I like how they handled Sprout. His sudden yet natural transition from timid deputy to power crazed dictator was so well done. I also appreciate how his own mother decided to avoid reprimanding him in any way, which also feels natural because she was an enabler to his fear mongering, but also avoid accepting or justifying his actions because she actively disagreed with what he had done.

I haven’t yet watched the video, but I wanted to comment early to potentially be seen. I remember when all Saber made was mlp content, and it’s so cool to see him being successful with what’s he’s currently pursuing. I met him at a convention (Ciderfest 2019), and he was super nice. I’m glad to see him put out a video for the movie, as it shows he hasn’t forgotten where he came from.

I thought it was the other way around, I thought 3D was cheaper to work on larger productions since u work with more deep assets while on 2D u cant reuse all of it, I thought that was the reason we dont have 2D movies anymore in the mainstream, now it's more like a nich thing

These days most 2D animation is made with rigs, just like in 3D, so many of the assets are reusable. That's why gen 4 looked so clean and smooth.

The big price question will come down to rendering. A lot of 2D & 3D programs can work in a similar way but can cost different amounts to render. If I make a 3D block I can project any image on it. If I put flat images on it it will lose its 3D visual but it was very easy to make. A lot of anime will do this for say a class room, bc they can just duplicate out the desks but make them look line drawn.

3d/CGI tends to be cheaper for theatrical productions- as you mention full set reuse is a huge asset and the basics of how you construct a 3d animation don't change through the quality jump from tv to film 2D puppet animation is cheaper than 3D because you also get the advantage of reuse while having less steps in the production process, overall, but if you say, compare the average MLP g4 tv episode to the movie, you'll notice that the animation style is vastly different- i guarantee they made totally new rigs and incorporated a lot more redraw into the process than in the show, where there were probably next to no redraws at all after like.. season 2, and if you want to go full, say, Klaus with film animation, that's immensely more expensive basically, for tv shows and tv movies, 2D is probably the way to get more polish for less money, 3D is less expensive for full theatrical film still (though they are evening out!! According to the director, Klaus, a fully 2D animated film with no rigging, just frame by frame art, was only marginally more expensive than a similar 3d film would have been) I think a lot of tv show commentators have a reflexive memory of the visual quality of early cgi tv shows like beast wars that makes them cringe at the thought of tv cgi because it did take so long to catch up as a pleasant visual experience (no shade to beast wars, the plot is genuinely good but you can't deny it's ugly)

2D is more expensive because it is a lot more work to do in a per frame basis while 3D is more expensive to render it good. Movie Animation in the west made the transition to 3D because it is faster to make it look good, faster to animate and as a result it's artists are paid less per frame (and because 3D movies were more well received in the 90's). 2D is better for low budget TV shows because it is less expensive to make a 2D animation look good enough than a low budget 3D one. Just compare Madagascar TV Series (2011) with Adventure Time (2010) to see this in practice. Just a notice: in the east, 2D is the mainstream because the majority of their animation market is for TV shows, because the asian public didn't care much for the rise of 3D animation and because they underpay A LOT their animators while making them work much more than they would in the west (it's similar to how triple A game developers treat their personel in the west).

I believe it takes more effort and in turn money to make 3D animation look good consistently and sure it may be cheaper to make a movie in CG then in 2D but if you want to make a series look great in CG it takes more money since your not just animating 1-2 hours of media your animating roughly 5 hours of media and that’s if it’s just 12 episodes

The theorists and analysts of the fandom have already started going to town on this movie trying to catch every single connection and reference they can. Did anybody else notice that the Pegasus and unicorn in the mural have a golden pair of wings and horn? Or how about the fact that Argyle had a picture of an ancient relic from the Equestria Girls series in his lighthouse (specifically, a relic that makes people/ponies forget about whatever the user wants them to forget). We’re going to be picking this movie apart for a while, and I’m nothing but excited for the new series coming out next year!

I felt like there’s a scene in the ending that everyone came together and put the lighthouse back the way it was (with the help of magic) but time and budget didn’t allow it. The thought that Sunny is now homeless is so sad. Or maybe they’re saving it for 44 minutes special coming later, discover more clues from secrets hidden in the lighthouse while they’re rebuilding it.

