When close family died I moved here with 2 children, 1 dog, 1 cat, a caravan, a Land Rover and a shipping container of tools etc. I built my own house, single-handed! established a smallholding and met a wonderful woman that is now my wife. Happy days!

I just discovered your videos and I'm hooked. You're such an inspiration. I'm a single mum living in a council house in England with my two home-educated daughters. I can't move, but I do have quite a large garden and I'm in the process of becoming as self-sufficient as I possibly can with the space and time I have. I've converted most of my garden to no-dig beds and am trying to grow as much food as I can. I'm learning so much from watching your videos. They're wonderful. Maybe one day when my kids are grown I'll be able to move, but I'm starting from where I am, and watching your videos is truly inspiring me. 😊

I’m living now, with the same principles. No rush, my own pace, no attachment to or pursuit of any status. I live an extremely modest existence but at least I’m not making myself ill anymore with stress. It’s really not worth it. I honestly believe that if everyone in the world had a couple of acres and a very modest , needs based income only , the divide between haves and have nots, wars and mental illness would greatly subside. Of course, there’s need to be zero corruption which is always a problem.

Everything is harder work and if you don't mind that it's great. Self sufficiency is a lifestyle choice like farming. You are out in all winds and weathers and mostly doing it for yourself. I'm in my 60s and today I covered a shed roof, cleaned the chickens and then painted some of the inside of my garden room. Every day I'm doing something, mostly for hours on end. Still got cementing of steps and more painting lined up this week. In the summer it's hours and hours of gardening.

Light Warrior - Hi! I am 66 and I live in a cave house in the south of Spain. I also have a small garden to care for. I found all this easy until I became ill with COPD. This has made self-sufficiency very hard work. I do still manage but I'm just warning people that this lifestyle can be ruined by illness.

you cannot, and should not, escape society. society is wonderful, you just have to make your own way in it. society is what happens when people work with each other, it is not some ethereal demon which needs to be avoided, even though aspects of it are absolutely heinous, we are contributing to society right now by talking about it, you can't improve society by being absent from it, you live by example and help others achieve their goals.

My husband and I moved into an old farm house over ten years ago and had to live in it while restoring and repairing. For a while, there was no running water or electricity. We still have so much to do, but it was so much more than only repairing the house. Building gardens, clearing overgrown brush, patching outbuildings, repairing a well, restocking a pond. The first few years were just repairing wiring and plumbing. We never stop working and have accomplished a lot, but it is well worth it.

I envy your life style, I'd have loved to have retired to Sligo my Dads home town . But I make do with enjoying Corby & its surroundings. I wished I could be as minimalist. I'm riding myself of stuff stuff stuff. My small 2 bed home has acquired too much in 20 years. Donating recycling is a goal. Thank you for inspirational film . Hey! Great video as always. I wanted to share here that you don't need to really do what you did - live in the countryside and living a self-sustaining lifestyle. I noticed for myself that I was not so long ago in a rut and thought to myself, I want to do this but it is too much of a change. Instead, I bought a really cheap house, still somewhat near a major city and it has all the common benefits of a somewhat modern home, but I can also grow my own veggies in the garden. For me this is a great step towards "quitting the rat race" because the house is very cheap and in around 8 to 10 years time (maye sooner) I will have payed off the mortgage on it. I guess you could say I'm trying to live a somewhat more frugal lifestyle (some may be familiar with the FIRE movement), it touches on your way of living in some degree so felt like sharing it here. All the best!

Yes, gardening requires a lot of tools/equipment, especially: spade, fork, hoe, watering can, wheelbarrow, pruning saw, secateurs, pots, raised bed materials, etc. And handywork requires tools/equipment like: saw, hammer, power tools, nails, screws, etc. I used to live in the country, but the bushfires came through and destroyed everything. I'm getting ever closer now to a crossroads in my career vs dreams pursuit, and I am so glad to have found your brilliant mind and videos to help guide my decision making. Already started my veggie plot here in Co. Wicklow alongside maintaining a full-time hospital based dietitian role, and am feeling more alive in that plot than ever before in my adult life (reminiscent of my country-life childhood adventures). Sorry for the long-winded comment, but I guess I just hoped to say thank you. I hope to one day cross paths with you and your farm! Thanks again, Didi 😊

As a 70yo widely traveled person (plus lived in 4 countries for significant times) I´d say THE most common negative attitude of people these days is the point you made..... people focus on reaching some end point and almost miss out on the enormous potential pleasure/value/satisfaction/purpose of the journey of life itself ! My respect and good wishes to you.

You're so inspirational! I'm impressed with how much you manage to do and I definitely like what you said about letting time be your friend rather than enemy! I'm always having this internal debate about how and when to pursue my dreams (which will start with travelling to explore, volunteer, and understand which dreams I want). I've found a way out of the rat race but now am facing some trepidation at my freedom and wondering if I need to prepare more financially first (but suspect it could be harder to break free a second time and this could anyway just be procrastination and waiting for "permission"!)...so thank you for sharing your philosophy and actions.

You will never die from a lack of knowledge. I think what you have accomplished is amazing. When I was your age, there was a big "back to the land" movement as well which led to those innovations in solar panels and wind and battery power. I think your generation will do it better.

You know we’re all peeking at the cottage behind you trying to see new developments? No pressure- just such a beautiful cottage- You’ve done well on your property - everything and everyone looks so healthy, happy & loved. As soon as you walked onto that property, you became a “hippie” hahahahaha! Happy Christmas!

Thanks for the reminders ,the video has really helped me to refocus, we moved to Leitrim from the uk with the same thinking with our son ( nearly 18) now questions why we don't chase a career ect and time as you say is the most important commodity we have, it's hard to explain that to someone who now craves a life in the rat race.

My wife and I plus our young daughter did the same , about 2 plus years ago. Best move we ever made. We have a habitable fixer upper cottage and 1.5 acres in Tipperary . I am curious as to where you are. What county. We are not self reliant yet but hope to be in a year or two. Already the stress has just melted away. I subscribed today having just found your channel and enjoyed your presentation.

I'm in envy of your green pastures, sunshine, and open coat.... We have a foot a snow and are solidly into permifrost season. Everything's cold and asleep. Glad you and yours are not! Also, as a first-time home owner who renovated a house left for destruction, I can perfectly attest to the need for every tool under the sun. Just two days ago I sang my father's praises for giving me a socket set years ago, allowing me to service my snowblower. As much as I want nothing, I find I need - NEED - certain things, and probably more of them than I'd like.

I am guilty of having a house before my garden.. But it is one good reason for that. That is the building permits and regulations in my municipality. To be able to develop the land, I had to have an approved water source, (in my case a well) and a sewage system. Then I got the building permit which is for 2 years, can be extended to 3 years. I would not have been allowed to live in temporary accommodation like trailers or a shed, only during the building period. I work fulltime unfortunately, but I am looking forward to the spring to develop my garden further. You are living the dream. That cottage will be so wonderful, guess I´m more anxious than you seeing it finished and ready to move into! Merry Christmas to you and your furry friends, from Norway.
