I am a white skinned 50ish yr old Wiradjuri man. My father grew up on an Aboriginal mission in the 40's/50's as a half cast. A lot lighter akinned than the rest of our relations. He told me a lot about his life growing up and told me 'its harder for a white man in a black mans world than it is for a black man in a white mans world'. It didn't really mean that much to me until the last few years. I have seen how the discrimination towards straight white men has become something i would never have imagined. I was a lot like you when i was younger. Supported social issues, social security, Palestine, and open borders. It wasn't until I did my own research that I'd realised how misled I was. We aren't all equal as much as we can't choose our gender or species. At this point in my life, I've come to realise we need to listen to Dr ML King and judge a person on their character, not by b the colour of their skin. Australia Day is for all Australians. If you don't feel it's worth celebrating, it's a reflection on your character, and maybe you should find an alternate country to live in.

@@resiefan3258 Ya ya, thats why Australia has a better standard of living, better wages, better healthcare, less crime and longer life expectancy. 1st Amendment: The right to freedom of speech is protected by articles 19 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). 2nd Amendment: We could not care less about owning guns, as we have far lower rates of crime. You can legally own a firearm in Australia anyways, just requires more work to get one. 3rd Amendment: Quartering of soldiers is hardly a right or liberty that is important anymore. 4th Amendment: Australia's Privacy Act 1988 protects citizens' privacy rights. 5th Amendment: While you are correct that there is no constitutional protection for the right to silence in Australia, a common law principle, known as the companion rule, provides individuals (but not corporations) this protection. So stop trying to denigrate something you know nothing about, Australia ranks higher than America in almost every metric except military strength, and constantly tops "most liveable country" rankings. American citizens are some of the most poorly treated of first world countries, where they have the worst healthcare of developed nations, no paid sick or maternity leave, relatively high crime rates and one of the lowest minimum wages of the developed nations. Funniest part to me is, all the BS they sprout is actually solved by having Australia Day on the 26th. It isn't the day the First Fleet landed (that was January 18th) and it wasn't "claimed" on the 26th either, that was done a full 18 years prior in April of 1770 when Captain Cook first sailed and mapped the east coast of Australia. So even though a flag was raised in another location at a second settlement area on the 26th.. it wasn't even the first flag to be planted in Australia; Cook did it nearly 2 decades before that.

I think the Voice referendum has also contributed to the majority of people rethinking the anti-Australia Day agenda. They saw the arguments for the Voice lacking substance and the proponents of the Voice deflecting important questions by bullying critics with accusations of racism at every turn. This closely echoes the tactics used in pushing for an end to Australia Day. When it was clear that the vast majority of Australians were in silent opposition to the Voice it reassured people that they are far from the only ones to oppose this agenda. I am hopeful that we've now seen the worst of the anti-Australia Day movement and are finally moving towards embracing Australia Day as an opportunity to appreciate and take pride in the fantastic country that Australia has become.

I was born and raised in Australia to parents who migrated from New Zealand in the 1980s. Growing up, I never saw this day as a symbol of genocide or historical atrocities. It was a time of commemoration and celebration, but social media activists have changed that narrative. Their influence has pressured many into silence, discouraging any expression of national pride-even to the point of redefining Australian identity as “European”. I refuse to be intimidated by the woke movement and will continue to stand proudly as an Australian. Happy Australia Day 🇦🇺

Go Zoe, I’m in my mid seventies and remember a time when ANZAC day was on the nose in 70’s and 80’s. The majority of Australians are in favour of Australia Day on January 26th. So even if you don’t like the date let’s celebrate all the good things about modern Australia.