Honestly, I like how the movie looks, but I feel like the plot of the movie was really rushed. They just sorta showed up in places, "we need the MacGuffin" somebody gets it for them, and then at the end, (SPOILER ALERT) the MacGuffin was inside of us all along. I feel like everywhere they went wasn't a big journey, it was like, an hour's walk at most. There was just too much packed into a small space, I didn't really get time to appreciate any of the characters. The characters barely ever fought with eachother, they just got kind of bitter at one point and got over it because campfires or something. It wasn't a terrible movie for me, though. The movie looks great as I wrote before, and I really like the new direction the story is going in. I like that the problem they'll be facing is of a bigger scale this time, and that the characters aren't just copies of the last cast. I never look at the characters and think "oh that's the new Rarity" or "there's the new Fluttershy". I'm really hoping to learn a bit more about the characters in the upcoming series!

Although it's "contained" without big events or villains taking place, I actually enjoyed the movie more so. To me it was an "imaginary slice of life" scenario, which I completely adore. It allowed to focus on establishing character personalities and giving us a scoop of what's going on without it being too much.

the main thing that I noticed about the film was the animation, there was so much quality to it, one thing in particular (I noticed this in Riya and the last dragon too), was THE EYES and I don't just mean the colours or details, I mean the effort! they did that thing where the eyes actually moved when they were staying still, if there was ever a close up on the eyes they would be slightly flickering from side to side, taking in all the details! The quality of the animation I can't- (I also loved what they did to the hooves)

There was already a backstory in G4 where the Earth, pegasus, and unicorns were segregated and Equestria was founded when they united, and thousands of years later, they've blended in together perfectly. History rarely repeats itself but it often rhymes. One bad ruler chosen for good intentions can really isolate your country and make a horrific mess of things. I honestly like the way it went. showing that a good change rarely lasts forever and everything can break. we will see where this will go from now on, but people shouldn't expect a big focus on the history lessons as it will probably be something for us to discover. I always found it weird how fans are angry that the good Twilight times didn't last forever (and somehow assume it's twilights fault). You can't say it was all meaningless as there were probably generations of ponies living in those good times. This is a good backdrop for the new show as it lets them introduce similar lessons to those in G4 without making G4 a mandatory watch. They just want this gen to stand on their own and not be just a companion piece to G4 like most fans want.

I'm wondering if she's actually an alicorn, since that could almost be more magical and not a full transformation. The fact that the dynamic is at least 2 pegasi, one unicorn and either 2 earth ponies or 1 earth pony and an alicorn is weird. Unicorns felt underutilized in the story and their antagonist felt like a joke by comparison to the other two villainous/antagonistic presences

The pegasi only really seemed like a stopping point with the only real threat being sprout in his mech. Still feel like he kinda got let off the hook too easily tho, not even scolded for his actions just left to his devices once again. As for sunny being an alicorn I think that while she’s not quite one I think the horn and wings at the end are a sign she has the potential to become one and there just wasn’t enough magic at that moment to transform her completely but just temporarily give her the properties of one. But I could easily be wrong won’t know til the series itself starts

This felt more like a bookend of a G4 season.. instead of The Two Sisters being the ancient legend this time though, it's Twilight and the magic of harmony/friendship, which is honestly much better represented by the stones fitting together then they ever were with the elements.

I feel like the element gems matching with their personalities was a nice touch, because it wasn't about the three ponies. it was about friendship, and how the power of friends working together is more powerful than anything else. the gems and stones are solving different problems. the stones solving the 3 types of ponies being apart, and the gems bringing together friends and showing them what the most powerful type of magic was

The series definitely won’t be as technically polished as the movie, but I wouldn’t worry too much about cost bringing down the quality: one of the major advantages of 3d animation is that it’s super easy to reuse assets. The entry cost is much higher than 2d, but 3d is much cheaper over a long period of time, especially when the movie has created a large bank of high-quality stock assets that the animators can draw on for years to come.

They did the same thing with Jimmy neutron. Make movie assets with movie budget, reuse movie assets to create high quality renders on a TV budget.

