A rock rundown is an erosion-control structure in which the face of a headcut has been stabilized and then covered with a single layer of rock mulch. This video provides further information on the function and purpose of rock rundowns, and walks you through building a rock rundown step by step, with visual cues.
The videos in this series serve as visual companions to the Erosion Control Field Guide from Craig Sponholtz, Avery C. Anderson Sponholtz, and Watershed Artisans.

3 years have passed. can we get an update on this to see if this erosion-control structure works?

Just imagine if someone a few (centuries?) (millennia?) ago built a few of these on the Upper Colorado River! No Grand Canyon!!! 😇 Excellent video!

Thank you for sharing these techniques! Very good videos, concise and to the point. It might be nice to have a little of the theory behind too! I wondered why you dont take advantage of the structure and build up a little higher at the top to trap a bit more sediment? Thank you!

He explains that in the video. If you allow the rock at the top of the head cut to project above the incoming channel invert, you will reduce the velocity allowing some reduction in the sediment load, but create a greater risk of having the flow deflect around the stone and start to erode the sides of the channel.