This jingoistic nonsense only started 20 years ago, so called Australia day hardly existed on many different dates before then
@brunskiyoski4 күн бұрын
@petergilbert3861 it's usually for a good reason. You clearly didn't understand why in the 70s, 80s people objected to anything relating to war given the experience of crazy Yankees and the insane carpet bombing, Agent Orange, and more bombs dropped than the entire Second World War. If you go to Vietnam, you can still see the horrific legacy left by the insane Yankees. A lot of younger people were totally sick of any representation of war. Quite simple, really, same as this current issue.
@BenMedor4 күн бұрын
@@brunskiyoski How old are you? Even if one hates war and think the whole Vietnam thing was bullshit (which it was) why would verbally abusing and spitting on young Australian men that were sent there make it better? Were you even alive when that stuff happened???
@brunskiyoski4 күн бұрын
@BenMedor well, I certainly didn't agree with the overreaction by some of the young people, I thought it came from a place of ignorance, that they should be more respectful and perhaps protest in a different more subtle way. People were overdosed at the time with the representation of War. I believe that Australia should not have participated, aided and abetted the vile Yankees in that villainous war. I can't stand how Australia always plays the little Lackey to the Yankee Overlord.

@@brunskiyoski Well, as the Americans like to say, : "we saved your ass in WW2". And Messrs. Menzies and Holt said yes. That's why I'm so interested in that time. Great endorsement of your stance that Australia Day is for all of us, WARTS AND ALL! If we are incapable simultaneously of REFLECTION and of PRIDE, then allocate each sentiment to different days. Personally, I feel that the time for supporting victimisation no longer has the assumed HIGHER MORALITY, and is showing signs of being counterproductive to social cohesion. Life requires us to understand our pain but to transcend it, that's if we are going to contribute to society.

I'll tell you a reason, the date is far more related to Britains history than our own. Paired with the fact that it understandably upsets a few groups of people, I find it rather cringe that some people can't even understand why there's a debate to change the debate. Make no mistake I am proud of my country and do not succumb to the delusions of white guilt. But I will say that Australia acted more independtly in the last 100 years than it ever has in the last decade and the fact that our 'day' of celebrating our proud country is tied to what? The British? I understand that the 26th is all we have at the moment but I honestly think we can do better. If it wasn't for the myth that we've collectively believed that the 26th of January has any cultural significance for celebrating our country, then it would be nothing but a date in history books concerning where British prisoners went cause they had lost America. All I am saying, is that I think its fundamentally important for our society to have a nationalist identity to be proud of and to enjoy that sense of mateship with one another. But not one with the British, and not one that may harm the Indigenous peoples whom we should've gotten along better with which I think is our countrys biggest flaw.

Just. WOW!!!❤❤❤ Thank u SO much. From the bottom of heart ❤ I'm a veteran. Our flag means EVERYTHING to us, because EVERY Australian is under it. Its NOT the Union Jack or YT roots. Most of us got tattoos of Ned Kelly and the Southern Cross. It was the harsh reality of REAL war and acceptance of Brothers/Sisters in Arms in service to OUR people... under a flag. That flag. Most of us are happy to change the flag or step away from the Monachy... but it MUST service ALL Australians in humility, for humanity. The UNs Human Rights declaration better defines the Abrahamic 10 commandments in today's societies. Only individuals playing for gain benefit from all this division... and it's a FILTHY rabbit hole of history. True. But it's one planet. EVERY flag is usually the result on a BLOODY struggle or war. Celebrating our humanity with humility is important. ❤❤❤

When I was young, I was anti establishment and definitely not patriotic. It’s healthy to question why things are the way they are but my concept was not based on data, just a feeling. As I matured and became interested in how the world operates I became appreciative of what our country delivered in prosperity and freedom and regardless of the travesties of the past, colonialism has produced a reasonable standard of living . The average Australians (majority) that don’t concur with the guilt that the Woke movement wishes to bestow upon us, will preserve Australia Day because it is fundamentally a good thing

I remember Australia day 1988 was a great time, a celebration of a nation. What a great time to be growing up. I've since spent a lot of time in the north west of Australia and it saddens me to see the destruction that alcohol, drugs and a poor diet has done to our original countrymen. We need to help them, not give them handouts. When you see the energy and excitement of children and their willingness to learn, the potential these kids possess, this is what we should be celebrating. The potential for a better country.

Our silly founding Father's declared Australia an independent country on 01/01/01... see what they did there?! So because we can't have Australia Day on this day, because it's already a public holiday, and everyone is hung over from New Year's, so they chose the date NSW was declared a colony. Which is ironic, but it's probably the best compromise date that they can come up with.
