In this video, I'm sharing why we're quitting The Good & The Beautiful Language Arts curriculum and what we're going to be using instead. We were using level K of The Good & The Beautiful Language Arts homeschool curriculum, but we stopped it about a month ago and have decided to use a different curriculum with a more streamlined and hands-on approach.

We experienced the fast pace feeling as well. Instead of plowing ahead through it anyway, we would take a break for a few weeks from the workbook and just focus on the beginning reader boxes. This helped so much! Each time we went back to the notebook after mastering the beginning reader box she was fully ready to move on. This curriculum works very well if you use all the reader books that go along with it, and take your time. Don’t fee like you have to get through the book in a 9 month segment of time. It took my daughter 12 months.

It is a beautiful curriculum. :) We actually took several breaks just as you described but in the end, it just wasn't the right fit for us. I'm so glad that we have so many different curriculums to choose from so we can cater so well to our children. I certainly have plans to revisit TGTB LA in the future but will be using something else for a little bit. :)

We used and LOVED AAR! I hope it is a good fit in your home for your little guy! Mama, I am so proud of you for realizing and noticing this! As homeschooling mamas...sometimes we want to hold on to things regardless of how it fits in our home. I am excited to see how this transition helps! 💜

We are going for it. Pandemic forced us into this decision. Pulled our daughter out of Christian (not religious or catholic) School because in Illinois there is a mask mandate. I’m the teacher (dad). We’ve always loved teaching at home even out of school. Starting first grade. I appreciate this but I’m going for it. Very helpful.

I really needed to see this video. I've been struggling so hard with my 6yo with the kinder cirriculum. He loved and flew through the primer k stuff. And so far we also love the math. But man. There are some serious flaws with the language. I feel like I've done him such a disservice by trying to push through. But I'm going to look into other options and see if I can find something else in our budget.

I’m in the same place. I used this with my oldest and we have gone slowly with it this year, and it’s still been a thing. The worst is that she is so frustrated with herself. I finally realized the curriculum needs to go and I do feel guilty I didn’t switch it sooner. I’m switching to Logic of English and we are starting from the beginning in hopes of strengthening areas of weakness as she can read simple beginner books. But I definitely relate to feeling like you’ve done him a disservice because I feel the same.

We are going through this EXACT thing right now with TGTB level K! We went through the Pre-K and K Primer levels, and then in the K level, we got through lesson 34 (we homeschool through the summer) and my 6 year old was in tears by the end. It was moving WAY too fast! We plan on stopping for awhile, using something else to really get the foundations of reading, and then perhaps going back to TGTB when he is older. My 8 year old, who is a very strong reader, is using TGTB level 3 and we love it for her. So you may decide to go back to it one day! But thank you SO much for this video! It encouraged me to look into All About Reading for my son.

Same here. When we started learning about nouns and stuff I was like 🤯 He was NOT ready for that. He was still learning how to read! The idea of “noun” was just TOO much right now. I threw in the towel around the same lesson.

I'm in the exact same spot, we used TGTB K primer and it worked SO WELL. Now that we're in Level K, it's become a MASSIVE struggle. My son is also on the early side for reading (not quite 5) and I feel like the lessons are just way above his comprehension. I've heard wonderful things about All About Reading, but wasn't sure how it compared, so I really appreciate your review.

I felt your issues with level k while using the prek primer. There were so many topics in each lesson (even though simple). The capital and lower case, plus sound, plus writing, plus other lesson for the day. My daughter was just getting overwhelmed and frustrated. We moved to the all about reading prereading. We love it! So much more focused. We still cover simple counting and the other lovely things in TGATB curriculum, but separately.

I used TGTB Level K with my daughter. She was just out of kindergarten when we started. She learned a lot and advanced her reading significantly over the summer. I encourage you to try again after your son completes kindergarten and see how you like it after that. The extra components didn't bother us because my daughter already knew how to read and was just increasing speed with the program. 😊 That being said with my 4 year old I did prek and primer. I'm switching to Masterbooks for their phonics program for my incoming kindergartener because I do agree it's a lot for a new reader.

Have you heard of Alpha-Phonics? It uses magnetic tiles of letters and pictures. My daughter is a kinesthetic learner and she was super excited and ready to do every lesson. There are 2 levels, it's affordable. It's good for reinforcement of other curriculums. The teachers guide is very minimal, it just gives you ideas on spelling games.

I have so far really enjoyed the curriculum as I feel it is not too rushed but I have not looked at the younger, lower levels yet and I will be having a kid in a few years that will need that. I looked into AAR as well, then happened upon True North Reading which is fairly new (as a widely available program). It is very thorough in auditory discrimination, visual discrimination, etc and a nice pace. So far we've really enjoyed it and I love that it's printable games, hands on, and not crazy priced!

I am a momma of 4 and have been homeschooling my oldest since she was 2. I have a 6,5,3 and 1 y/o. I like to make my own curriculum and have been doing it in the past. I taught my 2 oldest girls to read and both started reading at 3. This year, I'd like to test out some curriculum out there and see how my kids like them. I'd like to take advantage of the TGTB free course download so I went ahead and did the placement test to see what level my 2 oldest girls would be. Both aced level 1, but struggled a bit on level 3. So my 6 and 5 year old will both be starting on level 2 in a week or 2. Yay! Let's hope they like them! If not, at least my only cost was ink, paper, laminating sheets, electricity, and my oodles of my time organizing our lessons for the year! :D

Thank you for this video. This video actually makes me feel much better about ditching what we had been using (Logic of English) and switching TO The Good and the Beautiful (Don't you love how individual homeschooling is?). My son gets bored with just focusing on only reading, so throwing in little lessons about other things helps him stay engaged. He also gets super bogged down by a bunch of manipulatives with reading lessons. I especially appreciate your comments about giving yourself permission to set aside a curriculum you love and switch to something else based on what is or is not working for you child.