@@josebarrera2272 Exactly, plus MLP has an extra shortcut inherent to it’s toy-selling nature: new characters can easily be made by tweaking and recolouring stock templates, and more off-model characters can still be based off of the default rigging. FiM used similar shortcuts even in flash, they’ve been very smart about being economical with assets, and I think that’s what lets them put more time and effort into actually animating.

My worry is that the grizzled ancients in charge at Hasbro won't understand the value of reusing digital assets; At present they appear to be hiring an entirely different team and maybe using a different production company: if the current production company holds the rights to all the 3D media generated and they can't buy or license them, then they would have to start over. And if they don't realize the complexity of doing that, they might just start over to avoid what they think is the more expensive route. I do hope they are going with the Jimmy Neutron strategy though... only time will tell.

Just look at the various incarnations of Transformers, and after the success of _Friendship is Magic_ I think Hasbro sees the potential for MLP to be just as big. Now, I'm waiting for the g5 series to release and have something to watch. I hope they move to 2D, for one reason: fanartists. The G4 pony design was made up of simple lines and basic shapes, practically anyone could draw one with a bit of basic talent and practice. This made the bar for entering the fanart community of MLP astronomically low, which potentially led to a greater influx of fans who could see themselves in the show via OCs. If they stick with the 3D style for G5, I'm concerned that people are going to have a much harder time overcoming the entry into fanart that looks like it could be in the show. It remains to be seen, but that's my opinion on the styling of the new ponies.

These 3D designs aren't really more complicated though. The proportions are a little different and the HD details might feel more intimidating but I don't think they're that far off from Gen 4 if you compare the two 3D movies. But since it's 3D anyway there will always be a slight disconnect, unless they model a pony in a 3D program (which is entirely possible.) So, what will matter more is the artist's skill and imagination being decent at best, if it's 2D, and that can be overcome by most people. A lot of really good fan artists have their own distinctive style anyway so mimicry isn't necessary to be impressive.

WARNING LONG LONG POST Okay, watched the show today and some things people aren't mentioning but me and my friend noticed: *The* *show* *implies* *that* *the* *mane* *6* *may* *have* *had* *descendants*. Firstly, Sunny could maybe be Twilight's descendant because of where she lives (more on that later) and because of the objects she owns such as the journal with Twilight's cutie mark and the necklace with Twilight's cutie mark. Second is Hitch who is probably Fluttershy's descendant with how animals are just "megnetically attached to him" plus his color scheme matches that of Zephyr, Fluttershy's brother. Next is Izzy. She matches Pinkie Pie's personality and even does the hopping thing that Pinkie does. I'm still not sure if Zipp and Pip are descendants of Rainbow and Rarity respectively because how did their family line intersect? Their personalities match closely though but I don't think they're related (?). Finally, Sprout. It's most evident with him and his mom with their color scheme (lit. like Big Mac), their speech (his mom calls him "sugar cube", a term of endearment Applejack used), and their HONESTY. Yes, Sprout lies ALOT because of his lazy bum, but he does show moments of honesty with his mom and the moment he realized the pegasi and unicorns might come after them. We then noticed the locations of the movie are interestingly picked. We see that the pegasi are living in Luna and Celestia's/ Twilight's castle which means they are now in Canterlot. Also, could it be that Sunny's home (the lighthouse) is what used to be Twilight's tree house? Because it housed the gems which is similar to how Twilight's tree house housed the elements and the map. Also, could the unicorns be living in Zacora's old home? Or is Izzy living in where the new tree of harmony used to be? This show is honestly good, but not great most notably with how the characters are handled (hopefully if they make a show they do these characters better). An example would definitely be Pip. She was the most disappointing one out of everyone. She had no inner conflict or struggle and she already has a job, leaving her with no dreams or ambitions and though her job is interesting (if they play around it good with struggles and stuff) it's not delved upon much in the movie. Plus, she almost had no role in the film. Also, her voice acting was the most obviously jarring. Hitch and Zipp come in close second but I think their voices were okay not great but okay. Hitch is another pony they did dirty to. They hinted alot that he liked to dance (I'd like to think if he had a cutie mark it'd be related to dancing), so why is HE not the one that danced off to Alphabittle?? I do like his character though, was a li'l boring at the beginning but they were able to redeem him as the movie went on such as showing his flaws/quirks (being cocky and confident-ish), his strictness, and his want for peace giving some type of ambition. One of the trendiest styles for animated series these days is the full-on-color lineless style similar to what's done for Disney's Tangled the Series, or even Netflix's Carmen Sandiego. They used this 2D artstyle for animation within this new MLP film at the start with Twilight and her friends. I want that for the G5 upcoming series next year. There is a HUGE difference between how the movies look and the series. I remember when I first watched it, how shocked I was at the contrast between them. So the 5th gen series that comes out definitely won't have the same level of visual mastery the movie does (The characters will look smoother rather than fuzzy, probably some lowered hair physics, Reduced lighting, etc). But I imagine the series itself will still be pretty good. I might check it out actually when it releases.

