Quincy Jones on Michael Jackson | Music 2009 | SXSW

The 2009 SXSW Music Keynote speech from Quincy Jones contained many unforgettable moments. Among them was a series of stories about his work and friendship with Michael Jackson. After meeting on the set of "The Wiz," Jackson convinced Jones to produce his next record, and went against label advice to pursue this collaboration. What ensued was history, and 'Q' shares his unique perspective on the blockbuster of 'Thriller' and the breaking of racial barriers at MTV. As we remember Michael Jackson's music and note his deep and wide cultural impact, we thank Quincy Jones for sharing his remarkable life stories at SXSW '09.

If it wasn't for the work he did with Michael Jackosn, NOBODY in the 21st century would be asking anything of quincy jones. Yes, quincy was a great producer of tv and pop and jazz of yester-year,but let's be honest his work with MICHAEL JACKSON is why anyone recongnizes him today. Even when Quincy worked with artists in the 1970's like "The Brothers Johnson" no one was rushing to put him on an interview. It was his work with Michael Jackson that brought a new generation to recognize him.

I think Quincy at the time remained pretty professional - Michael didn't even tell Quincy he was going to use a different producer, he left that for Frank Dileo to tell Q about. Teddy Riley has said that Q was the one who recommended Teddy to MJ, and MJ called Q to have the first listen to Dangerous and give his seal of approval. Which he did. But I believe the relationship became more and more distant as the years went by.

Greek here and I confirm the above. MJs pronunciation was a lot closer to how everyone says Socrates. The accent is in the "A" which in Greek is pronounced the same as in the word "Alpha". With that in mind, SocrAtis is how it is pronounced (instead of SOcrates).

I don't know what your knowledge about vitiligo is but I am a teacher and I have a student that has this skin disorder. She is white and she has bloches on her skin that look porcelain white like a ghost. Now she is dealing with stress because she is preparing for the examinations to enter university. stress makes her situation worse...it's expanding everywhere face, hands...she avoids sun and she is using special make up to cover it and she is covering it(I only found out from her Mom).

Wrong man. Quincy is the one who wanted to follow a trend known as Rap. MJ hated rap and thought it was a temporary phase. This became an issue during the Bad sessions and caused a rift between them. By the end of the Bad tour and the break after it was clear that Rap and hip hop were where things were headed. Quincy was right. By then bridges had been burned and MJ again wrongly thought Q was too old to be a part of rap/hip hop. Quincy meanwhile recorded and produced one of the best albums of all time in Back on the Block ... full of R&b, rap, hip hop, acapella, Jazz.. you name it... every major vocalist and musician in black music history were on it, but no Michael Jackson. A real shame... Dangerous was an OK album but no where near as cohesive and meaningful as what could have been. Teddy Riley is good for a one off song, but producing almost an entire album his stuff gets real old real quick..

Even after all the interviews etc, you can still tell that Quincy loved Michael. He was a father to MJ. He was heavily involved in life throughout his life and you can see he played a big part in shaping Michael into a man. That's not true at all. Michael and Q went on to produce BAD together but Quincy was limiting Michael and wanted too much control of his sound. Michael had to cut him loose because he was so much more than a simple studio artist. His gut feeling told him to get away because he needed to grow musically and keep up with modern times. The maturity in Dangerous compared to BAD is astounding. I'm glad he made the switch. In the end,Q was just a producer, nothing more. Their relationship was business.

Michael and Q were dynamite together. I love everything they created together. But in the end I think like some people have suggested that Q was holding on a bit too tight when it came to control over the direction Michael was going in with his music. And Michael had endured a lot of that kind of control from his father Joe, and I think Michael just wasn't having anymore of that. He needed to be in control of things himself, needed to be the captain of his own ship so to speak. He was maturing and the "Dangerous " album with Teddy Riley reflected that. Michael always had some kind of internal spiritual guidance that was directing his work and he really knew the business of the music industry. Those things (along with his innate intelligence) were the reasons he was so successful. Not to mention his talent! If he had survived he would have went on to mold the music industry in ways that would have drawn other artists to him (giving them more control over their music and finances) and consolidating his own power and continued success in the industry. Michael was one very smart cookie and I think certain factions of the industry feared that and so it wasn't allowed to be. Respect to Quincy for this interview. I always enjoy hearing his stories about MJ. Some of the stories are quite amusing...like the stories about the interaction between MJ and Prince.

I think Mr Jones knows what he is speaking about Michael' skin...it was not skin disorder, it was body dysmorphic disorder...and I am glad that he told what was he thinking becouse that is a big lesson for all the milions people who actually don't accept themselves...we all love Michael, he was really touched by God.
