I ended up fixing mine following your video but marked the wheels before removing them to replace the belt. I had to insert washers on the sagging silent blocks to enhance the laser plate. This machine was the first B&O CD player. It’s really well built with a Burr Brown 16bits dac and it is really pleasant to listen to. Now my B&O system is complete : Beomaster 5000 with a hinged facade hiding the main controls ( over the 5500 that has a fix facade), Beocord 5500 excellent, Beogram 5500 with the tangentiel arm and the famous expensive MMC4 cartridge, the Beogram CD50 and the fantastic passive loudspeaker Beovox MC120.2 - and the unmissable Master Control Panel 5000 that let you control from your sofa any fonction of any element of the system and also program hours of music from any sources...I am a happy man. Happy new year 2022 - today 2022-01-02

You fell in love with B&O !!! such a nice gear and design, the 70 to 80s period was amazing. I would abolutely try to build a complete system, next the beogram !!!!
@Stoney3K4 жыл бұрын
This machine was very ahead of its time -- hard to imagine it was built in 1985. If you connected it to the matching system amplifier (Beomaster 5000) it would start playing automatically when you switched the system on via the remote, or switch on the amplifier if you selected 'PLAY'.
@38911bytefree4 жыл бұрын
@@Stoney3K The remote was GORGEOUS also ... not sure if the 5000 series, but I think it was bidirectional, I mean, you could read some info on the remote like tape counter or station ... NOT SURE. What amazes me more is the beogram 4002 .... it blew my mind on the complexity to be an early 80s turntable. I was about to buy one, but cartridges are not cheap and getting dificult to find. One of these piece ended in the MOMA ... logically.

B&O products were always beautifully designed. Performance-wise they were no better than most other mid-range brands, but in terms of aesthetics, they were second to none. I think it's fair to say that B&O were the Apple of their era. Even today their stuff is incredibly desirable. I wish somebody made products that combined beauty and functionality like that these days, but sadly we all live in a world where everything is designed to be disposable and built down to a price, but I firmly believe that there IS still a market for quality, like Apple used to be while Steve Jobs was still alive - sadly since his untimely death, even Apple is now just selling poorly-made and poorly-designed products that are at least as unreliable as the cheap Chinese competition (even more so in many cases). Sad really :(
@Stoney3K4 жыл бұрын
@@38911bytefree The Beosystem remote (Terminal 5000) was bidirectional, but it was also an enormous piece, about the size of an iPad. The Gram 4002 was a magnificent model but it was also overly complex if you compare it to the later tangential turntables like the 6000 or even the first series 9000 system. Still, being a microprocessor controlled tangential, quartz locked direct drive turntable in the early 1970s is an achievement worth mentioning.

@@countzero1136 It's kind of accepted that Apple borrowed from B&O. The first iPod's circular wheel control is apparently very similar to an innovation B&O made on their telephones. Steve Jobs also had B&O systems in his home so he was obviously aware of them and admired them.

The "splattered paint" is normal and was done at the factory.That's conductive paint that was used for RF shielding. BTW, this machine was B & O's first stab at a CD player. It was only in the line for a very short time. The transport and most of the electronics were made by AIWA. B & O added their own control circuitry, for control and interface. It used the early 3 beam laser system. Truth be told, it was an awful machine, prone to laser and motor failures, with many circuit revisions. It had marginal tracking, and some discs it just plain wouldn't play due to subcode issues. It only used a single D to A converter which was toggled between channels. I worked at B & O in their service division when it came out. An absolute nightmare to keep going. They abandoned it rather quickly and moved on to the Philips based CD5500, a far better machine.

Just a quick tip for any future repairs of this type Vince...ANYTHING that involves a Cam Gear is usually timing critical. If you dont have a service manual...ALWAYS mark the positions of all moving parts ascociated with the cam gear should be marked with a permanent marker (for reference prior to disassembly) to avoid the timing issues you experienced.Well done btw for successfully fixing this B&O CD.rgds Evan

I used to do VCR repairs in the early 80s and that was good advice then and still is today. Of course these days it's actually easier as we all have a high-resolution camera in our pockets to make a record of every step of the process :)

@@evanparton734 Yeah Panasonics could be a pain but one of the worst regular offenders were the mode switches on Toshiba VCRs - Really difficult to get to - you had to pretty much strip down the whole machine to get at them, resulting in lots of time and higher labour charges. I agree,I think the problem is your you're one cog out of alignment on the cog that moves the carriage and the cam connected to it ,it was making the carriage move in to far .If you keep it you may lose a cog as its now being held back by the screw who's job is to only adjust the door by a fraction to align it to look perfect on your stack

The number "1" on the right hand side of the display is the "index" number. It will normally only display one index marker on a CD. Some classical music CD's had more than one index point to help find different parts of very long tracks 👍
