at 17:28 in the sentence Oblaci su se nadvili nad grad. What is the su se for because I got not clue and would you ever add an ending to the noun grad
@thornedev1507 Жыл бұрын
i know this is 4 months old, but here you go: su is part of the past "su nadvili/nadvili su". it is one of those words that must be in the second position in a sentence. it means "they are" but you can understand it as an "=". so it doesn't mess with your understand of tense. So "Clouds = covered" se is a reflexive pronoun, it means "self" and depends on the subject. If I am the subject then it means "myself". Here the subject is clouds, so it means themselves. It tells us that an action is reflected back at a subject, and we use it to make transitive verbs intransitive - this means turning a sentence from "The glass broke something" to "The glass broke (on its own, itself)". So in this case, the clouds didn't directly cover something above the city, but they became covering/covered or congregated. Se technically also needs to be in 2nd position, but there is a subtle ranking system and here su wins. Se su is wrong. You can change the noun sometimes, I would personally say "nad gradom", making it instrumental but retaining the same meaning. I would trust this video to teach you standard cro tho, don't take it from me who speaks dialect LOL I hope this makes sense. It is a bit tricky to explain with a yt comment but it gets way easier with practice and reading :) Wish you all the best and thank you for learning my language!

Poštovana gospođo Ines, Can you please check these questions I made and tell me which option for each is correct (or if neither are ☹️)?? MASCULINE (animate) - SINGULAR: Do you see the tall good looking man? a) Vidiš li visokog lijepog čovjeka? or b) Vidiš li visok lijep čovjek? Do you hate the bad stranger? a) Mržiš li lošeg stranca? or b) Mržiš li loš stranac? MASCULINE (animate) - PLURAL: Do you see the tall good looking men? a) Vidiš li visoke lijepe muškarce? or b) Vidiš li visoki lijepi muškarci? Do you hate the bad strangers? a) Mržiš li loše strance? or b) Mržiš li loši stranci? FEMININE (animate and inanimate) - SINGULAR: Do you have a girlfriend? a) Imaš li curu? or b) Imaš li cura? Do you see the tall good looking girl? a) Vidiš li visoku lijepu curu? or b) Vidiš li visoka lijepa cura? Are you eating bitter food? a) Jediš li gorku hranu? or b) Jediš li gorka hrana? After learning both the Nomativ and Accusative cases I would think option a) for all of them are correct. However, one native speaker told me I should go for option b), whereas another told me option a) is correct. Also, one random question, is the plural for the word “laž” (lie) in Nomativ same as it’s singular form or is it, “laževi” or something else? S postovani Zvonimir
@learncroatian91353 жыл бұрын
Zdravo, Zvonimire! Odlična pitanja! So, you are totally correct! All of the options a) are correct and you should never use the option b) in these instances. All of your examples are examples of the direct objects so you have to use the Accusative. Great job!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Also, the plural of the word laž is laži. :) Samo tako nastavi! Bravo!

@@learncroatian9135 Zdravo Ines, I have another question related to the accusative case. I was reading a sports news article about a professional soccer/football player called Subasic, signing for Hajduk Split just a couple days ago. Subasic's home town is Zadar and he also previously played for Hajduk in 2008. The following sentence is in the article: "Subašić je u Hajduk stigao iz svog matičnog Zadra 2008." Google Translate translates that as: "Subašić arrived in Hajduk from his hometown of Zadar in 2008." Does that mean the word "iz" (i.e. "from") is another preposition for the accusative case? Furthermore, if it is a preposition for the accusative case, does "iz" follow the same rules as "među, nad i pod" when used as an accusative - only when an action has already finished? With every other time it is used it is used as an instrumental case? Hvala puno :)
@learncroatian91353 жыл бұрын
@@zvonimirhr_herceg2562 Hi, Zvonimir! I love your questions! So, in the sentence you stated, "iz svog matičnog Zadra" is actually Genitive. Iz usually is followed with the Genitive case. Svog matičnog Zadra is all Genitive. If it was Accusative, it would be "svoj matični Zadar". The Genitive case is tricky since it's basically the preposition case - it uses most of prepositions. The trick is knowing when the preposition asks for another case, such as Accustaive or Instrumental. In this case, iz requires Genitive.

Hello! You said we should use the accusative with verbs of movement, so in that case why is it "Ana ide kući" and not "Ana ide kuću"? Thanks !!!
@learncroatian91353 жыл бұрын
Ana ide kući expresses movement toward something and it comes without a prepositions so Dative is used. If you said Ana ide u kuću, then you could use the Accusative. Idem + somewhere is an expression which is used as "idem + Dative"
@perryzutshi52323 жыл бұрын
@@learncroatian9135 Ah, ok. So is there a shade of difference in meaning between "Ana ide kući" and ana ide u kuću". Or is it just verb of movement + dative and verb of movement + preposition + accusative.?

@@robert6169 There are two verions of this name. Ivan is a guy's name, Ivana is a girl's name. "Ivana" is Accusative for the name Ivan, and "Ivanu" is Accusative for the name Ivana (a female version). In this sentence you need to use the Accusative.
