Great job on an encouraging video for newbies! I am a longarm quilter and I really try hard to educate my piecers on batting. I'm glad you enjoy 100% cotton batt. It does give a scrunchie look when washed with cotton fabric. I don't want anyone to be afraid to try other types as each one has a purpose. I find polys, wools, bamboo, and silks to wash beautifully with cotton fabric. Wool gives outstanding texture with custom quilting as does double batting. It's just all about a different look and end product! happy quilting!

Your videos are fantastic and so helpful to a newbie quilter! I have a question about the mat you use to cut fabric. What brand/kind do you use? I have an Omnigrid mat and I am having trouble with the fabric not cutting all the way through. I am using an Olfa rotary trimmer.

Thanks Erica. I am working on a quilt pattern with lots of snowballed corners. Sadly my squares are not meeting the 4.5” and 8.5” finished squares so I’m loosing my points to the hearts I was creating. Is there a better way to see 1.5” squares to a 2.14” square! I’m sewing slowly, but I still get wiggly seams. .

I'm trying to find the courage to start......I've watched your journey since the beginning, and love every quilt you do. I also love that you've got your girls on board. My granddaughter is 9 and my youngest is 8 ~ I going to start teaching them to sew soon. I learned so much great info from you in this video! Question about the Aurafil ~ I've never used it, but purchased another thread at joanns that was on a similar type spool and it was extremely curly and quite difficult to maneuver. Is the Aurafil like that? Did I load it on the top of the machine wrong? Thx **~Karen

No, and I don't usually have any troubles with it being all curly, or breakage while sewing with Aurifil either. I'm assuming if you just placed the spool on top of your machine as indicated in your manual then it should be fine. So if it's tangling or breaking easily while sewing I would probably try a better quality thread.

Hi Erica! I have a question for you! I know at one time you used or had the Brother Cs6000i sewing machine. I have that one and prior to watching this video I was using inferior thread, not realizing it really made a difference. I now want to switch to the Aurifil cotton but I'm kind of confused! Can you use those skinny spools with this machine, and if you can, does it matter which way the thread comes off the spool? Should it be from the back or the front? Because I have seen tutorials that are showing both ways and now I don't know which is correct. I have always had my thread coming from the back of the spool as per the instruction manual. But I did see a forum where someone said the Aurifil was different. Any suggestions??? Thanks so much, I love this series!!!

Hi, yes you can use a spool on the Brother, they all have the same size hole down the center. So you would just set it up on the spool peg. I don't think it matters which way it comes off, I think mine is usually from the back, but I don't know that I've done that on purpose or if it just happens to go that way lol. Aurifil is wound cross-wise, so technically it works better with a thread that is pulled UP from the top rather than from the side. But honestly I've used it on both types of machines and it's worked just fine.

Hi Erica. I really enjoyed your quilting series. I purchased some of the Moda fabric (that same white that you mentioned) and the threads came off so easily from the ends once cut. I wished I could remember where I got it from, but I'm wondering if it was really the Moda line. :-/

I am trying to decide which "white" fabric to use. I read that Moda does not recommend using 9900-97 unless you are going to dye it because it is PFD--prepared for dye--and will absorb color from other fabrics when washed. Have you had any problems with this?

Hi, I use 9900-97 and it's a softer white, I also use color catchers when I wash so there is not any bleeding.

I want to try quilting. I have the issue of going all out when I do things so can you tell me what you do with all the quilts that you make? Or do you use all that fabric for other projects as well?

So far many of my quilts have been gifts for others. I have a few that I've made just for myself and they're hanging around our home :) Who knows at some point maybe I'll sell some too, but it's hard to sell a quilt for what it's really worth :) I also use my fabric for other projects like bags, pillows, and other fun stuff!

Help. I just read that Moda 9900-97 PFD is really for dying fabric. It is soft in color because some of the sizing and something else has been removed and this fabric is for people who what to dye fabric. Not to be use for quilts with colored fabric since when washed the colors could transfer onto the white and stay! I know 97 PFD does not come in jelly rolls, which I like to use at times. You happen to use the 97 PFD. Do you use anyother Moda whites? Soft white? If so what color/ number. Have you ever had issue with other colors transfering onto the PFD white on your quilts? Please advise.Thank you

Yes, that is technically true. That is why I always use a Shout Color Catcher for the first few washes to make sure the colors don't bleed onto my whites. After a couple of washes, I skip them and so far I haven't had any issues with the 9900-97. The only bleeding I've had was when I used a cheaper red fabric from JoAnn's with my whites. That one bled all over! :( But I've never had bleeding from other quality fabrics like Riley Blake, Moda, Etc. That said, I use 9900-97 because I prefer the softer white. If you're concerned about the bleeding you can use 9900-98. I don't like it as much because it's a very bright white, but you may have better luck if you tend to purchase fabrics from places like Walmart/JoAnns.

When looking for batting, do I want with scrim or without? Or am I looking at the wrong thing? Joann’s has so many options Nd so I first found 100% cotton but then don’t know with scrim or without?

Scrim acts as a stabilizer for the batting so I prefer it. If you get w/o scrim then you need to make sure your quilt lines are very close together so it doesn’t come apart in the wash.

You can slow down the speed by clicking on the gear and choosing playback speed. There is one that is .75 that slows her down. I kinda get a kick out of her speed and enthusiasm🤣
