Is it the end ? I’m quitting physical media
No more Blu ray, no more 4k UHD.
This video gives you a reason why and what I plan to do.
My main worry is that my collecting has turned more into hoarding. Have I lost the love of collecting a little ? I need a hard reset.
Have you struggled with your collection or taken a break from collecting in the past ? Do you plan to make changes to your collecting habits ?
Let me know in the comments, let’s discuss…

I used to collect hundreds of movies but I've greatly pared it down these days, and I honestly recommend most people at least do what you're doing: THINK about what you're really buying, and why. Are you ACTUALLY watching those movies? If the answer is no, and it most likely is, you may as well stream or rent those digitally and buy only the absolute favorites. That's how I do it now: Watch? Streaming. Want? iTunes. Keep (because I LOVE it/it's super rare)? Physical. "But you don't own anything, they can take it away, bla bla bla". If you're hit by a truck tomorrow or your house catches fire it doesn't matter anyway. Life is SO incredibly short, don't leave a vault of unwatched movies behind when you go.

100% agree with you I couldn’t see it in the past but now I’ve taken a step back I can see how much of it I don’t really need anytime in the foreseeable There aren’t many titles that I hold on the shelf that aren’t available anywhere else. It’s been a silly game holding so much. That hoarding mentality. The argument of not owning digital content is not a license to keep absolutely everything just incase. It’s silly to collect for that over collecting for the love of it.

Woah, a year. Now that’s a challenge. 300 movies is a nice stack to be working through though. Depending what rate you get things watched I bet there’s still about a years worth to work through. 30 days pales in comparison… but at least hoping it gives me that reset and time to consider previous buying habits. The trade ins and sort through the collection will also be happening in that time too. Hopefully get some clarity and perspective

@@PhillwithadoubleL It is a challenge! I can only watch roughly 2-3 movies a week. It'll take me a lifetime to finish. Lol! I work in Goodwill's E-commerce dept where I see literally thousands of pieces of physical media and books come through on a daily basis to sort through. It tests my patience every day! I also want to move out of state from my parent's house eventually which means I definitely can't take my entire collection with me. Best of luck to you! Everything you've just said rings true with me. Collecting is taking over my life, but I've noticed a pattern of the excitement of the wait to then just put whatever I've ordered straight onto the shelf. I'm going to make a start of stopping watching all the KZbin channels doing unboxing content. This is where a lot of my purchases start. I have joked before about I need help, when I actually think I do. Good luck with your 30 days away from physical media, this is something I should consider.

I watch some of the KZbin unboxing videos from time to time too. I have issue with them though, they’re all very excitable about everything the package offers… all of them. It almost turns into a sales pitch (although they’re not really selling anything). It’s all sunshine and rainbows for whatever release they’re looking at that week. It’s not the reality for a lot of collectors… the recent Arrow release of Enter the Video store was a temptation… stacked with nostalgia and a nicely presented box. Really, it’s like buying poop and covering it in glitter and a bow. Most of those movies are potentially a curiosity view but I don’t think anyone really needs them as part of a permanent collection… and yet, due to the unboxing videos and the hype leading up to release. I still had that temptation. Consumerism man, it’s a funny old beast. Sorry, think i went of subject and gave a mini rant. But yeah, wish there was a little more honesty with some of these videos rather than the way EVERYTHING is worth picking up… And you’re not alone. I’ve also picked up titles that have gone straight to the shelf and still sit there sealed up. It’s that sort of thing I need to break from.

I think the problem also is we've got to show ourselves and other people that we are real movie fanatics. If we stop collecting movies what is that saying that is saying that we are not really movie fans. And it gets worse even though we are running out of space we start slowing down in buying physical Media. And that starts to worry me thinking I need to prove that I am a movie fan. I have not watched a physical Media desk for such a long time trying to get things off Sky. Sometimes being a movie fan is a pain😢
@PhillwithadoubleL
@PhillwithadoubleL 8 ай бұрын
Yes. I’ve often wondered this. Does having the collection prove you’re more of a movie fan. Absolutely not… and yet we’re kinda pushed into that mindset by everything around us. Sometimes I consider that being a collector means I’ve halls risky given less time to watching movies because I’m always searching for more movies. I’d now rather focus on trying to get to at least see the movies I want rather than chasing down every other thing that’s being released… and not watching it because I’m then chasing down the next… and the next. Let’s get back to loving the movies more than loving the collecting. It’s what we’re in this for !

A break is good in everything. It makes us appreciate what we have and makes routine exciting. But don't stop collecting, just find your happy balance. I think there's no point in reselling unless something is a rare collectors item that you don't particularly like. Better store it away and 1 day you'll find a use for it, even if it's just giving it away. But keep your visible collection clear and something you identify yourself with. Like you said - don't let it own you. Good luck and let us know how you're doing. Love your videos.

I won’t completely stop collecting. I love film. No chance I’m completely quitting the physical media. I just need that break for that evaluation of my collection and why I’ve been keeping ‘some’ of them. The DVDs are mostly going to be going, they don’t get used anymore. There will be a handful I keep but the main mass will be gone… mostly the tv shows I seem to be keeping for the DVD. Things like Veronica Mars / ER / Rescue Me… some of the shows I did upgrade to Blu which I’ll likely be keeping.

