Actually, the slipper change in Wizard of Oz happened because the fact that the film was in color was a _huge_ deal. That's precisely why they made Munchkin Land so over-the-top bright and colorful; they wanted the first scene to feature color to have a major impact, basically like a giant _"LOOK AND BE AMAZED, BITCHES."_ In a similar fashion, they wanted the slippers to _pop_ on the screen. Silver doesn't really do that, hence why they changed them to a nice, vibrant red.

@@IsThatAShortJoke somewhat yeah. Coloring film was a pretty expensive process at the time and the wizard of oz was the biggest movie to date that had been made and was going to be done in color. When it is a story about a magical fantasy land, they wanted to make it SEEM so magical and fancy and special. And color would do that. Films largely in black and white, and the few color films you may see were still not vibrant. But then BAM first film many see in vivid powerful color, is in this magic land of Oz. It was one of the first films done with technicolor, most certainly the biggest. And it actually helped serve narrative purpose. In Avatar, the 3d was not really a functional component of the narrative to the experience. It was a wow factor and a technological marvel. But color was a big narrative component as part of the story in the Wizard of Oz.

This plus also Wizard of Oz was the first movie made in three-strip technicolor, so they intentionally made the slippers bright ruby red to show off the new technology. I think that's also why there's that transition from sepia tone to full color between kansas and the rest of the movie. Really cool and interesting stuff!

Aunt Mildred's word on the mirror is actually super easy and I'll tell you why. Aunt Mildred will wait a few seconds and then write her word at the same speed, pretty fast. All you have to do is pay attention to the speed of the words. Once I've realized this, I've guessed the word correctly every time.
