This had me confused for a while, but the most important thing is what they don't say in this movie: in that an ext. combusion engine is a HEAT ENGINE. it's not "any" energy that's applied to the working flued, but heat energy. - rocket: uses volume increase of combustion (= internal combustion) - nuke plant: uses volume increase of heat (= external "combustion". Not combustion but the peeps who named it were to laisy to update the name) - hydro-power: uses movement of of falling/running water (gravity) - battery: chemical energy The last two are neither internal nor external combusion engines. Likewise, If you take a nuke plant, and instead of heating the water to steam, you use a battery to convert water to hydrogen gas (so, exact same principle, but use electricity instead of heat), it's no longer a heat engine.and thus not a ext. combust engine.

No answer is correct for the combustion question because combustion requires a fuel and an *oxidizer*. Nuclear does not oxidize, but fissions (or some day, fusions) an atom that becomes two or more atoms plus a few neutrons, some gamma rays, and some neutrinos. So that answer for the final question are all wrong. So, while yes, the fuel does act on the working fluid, it is not doing it through combustion.

I disagree with the answer to the final questions. There is no 'combustion' in a nuclear reaction.
@ghuegel10 жыл бұрын
You're totally right. The nuclear power plant is analogous to an external combustion engine in that the nuclear reaction is used to heat water to drive turbines, but combustion is a chemical process, not a nuclear one.
@gephc410 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I thought! If splitting atoms counts as combustion, so does water falling down a hill. This one was a tie. :)
@AlexanderPavel10 жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with chemical combustion though. Listen to the definitions again. A combustion engine uses a fluid to do work and doesn't necessarily need a chemical combustion.
@jahlaydominguez576110 жыл бұрын
The definition of an 'external combustion' engine as said at 8:53 - energy is applied to the working fluid from some outside force. Even though combustion is in the name, it does not have to have 'combustion' to be an external combustion engine by this definition, so nuclear power plants do in fact use an external combustion engine.
@jahlaydominguez576110 жыл бұрын
Geph C Its true that the water is a working fluid in a hydroelectric dam, but since humans are not actively putting energy into the fluid (except by building and maintaining the dam, which doesn't count) it can not be an external combustion engine.

SciShow, you should do a segment on human hearing and how it relates to the audio engineering terms Peak and RMS levels, and then go ahead and make use of them correctly in your videos. I didn't know Nuclear power plants use combustion... I always thought it was radioactive decay. None of the above was the best answer
@devins745710 жыл бұрын
They use the decay to heat water that produces steam that turns turbines that creates energy that powers stuff...
@Mc_Vomit10 жыл бұрын
External vs internal combustion has nothing to do with an actual combustion reaction. As they said in the video, it's about whether the fuel is also the fluid that's doing work. Internal, energy comes from the working fluid. External, energy comes for some external source to the working fluid. So for an SFR, the fuel is being pushed out of the rocket and doing the work. In a hydroelectric dam, the water is the "fuel" and is also doing the work. In a fuel cell, the fuel is again doing the work and producing the energy. However, in a nuclear power plant, the fuel is not the fluid doing the work. The fuel is radioactive material, but it gives it's energy(from decay) to steam, which is the fluid doing the work. The key hint to the question was the example of a steam engine, since a nuclear power plant uses steam to spin its turbines.

Stephen Rose I think you miss heard the question. The question was "Which of these devices uses external combustion?" You're correct that nuclear power does not use internal combustion, it uses external which is why it was the correct answer.

+Jahlay Dominguez Sure, *if* that were the definition, you'd be right. But it's so not -- wikipedia, and every other source I've looked at, says that an external combustion engine must involve combustion, defined as burning fuel with an oxidiser.
