@@MrTeaust Charlemagne's name was not Charlemagne. It was Charles. I doubt anyone would have called him Charlemagne to his face while he was alive. "Charlemagne" means "Charles the Great" translated into modern English. It's perhaps a bit clearer when you see his name in Germany: Karl der Große. Anyway it's not a name. His name is part of it, but it's a title. You use it to talk *about* him, but you wouldn't say to him, "Hey, Charlemagne, wanna grab a beer?" You'd just call him Charles. Or Karl, if you're German.

Made the mistake of marrying a genius/ambitious woman before on my Sussex playthrough. I had consolidated the duchies of Kent and Essex, as well as grabbed most of Wessex and all of Cornwall. I was in position to bring down Mercia and get situated to create the kingdom of England title. She did bear me a genius son, and a spare. I was happy, even thrilled. Then she murdered my only brother, whom I had given a barony. No big deal, I thought. Then she murdered me when my son was 11 years old while I was winning against the King of Mercia. Throwing me into a regency, I lost the war when my Saxony ally peaced out. She then botched up my genius son, weakened me to the point that Northumbria smelled blood in the water and evidently sowed discontent with my vassals until a rebellion arose. By the time I regained control and fought off Northumbria, I was broke and betrothed to an awful woman. Worse yet, Mercia had regrouped. It took me around 50 years longer than it should have to unite Britain. You could say that it was due to the Ambitious trait, but stupid ambitious is manageable while genius makes them too good at intrigue.

Quill, the army splitting in CK2 is based on the liege levies and vassal levies raised from individual holdings. It'll split armies as evenly as it can, but it won't ever break up a holding's individual levy, which is why you get uneven splits all the time.

Kill your barons and take their castles. Personal levy is best levy. Also, congrats on causing a revolt to keep your land. I'm sure your joining of a faction beforehand was "just as planned" rather than complete fluke? :P Side note - it was nice of him to make you chancellor and all, but given that you (inadvertently) got your previous King out of prison and back on the throne, you'd think he'd have a slightly better opinion of you, it was about -50 or something, the ungrateful arse.

Would say that if you are going to spend gold on your holdings to upgrade them (and you should), castle town is easily one of the first if not THE first to get. The earlier the better and the more it can help you improve down the road. If you are small in this game, make every improvement you can to survive against just about anything, and go for the long term; investing in making more gold in as long a term as possible works well (er... at least better).

I will say, one of the things I really dont like about this game is how war works. You go to war with a country, beat them up completely but you can only take the one tiny county you had a claim to. Because that is how war works. You push an entire nation into submission and then only take one town.

The revolt was someone within your country; your leader [got imprisoned?] and the revolt ended; then, Karl took over your country and unified France (it's coded into the game for Karloman to die and give the country to Karl, as that's what happened during the rise of Charlemagne (Karl is Charlemagne.).).

As a general rule for picking a child's focus/tutor - boys get diplomacy or stewardship as they may eventually inherit while girls get intrigue or theology. If you marry them to someone with titles/claims, there is always the chance that they'll intrigue the holdings into the family and if they end up as your heir, the theo will help offset the bishop relationship neg. mod.
