First ice fishing trip of the season wasn't successful but we finally caught our target species, a Northern Pike, on the second round for a tasty dinner back at the cabin.

You guys never fail to impress. I liked at the beginning Arielle was pulling the sled while Eric was walking behind. (Yes I realize that he was setting up the camera.) Last winter in Minnesota I saw the woman who has the cabin next door on the island dragging a very heavy sled from where we park out to the island. This woman is 80 years old and probably doesn't weigh much over 100 pounds but that didn't stop her. I did go over and help her carry her stuff up to her cabin and she was grateful. She was also pleased with the photo I took of her pulling the sled. She is a writer and comes up to the lake in the winter to focus on her writing.

I was on pins and needles waiting for a fish! I'm declaring that Simple Living Alaska has opened ice fishing season!! I love it when you go out and get something and then go home and process and then...drum roll...get in the kitchen. Buttery garlic Pike...I swear I could taste it. There's a reason why so many of us love your channel. When Arielle laughed with such glee when that Pike came out of the water...priceless. You are the best example of rocking Alaska! As I typed this I saw your views rocket from 47K to to over 51K...and still climbing. I just love how you've so completely adapted to Alaska and not only made it your home, but fully embraced the life. ❤❤❤ Suzi

Ah we are envious of that snowfall. We are patiently waiting for winter to slowly creep in. Great to see the pups along for the outing. And the unmistakable hum of the Coleman lantern, such a unique soft light it casts. Many a card game has been had in the shadows of the Coleman. Totally my highlight of this video pun intended. My hand got cold just watching Eric set those tip ups. 🥶 Till the next one, tight lines 🎣

I fish northern pike a lot here in North Dakota, the best place for bait is 6 to 8 inches off of the bottom. Summer I let bait sit right on the bottom with great success. They are a scavenger fish also is why they are near the bottom.

I binged your construction videos over the past few weeks and found your lifestyle to be what many of us only dream of. I always wanted to go to Alaska when I was younger, but could never afford it. I ended up in the Mountains of Colorado, very similar weather to yours. Wanted to comment on your preparation of the Northern. Fileting is correct for this fish, but you will have a much better eating experience if you use a seasoned fish flour and cook in hot oil. putting a crispy texture on it and cooking out all of the bones. To prepare the fish for cooking this way, you should "score" your fish to allow the oil to get into the meat and cook the bones out. Similar to walleye, but you don't have to score walleye. Scoring is done on a fish board with ribs, putting the skin side down on the board and slicing the meat 3/4's the way through every 1/4 inch or so. This allows the hot oil to get into the meat and cook the bones out. I use a medium seasoned fish flour, also seasoning the fish prior to cooking, and peppering the fish while cooking. Cook until the bubbles stop or reduce to nil. This is when all the water is out of the fish and it is done.

love your video's I've watched them all!!! Tip. Try fishing about a foot off bottom. The pike will run threw the weeds on the bottom and shoot out to ambush there pray. Also if using plastics set the hook when you feel them. plastics dont taste good unless scented and they will spit them out. But with real meat (fish or hotdogs) give them a few to eat. hope this helps. Happy fishing and good luck.

As I start the video and look out at the blanket of white all around you, I see the daylight time vs nighttime and the low temps vs the high. We’re about to get our first snow of the year in Oklahoma. It will be a very light dusting, but our ground temps are still too high for anything to stick. I’ve also been vocal about the falling temps, too. But, your videos are a great reminder of things I can be grateful for, here in the now. Like, mostly no snow and above freezing temps. I still love Alaska. Like Dolly (then Whitney) said: I will always love you…guys. 😂❤

If you have not tried it, you need to try pickling those northern pike. I noticed the Y bones when you were eating it. We pickle the small ones like you caught because the Y bones are dissolved in the process. They keep for a year when done this way. Don’t get too fancy. Not a pile of herbs and such. Just vinegar, salt, and tiny amount of sugar. Just simplly fillet and cut out the rib and back. Leave the Y bones in and pack em in the jar. Pour over the boiling brine and seal it up. Leave them for a few weeks and enjoy. Better than herring any day.

Brrrrrr..I gave up 4 seasons in Washington for the year round warmth of a Caribbean Costa Rica in 2010. Each passing year reminds me more and more how much I miss the seasonal change. I really enjoy watching you relish the ebb and flow of nature's beauty as it responds to seasonal changes. Day time temperatures in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica vary from 65F to 95F and humidity from 50% to 100%. Sunrise to sunset varies + or - 20 minutes through out the year. Thus seasonal changes create more subtle natural effects. No more September hills blanketed with yellow alder leaves giving way to bare branches and winter's brown carpet. No more fall excursions from Seattle over Mt Rainier to the Naches valley where I scored lugs of tree ripened peaches. No more orange, red and purple vine maple leaves creating collages amidst a palette of dark green conifer needles with bright azure skies creating sapphire alpine lakes hiding between granite escarpments. Costa Rica offers a different natural palette. I have come to recognize many more shades of green and blue. Tropical rain forests offer infinite shades of green with varying leafy textures. The ocean reflecting many hues of blue from its sandy and coral depths. The forest marks its seasons with different species of flowers and tree blossoms as opposed too leaves falling. It is still nature showing her infinite beauty. Looking forward to our next ice fishing trip. 😊
