If you want them good at something, encourage them.in their teens .... if you want them brilliant, get them genuinely interested as early as possible, just like this kid. Future videos will address how EVERY WATT of power generated comes from burned fuel. But I'm not convinced it will negatively affect mileage. My hypothesis is a modern turbine blade is so much more efficient than an old Ford that it can harvest energy from the change in momentum of incoming wind rather than waste it through pure drag. If correct, this would not violate 2nd law of thermo, rather recover spent energy from already burned fuel. Regardless, we will measure it and publish the results either way! Thanks to a suggestion in the comments I now have a ScanGaugeII that plugs into the OBDII port for reporting instantaneous as well as trip mileage. In fact I just published a video with the kids baking a pie for PI-day (3/14) where we had the gauge on the dash the whole time. The algorithm doesn't prioritize "wholesome" so very few people are seeing that one. @@imitane Agreed -- this seems to be experimental science for educational purposes (which is a great idea). I'm just referring to the general principle that you can't get more energy out of something than you put in... in this case I expect that the generator will eventually be disengaged during acceleration and cruising, and engaged while decelerating and coasting, similar to the ideas of regenerative breaking).

Really great video! Hey, something that might be worth considering...Since it sounds like your goal is to extract energy that would have been wasted, you might want to consider miniaturizing the wind turbines, such that you have quite a few of them across the hood. If you have the blades nearly touching the skin of the hood, the blades will be in the boundary layer as well as the moving airstream. You may actually end up being able to extract more energy that would otherwise be wasted using this approach; you might end up creating vortex generators that will reduce the total amount of drag on the vehicle, helping to offset the increased amount of drag you are creating with the wind turbine. It wouldn't be a total offset, as that's not possible, but it *might* reduce the total amount of drag you are producing with the wind turbine. The drawback is that when the blades are in the boundary layer during their rotation, the very tips of the blades (the portion in the boundary layer) won't be producing any power. But the boundary layer is extremely thin, so that shouldn't matter much, if at all. Another possibility that uses your current design.... move it closer to the front of the vehicle. I assume you are thinking about how there is less drag on a vehicle when you "draft" behind a big truck. I *think* that you'll have better results by tucking in just a bit closer to the "truck." It will be really interesting to see the results of your test... Are you creating more drag with the wind turbine than the drafting effect you are generating? Yes. But will the amount of energy produced by the wind turbine offset this? Hmmm.... I anxiously await the results!

I know that there are several comments regarding having your kids working with you but I had to repeat what the other viewers have already said. It is such a wonderful thing not only seeing you engaging in these projects with your children but having them involved in actual calculations is superb. This is what every parent should be doing including myself when it comes to our kids. electric cars with or with out solar panels on the vehicle, what is the most aerodynamic hubcap/rim, completely smooth, that is gonna provide a big range difference, make some noise clothes lines for drying clothes add on second layer to windmill towers rather than chopping them down, use the same windmill footing for millions of years, just fix up the moving parts, solar installations for rural areas, eliminate all the power line waste

He'll lose more than he gains unless he only engages while slowing down or going down hill. It'd be better to put a Honda EU2200i generator in the back, MPG wise.
