The past the present and the future are all progressive and linear moments seen all at once by the mind. Yes - the past is progressive, you only see it the way you have defined it, and that what controls the future. the present is the window of change, and it only passes quickly if you feel out of control. The present can be as long as you want it to be. Tennessee Williams is ascribing humanity from the prospect of linear perceptions, but time is spherical, and cycles, it doesn't go forward or backwards, it expands.

You nailed that one, amigo. Bravo. Such music takes us to our 'Moments' ... the great ones, the not so good ones -- -- and of course, to the 'Moments' that will forever haunt us ... be they of heartache, un-fixable regrets or a love lost. His is music you listen to when you're in need of a good think. But then, one can always find a bright horizon of redemption in a boiling sky of conflict with Thomas Newman's wondrous music. D.A. ps: Colin Watt -- there's a book by the late, great William Goldman called, 'THE COLOR OF LIGHT' and I think you might dig it. I was listening to this exact track several times for about half a year by now and never wanted to comment it (cause music perception is something very intimate and personal). But i can’t keep it anymore- this music just tears out the heart and soul out of the body, even though i’m a millenial, who grew up with Sam Mendes’ movies not saying about all the music of 80-90s and nothing can touch and surprise me anymore. But when i listen to this masterpiece, i unintentionally burst into tears EACH and every time and i can’t control it…Thomas Newman will never read this comment, but if he only knew, how deeply he touched the soul strings. One must be a genius to create a masterpiece like this. Either I look into the sky watching the clouds passing by, or i watch the trees or stars, i retrospect my whole life, philosophizing about the sense of everything…This music is just perfect.

This movie is about a father doing whatever he can to save his son and he pays the ultimate price in the end. I think any father could relate to that as I think any father (or at least most) would die for their sons and daughters. I know I would. As someone who never really had a positive father figure growing up I will do anything to make sure my son does, this movie is criminally underrated as it shares a message we can all relate to. You spoke from my heart, I can relate to all your words! I also had a very flawed father figure. I know he struggled a lot, with poverty, bad marriage, with depression, addictions like alcoholism and the feeling of an unfulfilled and failed life. I know he loved and still loves me and my siblings. But so much damage had been done, my family is so broken, it is beyond repair. So many grudges, so much violence, physical and emotional. Battles and fights, hatred and guilt without the hope for redemption. I can't express how sad I am because of this, but what can I do? I want my toddler son to have a family and a father he can be proud of. I am far from perfect, full of scars, and with a lot of flaws. But I'd do anything to ensure my son a happy childhood, what we never had.

Just finished watching this for the first time. What a phenomenal movie, I was introduced to Sam Mendes through 1917 and it quickly became one of my favorite historical pieces. Road to Perdition I think is up there on my top historical period dramas. I like a lot of movies, I like a lot of Tom Hanks movies, but this one is different. There was this sort of emotional bond I shared with the Sullivan's struggles in this movie. For the elder in his quest for revenger and the younger for struggling to come to terms with his father and their relationship. The movie had the perfect level of tension and drama and I felt visually arrested in some scenes just like how I was in 1917. Sam Mendes is one of our brightest stars in the director world. Thomas Newman deserves as much credit for creating the atmosphere for this wonderful picture.

Consider the greatness of the Newman musical family. Thomas' dad, Alfred, was the head of the 20th Century-Fox music department for two decades. When he ran Fox's music, Alfred watched over the careers of two young composers named John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Thomas' brother, David, is also a first class composer. Thomas' uncle, Lionel, ran the Fox music department after Alfred left to go free lance. Thomas' cousin, Randy is the hero of all short people. This is just a stunning piece of music, worthy of being played in any concert hall.

This music just absolutely destroys me emotionally because I’m a father that’s less than perfect and I would do anything just like in the movie to keep my child safe. This music is absolutely incredible and it brought emotions out of me that I thought had died

Thomas Newman is one of my favorite soundtrack artists and Soundtrack to Road to Perdition is my all time favorite, as is the movie. Should have won Oscars across the board, especially for score. Beautiful.

This track and "Twenty Dollars Worth" from the soundtrack Michael Clayton (by James Newton Howard) are so mesmerizing, chilling, and transcendental. Sure path to self-reflection each time. A mix of coping, "feeling lost", regret, solitude, and asking "how do we go from here onwards" imposes itself on my register of emotions.