Was into FIM like 7 or so years ago, but kind of grew out of it. Came home extremely drunk one night and saw this on Netflix and decided to give it a shot, and I actually kind of enjoyed it. I loved the animation, there was enough "grown up jokes" to outweigh some of the cringe that inherently comes with it being a movie aimed at kids. My nostalgia for what was probably the least proud part of my childhood probably played a significant part in my perception of the movie aswell xd. Overall, definitly the kind of movie both kids and adults can enjoy together. I might actually give the series a go, though if it is going to be 20 minute episodes that might dumb it down a bit too much for me.

I absolutely loved this movie. I had high hopes for it from the start, and I was not disappointed!! As someone who loves animation, I thought the animation was incredible. I too am a bit skeptical about how this is going to work as an ongoing series. I think it's great as a film, but as a franchise? The grandeur of Equestria is a big part of what made it interesting to dive into, and much of that has been taken away. Technically, magic is being reclaimed, but I don't know if that's enough of a hook for very long. The world is alright, but we've seen a lot of it. I really liked this movie too! As a kid I liked G1 MLP toys mostly because they were the only toys at my cousins’ house but I never saw them as being only for girls. I saw them only as toys to play with. I remember watching a few episodes of the first two series as a kid. Then G3 came around and I liked how some of the Ponies looked but never got into their movies or toys. But then G4 came around and I loved Friendship is Magic for its writing and animation and how it showed kids ways to settle conflict without always needing to use excessive force to end it. The character development was pretty good and I liked how there were actual male characters that weren’t being used as side characters that only appear in a couple of episodes or insignificant background characters. Each Pony had their own unique charm and personality that there wasn’t one that felt like a generic character.

The title worried me but I'm just glad to see that Saber still accepts his past and is proud of being a G4 fan and even a brony. It can be difficult, especially with the stigma attached to bronies by larger society. G4 was amazing, it was a series featuring a lovable cast of characters and wondrous adventures that brought many of us together when our lives were taking a turn for the worst. I can personally say that G4 brought me back from the brink. A New Generation was a solid start for G5 and like Saber, I also have reservations about what they're going to do next. I see fans worried that the series will rely too heavily on G4 in the series while I see other fans hoping that G5 doesn't feature any more references to G4 at all. All I can say is, here's to the future. I can't wait to see where they go from here. And to Saber, good on you for not just pretending your past doesn't exist to appease your newer fanbase.

I watched it with my 5yrld daughter and it was funny and enjoyable. Not even a fan of MLP, but this was a nice surprise to watch with my kid.

The animation was absolutely gorgeous throughout. Zephyr Heights is probably the best thing I've seen like ever. Everything else was eh. The songs were a downgrade from FIM definitely. Nowhere near the same personality nor quality. Story was okay. Not good, not bad just very middle of the road. Pacing was terrible and completely unbalanced. We get out of Maretime Bay fairly fast while establishing some of the cast's personality along with the setup. Barely any time is spent in Zephyr Heights. All it is is just: Get in, get captured, meet Zipp and Pipp, Pipp sings for a bit, get the jewel and get out. Bridal was the same case. Get in, streach out the length getting disguised, pointless dance sequence, invalidate the purpose of the previous scene and get out. The final act was good at least. Some good tension and the climax is cool. My main problem is the fact the entire setup is redundant. We already had two species separating bouts and FIM which means the entire plot is a rehash. Plus it invalidates all of FIM. We spent 9 seasons making sure the events of G5 don't happen and yet it does for no reason. What was the point of the tree of harmony, the student six, the school of friendship, the whole speech about accepting eachother and the final episode? All of that just to go to waste? It would be fine if say it took place before FIM or even an AU but it's in the same continuity. What if we got a sequel to Harry Potter after the fact where Voldemort secretly hid himself as a teacher again and now he's back to his old thing? It renders the previous series as a waste of time because it ended up like nothing happened at all. Worst part is that the original concept WASN'T EVEN IN THE G4 CONTINUITY. You could have had the same story with no issues but instead because you want to bank on nostalgia it's now problematic.