Great video! Good idea, and good luck! Looking forward to your next video! Another tip: for my movies I have two 'stages' in my house. First stage is the living room. I keep around 50 movies there that are my favorites. The second stage is on the first floor. This is where I keep a stash of another 50 movies I'd like to keep, in a small box. There is room for about 50 more. I might add a third stage in the attic but I think I don't need that for my movies just yet (I do need that for my books though). When I notice a certain title never makes it back to stage 1 (or stage 2) I conclude that I don't care enough about it to own it and then I sell it. Gives a whole new meaning to 'physical media'.

I like the idea ! One thing I am plotting to do… which is sounding pretty similar. Is sorting a section that I was going to aim around the movies that made me… the ones which really informed my tastes over the years. The ones which I will force upon my kids when they’re old enough… that would be my stage 1 I think. I’m also considered a look at my books in a similar fashion. My books have been kinda neglected in making way for Blu ray shelf space but I need to claim some of that back. It can’t all just be about the discs.

Yes, that's what I have in my living room! The movies that made me. Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Aliens, the good stuff. All I need to do there is look at the cases to take me back. I also keep track of my movies in a custom made app. Everytime I buy something I realize I need to spend 15 minutes updating my app. That's a thing I need to consider before buying. If I don't feel like spending those 15 minutes for adding the movie then I won't buy it.

January here was tough weather, so I stayed home a lot (I only brought in 5 titles, and one of those was for a movie I already had but it turned out I only had disc 1!). But I had an interesting experience last week - I went to the thrift store to look at the usual wall of media, and I actually lost interest in trying to go through every shelf to see what was there. The other store I went to had a few titles I wanted, but the condition of the discs wasn't up to par, so I passed on them. The "younger" collector in me would have gone for it, and gotten the discs cleaned if necessary. I think that's telling me is my existing collection is nearing completion and now the focus is on curating and enjoying it.

Loving your videos Phil. Good to see a KZbinr discussing topics such as this. First off, good luck with your plan. As for me, I’ve really slowed down now with physical. I only buy what I really need in my collection, which mainly consists now of boutique label releases. The rest of my movie buying is digital through iTunes. I’ve been buying that way for over 10 years now and built a collection of over 2000. I use the app cheap charts to keep an eye on price drops to pick up good deals. I’m happy with this set up. I still feed my physical need as well as embracing the digital revolution. My children have no interest in physical, and watch everything either on Apple TV or their iPads.

Thank you 🙏🏼 I find that a lot of collectors outright dismiss digital through iTunes etc before fully using. I’ve used iTunes for a while now too (needed a lot when working away from home). I love using the Apple TV box to view content, it looks so much better than the apps on other devices AND a lot of the time we also have those extras. It sounds like you’re already in the sort of position I think I’m moving towards. Keeping my physical to my favourites… I’ll possibly also buy a few other bits physically but planning to be fast to move thing on if they’re not up to my personal rewatchability bar. I went through a period of collecting Disney Blu ray movies for my kids. Got the majority up to a point. Then, Disney+. Since then it’s safe to say none of the physical discs have been used at all. Nice to hear from others who have been going through similar.

No worries, man. Nothing wrong with taking a break from collecting. If you want to take a break, just take a break, and enjoy your collection - and decide what ones you'd rather keep, too. If you feel like sorting out some titles you don't feel are worth keeping. Physical media - what you have in your collection - is already there for you and what comes out will still be out there for you when you come back to it after you take a break. :) The only thing I'd worry about is limited editions but even then most of those you could still track down if so inclined. :) I sometimes do this myself, take a break from collecting as much - then I go on a frenzy (lol) at times and pick up a lot of releases. I've done the same with vinyl records, too.

Yeah, I’ve actually purposely missed out on a couple of limited editions and still been able to pick them up at a better price further down the line. It’s that initial desperate panic that you might not be able to get something. Most of the time, it doesn’t really matter that much. It’s just re teaching myself that it’s ok to miss out on some things.

Gaming market seems a mess with everything at the moment. I’ve seen the retro stuff sky rocketing in price the last few years. Must admit I get increasingly frustrated with gaming on consoles for all of the add ons and extras and the need to set up accounts to play a game (had to open an Ubisoft account to play Prince of Persia). At least with the older consoles they were less reliant on the online portion and the need to set up specific accounts. I think the music industry is the one to watch with where things are heading… over reliance on streaming content / subscription base either a physical format coming in limited numbers and at a premium.

