ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
An excerpt from JazzLand, the mythical TV show by Lucien Malson and Jean-Christophe Averty, this recording of Erroll Garner is worth its weight in surprises. Broadcast in 1973, the program begins with an interview with Frank Ténot, during which the American pianist evokes his gift for music with humility (Erroll Garner didn’t read music theory), his taste for great jazz ensembles and his studio work techniques.
A real pièce de résistance, the half-hour concert reveals a composer at the top of his art. The two versions of ""Misty"" are unanimously appreciated, all the more so since the track was also the main theme of Play Misty For Me, a film directed two years earlier by Clint Eastwood. Other highlights, the ""Afinidad"" and ""All The Things You Are"" unveil the sophisticated playing of the Pittsburgh native. Finally, the cover of the Beatles' famous ""Something"" imposes a devilishly elegant touch on proceedings. An interpretation to be placed on the same level as the re-arrangements by Shirley Bassey and Ella Fitzgerald.

Imagine , you never took lessons, can't read music. But, anything that you hear or can conjure goes directly into that keyboard. Imagine if everything you played was jubilant, or romantic and millions of people who "don't like Jazz" adored you. Then you'd be one Genius in a hundred years.

Fabulous how Erroll and probably his best bassist Ernest McCarthy (and the other great sidemen) so strongly live the music they play)

In my late teens I discovered my old man's jazz records. There were three I nearly wore out. One was Jimmy Witherspoon live at The Renaissance, with Gerry Mulligan and Ben Webster. Another was 'The Bosses' ; The Count Basie trio with Big Joe Turner, recorded in '73. The third one was Erroll Garner 'Concert By The Sea'. Amazing stuff, a bit like jazz-Rachmaninov.

Erroll Garner is one of my favorite jazz pianists alongside Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Sun Ra, Ahmad Jamal, and Thelonious Monk. Many others too, ofc. So much great music left for us by these giants of men, even when they were walking it must have leaned with a swing! Erroll had a great gift and I take much inspiration from him in my own music, even though our sounds are very different (and of course, I'm not as good as him yet, not that it's a competition.) I hope one day that my music can touch people's hearts and make them laugh and weep and smile and gnash their teeth and feel confused by what is going on while having this questioning lead them to clarity with what they want from music. One can dream, and I feel like dreaming helps me learn to play better instead of seeing these feats as unachievable and other-worldly. Thank you so much for posting this, it's among the best Garner recordings I've heard.

Erroll played the impossible. It's as simple as that. As a (jazz) pianist he was without equal.

Just found out that it's actually one of Erroll Garner's originals called "Afinidad" and is a rather rare live version of this tune.