Compared to some things I’ve seen recently, I thought that the pacing was pretty good, but yeah, I didn’t like how little time they spent exploring places, because they took way too long making random not very good songs (except I liked the angry mob song even though it’s kind of annoying). I also _really_ wanted, like… an explanation of the random gems? Who made them? How do they control _all magic_? Did gods make them? _Why?_ And no explanation of the big events that split them up.

I think that even with the whole get along you could still see people feeling lukewarm. Aka starlight glimmer, king sombra, tirek. Even in winter wrap up how people couldn’t use magic. I can imagine that ponies started to get tired of the magical villains attacking the land and due to twilight being a unicorn well…

Completely agree, it was visually GORGEOUS but the story was rlly lackluster and pacing felt rlly off. But I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it, it was charming and unique.

I agree with a lot here... except the complaint about everything G4 being for nothing because of history repeating itself. That is actually a very serious topic for a children show to be addressing. Hopefully they do address it well.

+: I really got emotional during the film when G4 characters were mentioned and when I saw that glass window with Twilight's cutiemark. The cities and backgrounds were beautifully detailed and all these new manestyles were just wow, wanted to just pause here and there so see better the background ponies' styles. Liked the earth pony point of view. -: songs were too fast-paced, I personally couldnt really keep up with the lyrics and all whats happening during the singing. I wasnt comfortable with some moments were the characters were just over-expressive with their facial expressions and/or movements. The lack of the cartoonish 2D expressions and vibes made it meh. IMO the music wasn't really as good as in mlp fim.

Sunny seems to represent hope, but after seeing the movie, she may secretly also represent magic. As she was able to unify all the tribes again and remind them that they’re meant to be friends, not enemies.

I like how unlike other generations where they didn't share much tangents between two or more generations (such as how besides some of the characters featured in other generations, G4 took place in a completely new world and timeline), G5 is pretty much a sequel/afterstory to G4.

Izzy is absolutely lovable and really brings the happy pace of the show. Definitely a good successor to Pinkie Pie.

Successor to Pinkie, but with a side of Rarity. Izzy's talent seems to be arts and crafts making her a more grounded and relatable character than Pinkie who was just all parties and jokes all the time. Also whereas Pinkie was obsessed with being friends with EVERYONE, Izzy seems happy to have just finally found a small group of friends. There quite a bit in the movie to suggest she's got a very lonely backstory.

I really really enjoyed this movie. It was just so fun and entertaining, I really loved the new characters, and I thought the songs were excellent. A lot of kids movies and shows have subpar music, MLP G4 was great though, and I’m glad to see that continue into G5! I hope they keep the standard up for the series, it has so much potential and I can’t wait to see how it evolves! I also loved how the characters had similarities to the G4 mane 6 but aren’t directly copies, they felt new and original. I’m also super impressed with the voice casting, I think it was on point.

With the contained plot part, I think they're saving that for the G5 seasons. The movie was to launch the new generation, so for the most part they tried to cram the lore of the show's setting in an hour long film and show us the grand endpoint goal of the generation: complete restoration of harmony (as the dude flying from a batch of balloons show, not everyone is still in agreement). I love where G5 is going. I wasn't convinced at first, but now they got my full attention as they did back in 2012.

Ok, I finally did see it and it wasn't too bad. Well, wasn't bad at all actually. I'm rather stoked to see where it goes, and to see if/how they explain things that happen. The animation style is still a touch off-putting, but one can get used to it.
