The worst part of depression is feeling like it’s the reality and the times you were happy were the mental illness. People who say, “Get over it,” or “snap out of it,” are wild to me. Oh, thanks, dude, why didn’t I think of that? I remember being 19 and a nurse asked me if I was on any medication. I told him my antidepressant and he said, “You’re so young! What do you have to be depressed about?” (Which in itself is stupid. Being in your late teens is a terrible time, but never mind.) After my first s-- attempt, my pediatrician asked my mother if my boyfriend broke up with me and that’s why I did it. Wasn’t dating anyone, Doc, but thanks for that. Actually, what happened was that I realized I had a choice. I could either live several more decades hurting and disappointing everyone, or I could hurt everyone just once right now by ending it. Seemed perfectly logical at the time. Decades later, there are plenty of days when it still does. Somehow, South Park managed to portray that feeling accurately and still make it hilarious.

I understand that stan was depressed in like both of these episodes, and, as someone with diagnosed clinical depression, depression sucks. But it sucks for both the person dealing with it and the people around them. I dont think anyone was in the wrong in this episode, definitely not Stan because he couldn’t control what he was feeling, how he was acting and his depression all together. But you also cant blame kyle either. Maybe im biased because he’s definitely my favorite character, but it pisses me off when people attack, mischaracterize and hate kyles character all together because of this episode. Kyle is such an empathetic character, he has very high moral standards, and sure he can be an asshole most of the time and isn’t afraid to fight but overall towards the people he cares about, hes a sweetheart, he tried helping stan through his depression and tried to put up with it, but sometimes you have to know your limits and put yourself first. Kyle had to put himself first and distance himself from Stan because as he said in the episode, Stan sucked the life out of him. Being mentally unwell sucks, i know it does, but u have to acknowledge that it sucks for the people around u too. If Kyle stayed and tried to help Stan, Stan would only bring him down with him. Maybe Kyle did leave him, and thats shitty ill admit, but the situation would’ve been bad either way. Theres really no good outcome between putting ur friend first, trying to fix them when they don’t even want ur help, and that leading to ur mental health getting worse as well, or putting urself first and leaving one of ur best friends. It sucks, i know it does but u can’t help someone that doesn’t want ur help. It wont work out good in the end.

Love ur reactions either way though! This is just my perspective of the episodes. Keep it up!

As someone that has put up with someone’s negativity every day for 5 years til I just had to quit, I genuinely do understand Kyle. He was abit of a dick about it, yeah, but when you try to help someone and it’s not helping, you either are dragged down by there negativity by trying not to be a dick, or be a dick by saying “listen, I tried to help, but you obviously don’t want to or will let me to, so I have to leave”. It’s not an easy choice, and you should be there for them as long as possible, but there really is a point where you can’t do it anymore. Ofc Kyle isn’t as mature about it, but as someone who has been to the point of Stan (addicted to pills) it’s hard to be around that person and help them when they refuse it. This was such a good episode on this subject from both sides.

34:40 I appreciate you pointing this out cause most of the time cartoons have a character learn a lesson and we're meant to believe they internalize it perfectly from then on. But the reality is it takes work and time to adopt a new mindset, even if you know conceptually it's the mindset you should adopt. Thinking about it is easy, adapting to it is hard. And people complain about cartoons where a character has to learn a lesson more than once, but I actually like those shows cause it's realistic.

I got Aspergers one they don't like us using it anymore it means high functioning autistic wich pisses off parents of non high functioning, and from a nazi who created the term. And no were born with it we just get diagnosed later in life because especially back then high functioning is stupid hard for them to see as real. Like I didn't know what was wrong with me till 38 I was test 3 times as a kid and told "you are too smart to be here, tell your teacher to stop wasting my time" who had me tested for disabilities by the special ed teacher in the late 90s. And that is a thing I do stuff off more of logic then insticts like normal people so yeah I get shit on for it. Because I am pessimistic at time, but its annoying autisitcs are portrayed as all these things but the DEPRESSION stuff is side effect of us being treated like shit, and told to be "normal" like that is why I was emmo as fuck because my brain doesn't think "normal" its wired different and for 38 years I had to pretend to be something I wasn't to fit in. Or be called weird or worse.

Is aspergers similar to how the episode portray it as? Everything that is essentially made for a simple laugh, fun and chill, people with aspergers look at and go "ugh, that sucks"? Because I think South Park is right. I think it's just common depression and life that you have to deal with. Then once you start taking psychotropic drugs to deal with these problems, you're only making it worse by rewiring your brain with poison. I believe that most of these "new age" diagnosis that didn't exist 50 years ago are all bogus. But very lucrative for big pharma.

Even if he feels horrible, he still could have held his tongue. It doesn't fall to Kyle to solve Stan's problems, he isn't his therapist. Kyle and Eric are very friendly in this and previous episode, no hating on either side.
