Mike Mignola, Hellboy's author disagreed with Del Toro, so it all went down the toilet. Del Toro's Hellboy 3 has a leuchemia boy in it. For the released Hellboy 3 we can see how this was not the cup of tea of Mignola. He have showed some unhappiness before: "Both versions can work," Mignola said, "but a lot of 'Hellboy II' is del Toro taking ownership of these characters and having them do things I would never have them do." "I wanted something small and spooky," Mignola said, while Del Todo is "a filmmaker who has a catalogue of things he wants to do." www.mtv.com/news/2592742/mike-mignola-on-singing-hellboy-and-guillermo-del-toros-story-decisions/ It's clear he was more interested in trying to stick with the feel of the original character more than make money: But I’m very lucky to have producers that want me involved, and especially since with this one they wanted to go closer to the source material, well, it’d be pretty stupid of me, as the one guy who does fully understand the source material, to say, “Good luck, I want nothing to do with it.” So I was very happy that I got a chance to go in. www.vulture.com/2019/04/mike-mignola-hellboy-neil-marshall.html

The Del Toro movies didn´t made a gazillion dollars at the B.O. *but* the fans love them, they were critically acclaimed and they made good money on dvd/blue-ray,because they have a cult following. Guillermo Del Toro got an Oscar last year,he and Ron Pearlman wanted to do a 3rd movie to finish the trilogy, plus the fans were begging for it. Give the guy a moderate budget, it doesn´t have to be Avengers level money and just let him do it ffs! Instead, they decided to reboot the whole thing,re-cast the main character, adapt a storyline from the end of the comics instead of one of the first story-arcs(that´s like making a Lord of the Rings movie and adapt the 3rd book, instead of Fellowship of the Ring!) and to top this shitshow, they cast Milla Jovovic as the main villain!! But hey,it´s Rated-R and edgy, that counts for something, right? *WHAT IN THE NAME OF NEIL BREEN´S LAPTOP WERE THEY THINKING?!*

This is one of my family’s classics. We watch it at least three times throughout the year, and we’ve watched it quite a bit in the last few months since it’s been on SciFy. Me and my mom went to see it, just to see how it was, but we were very disappointed with it. You’re right about the characters. Our favorite, Abe, wasn’t there, only teased with an obviously shittier design, the pyro wasn’t there, who had a great character arc, and I hated what they did with Father. It’s like they found the same base ingredients and thew them in, but had no idea what made the film so loveable.

Those were my exact thoughts about the CGI, like the Hell Monsters at the end looked great, some of the gore was well detailed but MAN OH MAN that fight with the 3 giants was aaaaawwwful. I felt like I was watching the SyFy Channel back in 2001 again and even the Asian guy looked terrible when he turned into that Cheetah/Jaguar. I honestly didnt think those two would be his sidekicks either until they made it a point at the end, Guillermo del Torro honestly wrote Hellboy so much better, he wondered about what his existence meant, was he born to be good or bad and thats it? Does this mean he's actually evil and only pretending to be good? Would he one day snap and hurt those he loved the most? Does his presence alone mean he will bring about the end of the world? He would mull over dark thoughts like that and the enemies he faced were clever enough to point it out and use it against him for some really emotional but badass fights. This version just felt very... bloody and bland.

@@redwolfjo3_647 I'll rewatch it on Friday with my friends but as far as I remember no, not really. I think it was an alright movie but the comics had a bigger focus on hellboy and his story, the BPRD and how they treat "non humans", the relationships were not very exact in the slightest but it has a reason. It's a movie. Movies are for a bigger audience. They had to bring more focus on the side characters to make it balanced. They have to abbreviate so much, all the reveals about hellboy in the comic felt like adding a new piece to the puzzle and in the movie its like "here you go". The comic books had so many more characters and creatures and every fight was pretty memorable, at least to me and I remember shit from the movie besides Nazis. I remember the beginning of the second movie with the market and it didn't match the theme or the atmosphere of the comic. I think the biggest issue was really the atmosphere. I will update you on Friday or Saturday once I have rewatched the movies Esit: also like hellboy is not like an edgy, empty headed guy. He is the best one at the BPRD and they made him in the movie more like a hulk and I really didn't like that. He is sarcastic to his enemies, has pretty lame one lines for his enemies when he wants to show he's bored by them aka to provoke them, he is not emotional, he makes good decisions and his temper is actually not THAT short as it was made out it the beginning of the comic or in the movies

