I remember them by the numbers for example “7 ate nine” so seven must not have any friends, so he “talks to no one”. 10 is usually the highest number in 1-10 scales so it must be a number related to being higher or prideful, so you would “Salute” him in respect. 11, the 11th hour is the darkest hour. So be especially watchful at night.

Chief, a bit of a correction. Standards as stated in the 10th General order does not refer to swords or cutlasses. Standard refers to a US flag as carried by cavalryman on a horse. These General orders are old. We still had cavalry into the 1930s. My Father learned them in the Marine Corps in 1921 and my uncle in 1916. The exact same orders. In fact my Father rode a horse as Sgt. of the Guard at Great Lakes in the early 1930s. We still see standards today, Mostly in Parades, by the Army but they still exist. Other than that Great Memorization tool. Thanks Former CPO/LDO.

"One of the most difficult things to memorize..." Bro, it took me only 3 days to memorize them all by heart before shipping off. Graduated RTC almost 3 months ago, still remember all eleven of them. 1. To take charge of my post and all government property in view 2. To walk my post in a military manner; keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing. 3. To report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce 4. To repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse than my own 5. To quit my post only when properly relieved 6. To receive, obey, and pass onto the sentry who relieves me all orders from the commanding officer, commanding duty officer, officer of the deck, and officers and petty officers of the watch only 7. To talk to no one except in the line of duty 8. To give the alarm in case of fire or disorder 9. To call the officer of the deck in any case not covered by instructions 10. To salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased. 11. To be especially watchful at night, and, during the time of challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post; and to allow no one to pass without proper authority

I was USAF, went to Basic Training and went the entire time without memorizing the General Orders. I guess I just missed that part of the instructions when I first arrived at Basic Training, as I could not understand what my TI was yelling. The last day, we finished our graduation parade, and someone asked the TI, "Do we have to remember our General Orders after we graduate?". At that point, I suddenly realized, "we were supposed to memorize those??!!". I kept my mouth shut, went back to the barracks and packed my gear and left of Tech School. I was one lucky Dude, I don't recommend trying that, especially since you now know better.

You left off the most important one, the twelfth General order. I may have been the one who started this in Army basic training some 60 years ago at Fort Ord. In-ranks inspection. What I later learned was that a dumbass ROTC second lieutenant was doing the inspection. Even a basic trainee could tell he was at least inexperienced. He got to me, "Soldier, what's the twelfth General order?" In a "sound off like you got a pair" voice, I answered, "Sir, the twelfth general order is to make damn f###lng sure you know the first eleven, sir." By the way, I later learned a dumbass ROTC second lieutenant is someone who did ROTC, did not do basic training, could do officer stuff, but couldn't soldier worth a s###.