Majority is on Steam anyway, and others try their own like EA and have to go crawling back. Bit like netflix, and can see the multiple new services crawling back to just let netflix do it. Do keep my PS3, still can play the old MW on it for free since it was pre subscriptions 😁 And it's got Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray for my old 3D TV. Music is a funny one, HMV are pinning on Vinyl, but it's a fad tbh. Their shops are selling Member Berries so don't know how thatl crash again, and it will. BluRay/Physical Media is great as a remedy to Video Streaming's license issues. Jurassic World 2 +3 on netflix, no 1st one. Picked it up in a charity shop for £1, the 3D version. Solves that problem. Also picked up LOTR Trilogy for £1.50 just because it was there. A, I wouldn't have got the 3D version online. B, Google Movies sells the digital LOTR for £10, and £15 4k. Isn't on netflix. £1.50 I'm a happy chap

Best way to stop buying more stuff (in my case games) is to avoid youtube and facebook. If I stopped watching other collectors and review videos then I wasnt in the mindset to buy 😂

I agree. So many posts across various platforms that all tell you how good something is. That constant stream of things being sold to you. I’ve left a couple of groups I was in, started to recognise that there was a certain competitiveness which really drove that desire to order more.

Not gonna lie… it has some slightly difficult moments. I’ve seen a couple of sales pop up including an item I did actually want. Pretty sure it’ll still be there in the next sale though. I’m missing books on my commute to work too. There are always options available though. Digital does offer up a much of options.

@@PhillwithadoubleL I have 3 large rooms full of books, video games, movies, music, RPG, board games, artwork, figures and various other collectibles. I've had a lot of anxiety with the decision to sell ALL OF IT. Last weekend, I unloaded an entire van full of stuff to a couple friends of mine (of course I sold it for a fraction of what I paid). That helped to get me going; but the bigger test will be this weekend when I take my SUV along with a trailer full of stuff to a store to sell another chunk. -- that may sound like "a lot" but this only represents about 1/3 of my collection; and it represents the part of my collection that I feel the least anxiety with letting go. After that the real anxiety starts as I look at possibly unloading the rest. HOWEVER; I am very hopeful that this huge weight I've felt from this collection will be relieved, and it will be worth it the next time I look at moving; AND the huge savings I will incur by not pre-ordering every single thing under the sun! After this, I will do what I said I would never do... go full digital... Good luck my friend!

I'm trying to slowing down my blu ray buying as I'm watching my budget plus I've got so many unwatched movies. I'm limiting my self to no more than four movies a month at the moment.

Are you feeling like you’re missing out on anything by limiting yourself ? I’ve been trying to avoid looking at anything online shopping wise as I’ve been doing these 30days. That urge to jump online everyday has been there but seems to be subsiding… and it’s helping not looking. I’m not feeling like I’m missing anything yet.

Well I had to spend out on a new car so moneys a bit tight at the moment, If there is some thing I'm desperate for I will buy it. I guess its a habit hunting for new movies and buying the new shiny thing.@@PhillwithadoubleL

That’s the thing… my mindset has been to get things straight away. Regardless if I have the time to watch them. I want to change that mindset. The Cameron films, it won’t matter if I have them straight aways they’ll still be available further down the line… they’re not limited. If they sell out somehow then they’ll do another pressing. It’s that slightly irrational fear of missing out that has driven my purchasing habits, I just want to try and change / reset that mindset.

The collection has got to reflect you and your personality if it’s just a mish mash of everything there’s no order to it you want people to see your display and be like that’s a very phill thing…..the emotion you felt at exactly 5.00 minutes in that’s addictive behaviour straight up staring down the barrel of those 30 days without ordering and it’s the ordering that’s the addictive part shoppers high…..these 30 days will at least hold you back a bit and help you get over that initial rush of lower level feelings You don’t need to own everything especially if Your not into everything makes no sense

Yes 🙌🏼 that’s exactly what I NEED to get back to. The collection must reflect me. I’ve been sorting through some bits already. There’s some stuff I 100% straight up won’t watch. The sort through is going to be a process. I’m sure there will be other rediscoveries along the way.

I'm afraid I can't wish you luck with this project, because you're 100% wrong. You don't need to stop buying physical media. You need to buy more. And more. Concepts like "purpose" and "reason" are irrelevant. The only thing that's important is embracing your addiction and getting more stuff. Not only should you NEVER throw anything away, but you should also immediately adopt the practice of roaming around your neighborhood and going through dumpsters looking for physical media that other misguided souls have tragically assumed (incorrectly) that they could live without. Their bad choices will add to your obsessive/compulsive euphoric fulfillment. Regarding your children and their lack of interest in physical media, your best solution is to send them to a boarding school in some other country until they reach the age of thirty. They are a bad influence on you and a hindrance to your collecting lifestyle. Now, remove that ghastly yellow tape and search for a good support group that can help you get through this crisis. And remember: I care.

Thank you. Thank you for laying down some truths. It’s difficult when you find yourself on a dark path. Thanks to kind souls like you in or have a reason to continue collecting. I feel like I can rejoin some of the groups I’d been avoiding through temptation and again… become part of the collective of collectors. Those that care about preserving the entire history of film over their health and mental well-being regardless of how much they care for a specific movie. I must re-learn the importance of physical media and remember that any digital choices can be pulled from me anytime without notice. I’m not sure I could live with myself if my digital copy of Morbious got removed and I didn’t ever pick up the physical release to keep forever.
