the pipes a hot/cold look. For the stairway piping can cover top and bottom with sloped blocks leaving the sides open to see the pipe running down. For the pipes going directly into the harvester, just run them through the bottom and work out the interior piping from there. Like I said, a lot of work.

you could lower all the pipes by one and use that route as a road with the platforms covering the pipes, using the smooth textures. as an idea, then at the base of the mountain you could build the ground vehicle lift just off that road, and it would allow for on and off ramps. :D lovely stuff though

About the entrance... I personally think the round blocks idea you had was pretty good. What it needed was a wider platform in front of the entrance. Imagine there are rovers going back and forth around that entrance. First of all they would need a wider platform so it's more level and not just like a speed bump. And the round blocks would be like some thicker armor protecting the pipes so they don't get run over by the rovers. Also as you kinda mentioned in the end, the platform should be 1 block shorter so it doesn't get so close to the pipes support structure. As for the main building, I thought you could do the ice processing in there and only have hydrogen and oxygen storage up in the mountain. This way you won't clog up your mountain storage with ice. Question: Do you plan on building a rover at some point? That would be some great fun... 😆

9:36 You really should take an in-depth look at all the structural blocks available to you. There are enormously good looking and meticulously detailed blocks that I think would look extremely good on that. I'm talking about the interior wall blocks, which have piping, inset lights and everything else interesting. Then there are the textures. I think a concrete texture would look very good on that even with those plain armour blocks. Even more, there are trusses and scaffolding (if you have the DLCs) and armor plates and... plethora of possibilities.

Maybe you could terminate those things into some silos? That would make it look industrial, and fit with the theme while hiding the pipes, and you could do it on the other side to make symmetrical. Usually power plants have smaller silos, or you could go for more of an ag industrial look with larger silos with extra storage hidden in them. That’s my best idea to hide the pipes.

Be patient with yourself this has been a amazing build and I love the r & d elements showing where things don't go to plan. Sometimes when you come back after days like this you end up going in wild but awesome directions. Trust the process, with roadblocks you always manage to come up with something extraordinary that you wouldn't have considered if every thing went to plan. Also, if you do the rounded bit around the pipe entrance could you do it in half blocks? cuz I honestly think that would look neat. Oh and where the pipes enter the main threshold, can the block/armored whatever cube pipe be made white so it looks like the round pipe enters the threshhold and emerges from it? I don't have this game so I have a very limited idea of what is possible.

What if you did the same thing on 3 other points same distance out and with the pipe and add your large defensive turrets out there as well, you could use the two pipes and have two turrets per axis point. Use the largest cannons you can and then use the smaller calibre guns on the base itself.

Instead of full blocks you need rounded half high blocks, but that might be too big even for the port into the ice. Quarter high would be what is called for, but I don't thing SE has it yet (and with SE2 in the works I don't think it will come at all). I am sure you tried using a gate (a type of door) instead of the typical doors for the entrance, but an entrance is hard for something like that. Ideally there would be a caged ladder attachment that could stick to the blocks and have you climb to the actual room, as that seems the fitting way to handle an entrance on that sort of rig, but such a thing is hard to get such a physics engine to handle so things like that don't exist. Maybe the typical one tile of railing catwalk with a door up at the top and require people to use jet packs? Maybe hangar doors down below? I would build everything but the entrance then worry about it latter.

Dear Skye, Thank for all your content (beware of the burnout !!) Like a lot of comments why ynot separate the main entrance for rovers and ships facing the shagger base, and the piping in a very industrial way on the side ? .... des bisous

i think that the shape of what you made is grate and i think its the colour that needs changing with texture: example having rust or different gray colour as its mostly white and blue and its lacking variety, as everything looks too clean. look at models when painters use weathering textures (dry brushing) to create a story.

I am confused as to the purpose of the entrance, if it is for personnel access then to me it is too large, if it is for ships/rovers/machinery access then it is concerning that they enter at the drill level, it is likely they will crash into the drills or fall into the bore hole, for me it would make more sense to have the entrance above the current drill height and a ramp/stairs/elevator up to the entrance from the ice or an external loading bay at ice level. But of course, I don't have access to the evolving plan in your head, which is fine as it is your vision, and it usually looks very good in the end, this is not meant to be a criticism but something that might bring some additional thoughts to help move forward in the process. Keep up the good work.

I would have the door be part of the ramp for the entrance and on a hinge instead of having them be 2 separate things

Im kinda stumped, too. I dont have any good ideas for the pipe. My dumb idea was to make the pipe off center and have the right pipe come out straight into the corner while the left one will follow the right and turn in front of the entrance. Does this idea give you any ideas?

What about two landing pads on each side and have the pipes hidden in them

Hey Sky, left you an idea for the Ice House in the comments yesterday. Sorry you've got some creators block this time around, but you can push through it. Don't give up, you're vids, Dread Mechanic's vids & Engineered Coffee's vids make my work week suck a little less. Gives me ideas for something to do when my days off come around too😉👍

What is the time between your posting the day's video and the start if recording the next? Sometime I wonder if comments come too late for action in the next segment?

it might have looked better if it was angular rather than rounded, as everything around it (other than the pipes) was angular. a 45 degree sloping pipe would look great (instead of the 90 degree to 90 degree ones to change level that is currently there), not sure if such a thing exists in the game however.

Skye, can’t you just put the entrance somewhere else? you have 7 other sides, keep that side for the pipe work as it was originally above ground.. you’re never really going to need to go in to the bottom part with the drills are you so it shouldn’t matter which side the entrance is located? ❤

Sky I’m wondering but on the mining contraption there is obviously a gap in between to accommodate the multiple spinning mechanisms but due to the gap once it goes down a certain amount will it still be able too due to the bar at the top or will there be a pillar of ice that doesn’t get mined and stops the bar making the whole thing stop working?

Maybe try ChatGPT image generation with description in order to give you any ideas of how to incorporate the pipes in the building.

Those Problems are why i do not do those creative games anymore. I try something, it sucks. I try to improve. It sucks more. I put it back to how it was before. It sucks even more somehow.
