Hi everyone. Welcome back for Part 2 in the How to Colour your quilt series. Spring is in the air and what better way to welcome it than playing with colour. Please check the NOTES on the video for all the links.

Just Get it Done Quilts Thanks for this! I also just watched your balance video about stash control. I wonder if you've any tips on how to shop from your own stash for backings. I abhor searching for the perfect backing only to find that the sale options are not what I am looking for. I tend to shop sales only. Do you have tips on easy ways to scrap together backings from your own stash that don't require a ton of work? I am a confident beginner. Love love love your videos!!

I just barely discovered your videos this morning about 5 hours ago. I've been watching practically nonstop!! Although I'm not a quilter, I am a cosplayer and as such, am somewhat of a designer. I'm also an artist of traditional mediums like watercolour, pastels, colored pencils, markers, and greyscale sketch art. Ergo I very much LOVE and appreciate your videos so much!! I've learned bits and pieces (and practiced) colour theory most of my creative life....yet no instructor nor text managed to break it down in ways that I could correlate the same things verbally, (con)textwise, and aurally. You quilt, perceive, and educate in an analogous format to how Alton Brown cooks and the way Ann Reardon bakes and makes confectionary. It makes my brain EXTREMELY happy to further fill in the gaps and listen to you so readily expound upon concepts I wasn't even aware of that I'd been missing until today!! I've had such a blindingly wonderful AHA!! moment, where my analytical scientific side and my abstract creative sides are getting along quite swimmingly. I envision these two halves as a curmudgeonly old cat (like Garfield) trying to stop falling in love with the happy sprightly kittenish Nermal yet failing spectacularly. xD

This is equivalent to a college-level color course. Even though, as an elementary ed graduate (many, many years ago, and having taught both art and color), having taken all the prerequisite art and Art Appreciation coursework before "Art for Elementary Teachers," I thought I had color down! No! Not even close. So, I'm going to treat this three-part series like a college-level class, do the homework, take notes, review, and review. This is "free" on KZbin!? Amazing. Thank you.

This information is excellent. I used to teach chemistry and physics and, when I was a new teacher, I was a substitute teacher in an art class tasked with teaching colour theory. I was great fun for me calling on all of my science background, but I’m sure the students thought I was crazy. Years ago, my husband bought me a class in colour theory with Kaffe Fassett and Kaffe’s first quilting book. Two of my friends also bought seats in the class, to great expense on their part. We were so excited about taking the class, I already knew about Kaffe from his history knitting. The class was, to be kind, unfortunate. Everyone was required to bring squares of multiple fabrics of various sizes. I thought that maybe we would mix and match fabrics to experiment with the different possible combinations. Instead, we were asked to lay out a quilt with our own fabrics, which was not helpful. When asked about how to combine colours, the response was “this is something that you either know or you don’t, it can’t be taught”. After we displayed our potential quilt tops, he walk around inspecting them like a general with his troops. My best friend had laid out a beautiful little quilt top full of roses. I could imagine it laid out under a shade tree by the stream while people in white outfits sat around it sipping tea and eating cakes. It was absolutely lovely. When Kaffe come to this quilt top he announced rather snidely “who’s responsible for this pink soufflé?!?” He was disgusted with it and let everyone know. He said it needed mustard yellow to make it right. For the rest of the class, Shirley sat next to me, hiding from everyone. She was mortified and so upset. I have to admit I’ve never bought any of his fabrics or books since then.

Cracking series on colour 👍 best i have seen.. Thanks for taking the trouble to explain it so well and show visual explanations/ examples. I adore colour and always have trouble making fabric choices as I want them all. This should help me have more of a ‘plan’ when shopping for fabrics. Caroline, uk

As someone who'd never known until watching these videos just how much of extended color theory I'd been missing.... the simplified and easy-to-grasp way she's explained it all here makes me feel simutaneously ecstatic, relieved, and exasperated that my base knowledge was so swiss-cheesed! Now it's not and I'm so thrilled! This can extend to virtually every medium on the visual spectrum..... paper, fabric, ink, powders, paints, leads, glass, metals.....WHEEEEE. It's like the difference between using the first prescription of eyeglasses I got 30 years ago vs the ones I have now.....the clarity is like night and day and I couldn't be happier!
