I love paint comparisons like these. Thank you! I bought Sennelier’s Helios Purple on the recommendation of Kim Crick in her Ultimate mixing palette on her website. Beautiful color! I also had a tiny tube of Winsor & Newton’s Quin Magenta which is also lovely. As time goes on I am honing in on favorites in the different brands and actually settling in on my own preferences. Surprisingly I’ve gone from only brights and transparents to really enjoying earthy opaques and pastels. And that has also coincided with an interest in gouache. All seem to have their place! Recently I’ve fallen in love with White Nights and even bought some tubes to use in an open desk palette in the studio. So many paints, so little time...😂

If you have the time to answer what would be your review of the favorite pigments she recommends? I have all her recommendations on my wish list with my finger on the check out button but I would love to hear if someone else has used her favorite pigments as a complete palette. The Van Gogh swatch was fascinating: I like Van Gogh for student grade a lot but the opacity was a shocker. I'd have sworn there was white in there. If you like transparency it won't do, but for those who love doing floral painting, it might be a winner and it could work well in flesh mixtures. And showing PR19 from Van Gogh, means someone can choose what is transparent to fill the Quin Rose spot. And I often use that Rembrandt Red Violet instead of Alizarin in palettes. Very good video.

Sennelier reds and yellows are so pretty. I am picky about my magenta, I had white nights pr122 on my palette for a long time, I tried other brands but for me it comes down to the flow of the paint, I like how White Nights paints and dries. I would love to try the Sennelier, I tend to like honey paints.

thank you for the comparison, Vee! This type of color is a must in my palette as a primary, i use it a lot both on its own and in mixes, especially with pthalo green. I started with Van Gogh permanent red violet too ^_^ Like you I used it all up and then got into artists grade paints anyway. Now I use PR122 and much prefer its clarity and vibrancy. I use Mijello, Winsor and Newton or White Nights, whatever I have handy works well for me. A little goes a long way so it takes a long time to be used up ^_^

I can perfectly see the whitish tint to the VG Rose on screen. And it is quite opaque indeed. I have this colour too (it comes with my VG Vibrant Colours set). People who talked to Royal Talens say that RT claim that the white tint/higher opacity in VG rose is due to fillers and extenders, not PW6. But then, their Rembrandt line also comes with the colour Rose and it’s based on PR122 and PW6. Hmmmmm 🤔
@lindsaykorth2713
@lindsaykorth2713 2 жыл бұрын
I observed the same about Rembrandt's Rose version, which I bet it's pretty much the same as VG's. VG Rose was one of the most frustrating paints (pure and in mixtures) I first bought, alongside Cerulean, Cobalt blue and Azo Yellow Light, for they have the same issues - opaque fillers or simply white pigment). Fortunately, I also had Permanent Red Violet and Quin. Rose, both pretty nice paints which I used a lot.
@alylyu3659
@alylyu3659 2 жыл бұрын
@@lindsaykorth2713 It’s just strange that they admit to using PW6 in Rembrandt Rose but not in VG Rose. They keep saying it’s the opaque filler that makes the VG Rose appear pastel. Which opaque filler is that I wonder and why not to simply add PW6 and/or admit to it if they want an opaque rose this bad? =) With cerulean they just tried to imitate Cerulean Rembrandt based on PB35. Semi-opaque granulating paint. Of course a mix of phtalo blue and titanium white won’t give the same effects that the PB35 based cerulean give, but shade wise they came pretty close. It’s still better to just use pure phtalo blue and add white if the need comes.
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 2 жыл бұрын
@@alylyu3659 i think opaque fillers are cheaper than PW6 (don't quote me on that) so it's possible that they didn't use any PW6.

By watching your videos, I'm really wanting to study more about pigments. I want to get new watercolors, but I think the smartest thing to do is instead of not so much going after company names, I'm going to go after the pigments I like, and even if I have to end up investing in single tubes (with invisible finances 🙄)- I'm sure I'll be happier that I picked and chose the colors I want. I'm not so much into primary colors although it seems you can get a bunch of different colors from just a few tubes, but that's not me. I need to have a lot of different colors and create my own unique mixes, but I'm so glad I subscribed to you and plan on binging your other videos! 😄🤗👩‍🎨🎨🖌️💖

i think that's definitely a good way to go about it. considering you already have so much experience with colour mixing and all that, it should be so easy for you to create something with the colours you love. i'm sure by now you know about granulation. it's definitely one of those things i fell in love with but depending on the subject you paint, granulation might not be the right answer. so it all boils down to preference in the end. this PR122 vid is just so sad, i bought way too many PR122 thinking there might be differences but honestly, they're pretty much the same. the subtle differences don't matter at all when i'm mixing it with, say, green or blue.

I bought my Holbein PR122 watercolor years ago and back then it was still called Rose Violet. I still have it. The Holbein Gouache PR122 I just bought last week still call it Rose Violet. Same with their oil. Weird that they changed the name only in their watercolor range. PS, as far was the artist grade, I only see that the ones you think look duller or more opaque are higher pigment loads. Either you laid them on thicker or its higher pigment content in the tube. All student grade paint use fillers with the pigment. The Van Gogh Red Violet, I hate. it lacks the cool pink that I love. It's just another Quin violet PV19 . Usually called Quinacridone Violet in most brands. I use Schmincke PR122 most.

Are you talking about their opacity? I feel like the color choice in their standard 12+3 set is a bit unfortunate. They recently added a really nice transparent yellow PY128 to their range, but still they have the very opaque PY184 as lemon yellow and their Azo yellows have now white in their formulation. Their permanent red light is also quite opaque, while they have a beautiful transparent "tomato" red (PR149) that could be includes instead. The cerulean blue is also a mix with white and PB15 pigment. They just could have added phthalo blue PB15 to have a "cyan" and since there is already white in the palette you could mix the color easily yourself. 😅
