Have you made any content or FAQ videos that explain how you got into books, it and how you got into Scifi? Or any videos about yourself? Would be cool to hear what you do when not reading books and making KZbin videos.. It'd be cool to hear what you did in college and what you do for a living. But if that's too personal, it'll be cool to hear how you got into books.. I am just fascinated with how so many people are closet nerds. So always interesting when you find out your DM is an investment banker. Or someone who narrates videos on KZbin cuts and dyes hair for a living.. xD

A video on your favorite short stories, and compilations of short sci fi stories would be really cool! I'm curious! I liked Richard Matheson a lot...I am still salty that the Will Smith adaption of "I AM LEGEND," changed the ending =/

So happy you are covering Adrian Tchaikovsky; he's fantastic. Also I think his 'Dogs of War' series pairs well with 'Children of Time'; also tackling similar ideas of uplifted animal intelligence (genetically engineered animal super-soldiers) but much more near-future, over a shorter time period, and far more politically charged.

Pandorum was a cool movie that dealt with space travel and hyper sleep and it’s mental effects. Highly recommend it. The show Wayward Pines doesn’t involve space travel but someone has to wake up once every 5 years for a few thousand years as they watch the world heal from nuclear war. Also a cool concept watch

I was just thinking about that show recently and couldn't remember what it was called, even more interesting was what happened to the surviving humans on earth. This kind of reminds me of C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series. Basically, humans were headed towards a potential colony planet and the computer that calculates the jumps malfunctioned due to negligence. The humans end up in unfamiliar space and have to rapidly find a new way to take on fuel. There was no orientation in space because none of the stars were familiar and so it became do or die. Like, the ship went from an exploratory vessel to a generation ship to a space station(two actually but I digress)! We don't find out about the nitty gritty details for a long time(the series has almost 30 books) but it's an interesting take on how humanity could potentially start over and how divisions & factions can progress in situations we simply haven't had to face before.

There was a short novel I read when I was around 11 years old. It was about the end of time in the sense that, after a million years of various cultures across space time travelling(using space ships) it stretched space and time to the pointthat it was falling apart, and the only thing i can remember clearly was when the protagonists came across a horizon( guess you can say it was a Horizon event except the light disc was a physical plane one could walk on) littered with time travelling space ships in various states of disrepair and others in pristine condition. They were the last to arrive to witness it all end. Wish i could find it again, but out of all the Sci-Fi novels, that stuck with me the most.

This book was really fascinating in general, but what stood out to me the most was the body-horror Adrian manages to pull off with the women preserved in the satellite for thousands of years by accident. She wakes up for only a few moments, realized her ruined eyeless body was dying, and somehow gets immediately backed up into a computer, which isn't successful and turns her into an insane broken copy that just broadcasts screaming on the planet below for hundreds of years.

Thanks again, Quinn. Adrian is a great yarnweaver. One of the first re-purposed generational ships in scifi-history is the Swedish nobelist' Harry Martinson's poem-form epic Aniara from 1956. I just re-read it. The book has aged quite well. I cannot really read it in Swedish, and my native tongue (Finnish) translation is a pain. But the English version is good, Swedish being so close a relative to English.

Its a possibility but also maybe not. Adrian is a zoologist and is really fond of insects(a fact that really comes through if you read his "Shadows of the Apt" novels). It might just be that since both species are based on arachnids, they naturally are similar to each other.

Great video! Just a heads up, the word "sentient" just means a capacity to feel sensation, or pleasure and pain in neurology and biology. Spiders are already demonstrably sentient, as they can be proved to experience pleasure and pain just as well as any given human can be proved to. Adrian actually has a love for arthropods and their cognition in particular, which inspires him to write similar creatures into his stories. The spiders in Children of Time are sapient, which is the characteristic of being able to think abstractly and understand a concept of self. Both sentience and sapience are evolved behavioral patterns, and can be argued to be a spectrum. Both sapience and sentience, as far as is demonstrable, seem to require a central nervous system. Sapience is a relatively new emergent property, but sentience has probably been a characteristic of all life with a central nervous system since the precambrian.

As an aside, may I recommend you read the Orthogonal trilogy? It's a very... different kind of sci-fi. The basic premise is a universe where physics are different by just changing a plus sign to a minus sign in a basic equation governing reality, and all the physical consequences that follow from that, such as the elimination of a universal speed of light, the natural instability of matter in many configurations, and time essentially behaving more like a spacial dimension to the extent that any matter travelling in a direction, wait for it, orthogonal to it can "collide" before the entities that are travelling in the other direction can even be aware it's coming. I can't say it's the best sci-fi I've ever read, but it's very unique and explores some interesting physics and some sociological ideas along the way.

This video reminded me of a show I watched when I was younger, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. In it, you learn that every reflective surface could potentially become a portal that leads to a paralelle world called Ventara. There, the planet had once come under attack from an alien force and to combat it, 13 individuals were given advent decks which allow them to don power suits. Now, each suit was key to the DNA of its user, and so only the owner of the deck or his Earth counter-part could use it. And the only person who could reprogram the decks was their creator, Eubulon who was thought to have been destroyed. Because of this, the ventarans believe that the advent decks would be useless and more importantly, they themselves would be defenceless if the users of the decks were to die. So to push back the eventuality that the deck owners would die of old age, they are placed in cryopods, with one defender awake at a time for a year while the others sleep. That meant that Each warrior would be asleep for 12 years before taking his shift of watching over the planet alone for an entire year... Even if it's not as long as decades, that has to be just as disorienting

Just finished reading Children of Time, it was very interesting, I loved the spider point of view and how their "technology" evolved. Regarding the Generational Ship aspects of the novels, I recommend you read Seveneves if you haven't I would love to hear your thoughts about it

Thank you! Not only does Quinn offer compelling book selections (I too enjoyed this one) but so do the viewers. I very much look forward to checking out Seveneves

Reminds me of the film _Pandorum,_ which is quite good IMO, rather underrated.

Thanks for talking about this awesome book Quinn! Please take a look at Vernor Vinge and "A Fire Upon the Deep" and accompanying materials! I read that book when I was about 12yrs old digging through my dad's collection and I've loved it ever since. Along with Armor by John Steakley and the Deathworld Trilogy by Harry Harrison a Fire Upon the Deep really help cement my love for science fiction at a young age.

Okay so I loathe spiders, in general, but I also adored this series, and am super grateful for the reccommendation and breakdown. I had literally just picked it myself on audible before I saw your evolution vid!

Just finished this book tonight... amazing. That was an emotional roller coaster. The conclusion was better than I had hoped.