I totally agree with you. I really liked The Descent. Hellboy wasn't horrible, but wasn't great. Most of the CGI was awful, but the practical effects and make up were really good. The tonal shifts were so abrupt it was comical at times. The scene where they were riding to the giant fight, all I could think of was Monty Python and The Holey Grail. And while the character that Daniel Dae Kim played is Asian in the comics, it didn't seem that his race was important to his character and all I could think of was how good Ed Skein would have been, especially since Kim couldn't keep up the English accent! Pity as he's a really good actor. And the Baba Yaga scene should have just been scary!!!

I expected this movie to suck after the review but i liked it, adam is right about the character development and that theres not much of a story but the stranger things guy did a good job, the gore was great and the demons at the end were pretty awesome. i honestly enjoyed it

I felt this film works spiritually as a prequel of sorts. I realized this because Hellboy is a lot more of a son-father movie than a love story like the originals. He seems a lot more immature (which I found endearing and cute tbh) and also has a lot more hair. The other movies, his hairline recedes way back and he seems far more mature. They shuffled a lot of events around of course but still, I think it helps to read it like that although people naturally won't because no matter what he's a little boy in a BIG BUFF RED MAN body lmao

It's a very nice good looking movie. The CGI is really good and just blends with the live action. I think I was going into this with a mindset that it would be funny as hell. It does provide some good laughs. Of course, the original Hellboy is the best adaptation. C+.

Agreed, overall. A resoundingly "OK" film -- the shadow of GdT's movies definitely hangs heavy over this one. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say the more fantastical, colorful aesthetic of those movies works better for the character than the grimy, hard-R feel of this one, but then I've never read any of the comics so I could be totally off.

thanks for mentioning the tail, that in particular was something i noticed and thought was real silly. poopoo on this movie (which may or may not get a sequel) for sequel-bating abe sapein lol. i kinda wished they would've focused on just hellboy and the girl alice. that scene where he puts some randos military helmet on her and says shes his bodyguard was cute and charming. they could've developed a sweet friendship during the runtime.

I find it funny that what they did is basically pushed The Wild Hunt story arc and his origin story into one film. No wonder it's confusing.

Minor rant: It’s basically the fucking story of the golden crown but like... made out of 6 bullet points and instead of filling the gaps they just fucking went: •backstory of villain •hellboy in public (not good) •antagonist wants piece of item •someone tells hellboy people are judgemental •hellboy becomes demon •hellboy changes mind because everyone is also judgemental Like it did have that whole spirit of vengeance vibes, but god they shifted Hellboys motivation more than a toddler deciding on if they want to eat. Shit they even had the journey to heal a companion and it was like done in 5 seconds with no weight and then went back to the main story as if they just caught her starting up the apocalypse

Giullermo DelToro had the third film planned out. Ron Perlman loves acting hellboy. Mike Mingola was a fan of the adaptation of his characters. Fans loved the adaptation of their favorite stories. There was absolutely no reason for this film to be made instead of a third film to finish off the original series and it hurts me inside, as a fan of Hellboy, to think of what we could have had.

The director wasn't aloud to portray his vision of it because the producers were always butting in. Apparently it was the producers telling the actors what to do instead of the director. And David Harbour walked off set at one point, refusing to do more takes. So yeah that's probably why

Yes the producers would film unscripted scenes when the director was away and not let the director do his job.
