News Chopper Gets Distracted, Crashes on Live TV | Last Moments

While following a police chase, the Channel 15 news helicopter pilot seemingly got distracted by the drama on the ground, and paid for it with his life.
"On July 27, 2007, two AS-350 AStar helicopters from television stations KNXV-TV and KTVK collided in mid-air over Phoenix, Arizona, while covering a police pursuit. On board the two aircraft were four people in total - pilot Craig Smith and photographer Rick Krolak from KNXV-TV, and pilot Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox from KTVK - all of whom were killed, while no casualties were reported on the ground."

They shouldn't, especially helicopter pilots. It takes an insane amount of concentration and skill to handle a helicopter smoothly, especially in close quarters with other aircraft. Even experienced pilots would still need to be fully aware of everything going on around them, and flying around in such close quarters is already dangerous at best. At bare minimum, there should have been a pilot, someone in charge of cameras, a reporter for commentary (if they insisted on having live commentary from the helicopter), and, if possible, a co-pilot to handle communications and keep an eye on the aircraft systems. Whoever decided that there should only be two people on board clearly had no idea how much skill and concentration it takes to fly a helicopter.

I mean... if it's a low traffic area and you're going by what the control tower is giving you, not visual flight, flying actually requires less attention than driving- depending on the aircraft in question, of course. However this case? It's absolutely insane. Helicopters already require a lot more active input and a news helicopter pilot already has to worry about helping the cameraman get a good angle on things. And having all that additional work on top, commentating, communicating with the newsroom, listening to all those other frequencies... that's just crazy.

Sadly, this is how most crucial regulations come into place. Not because someone with forethought said "Hey this doesn't make sense, we should correct this issue!", but because some form of gruesome accident that forced the hands of those who make the rules. In many country you can talk to your phone with a handsfree kit. Op said texting which is radically different and not unlike what happened with those pilots. You could switch it with "reading a book while driving" or "watching a movie while driving" the idea is the same.

This is VFR. They are responsible for their own separation. Really falls on the pilots for accepting the dangerous job and partly on the news stations for expecting pilots to fly and report

Even flying VFR we have rules on separation, so it did surprise me seeing these guys so close together all at the same altitude. When it comes to TCAS, such a system would have been going off nonstop in this situation, so I’m certain that it’s something that was unused on these helicopters, either by design or by choice. This video shows just how close the one filming the two that crashed also was and within that distance any TCAS system would be screaming at one guy to claim and another to descend. I’m not a helo pilot so I can’t say much for what they have onboard, but I had always thought the pilot and copilot would have been the ones flying with one or the other controlling the camera, whilst a reporter sat in the back reporting. I find it hard to understand how the FAA permitted this kind of setup on news helicopters, but again, I’m no helo pilot and I’m not from the US.

It's not really common practice. In Los Angeles many of the helicopter photographers are also reporters, but they are not the pilots. Stu Mundel is the photographer/reporter for FOX 11's Sky Fox chopper. He's a legend up there. But he does not pilot the aircraft.

Before automated traffic counting... there used to be solo traffic reporters who flew over cities every morning reporting on traffic jams. Both in helicopters and planes. It can be done... but the priority should be flying the aircraft... and that includes constantly looking for other air traffic in visual conditions. This guy failed in that basic task.

My friend invites me for a flight every now and then. He has over two decades of experience and even then he tells me to shut up at times so he can focus. Then we resume conversation and looking at nature/nearby cities. I can't even imagine flying distracted in his plane, let alone flying in a damn helicopter like that. I feel so bad because he's developing glaucoma (due to eye pressure) and is slowly losing sight. We are 30 years apart and I hope he can fly beyond times to come after retirement.

They did actually crash very frequently, but usually it was due to improper maintenance and just a single vehicle incident that rarely resulted in deaths.... theres dozens of videos of news choppers doing emergency landings and auto gyrating down and ive seen a couple that have collided with structures

Thankfully some better practices came out of this tragedy, like a copilot freeing the pilot from reporting, and helicopter sharing with separate commentary at each news room. The latter makes perfect sense in terms of safety and lower cost of operations. Also, using small drones instead of helicopters may be safer too.

He said helicopters are inherently dangerous and that NO ONE should be using them for leisure, only when necessary. Daniel Clark, who was in one of the other news helicopters working during the crash and witnessed the horrific event (unsure if it's his voice describing the immediate aftermath), sadly took his life in October 2022 after years of struggling to deal with seeing 4 of his friends die. He's featured in one of the 10 year anniversary news vids and you can see he's still absolutely devastated. Surviving this near miss was by no means a 'prize.' I cannot imagine the agony of living with this pain for years. RIP Mr. Clark, I hope you are at peace now.

Others find profit motive in avoiding liabilities - realizing that more money spent on staff and equipment can save a lot in fines and lawsuits. Ridiculously dangerous workplaces exist for sure, but I've also seen quite a few bosses panic when they see sketchy work practices because of what it could cost them.

As a Phoenician born and raised I remember when this happened. Ultimately the local stations agreed that they would share the feed amongst each other to avoid a similar disaster in the future. Considering this happened over downtown Phoenix it was a miracle more lives weren't lost. To this day there is a memorial in the park that the helos crashed in.

Former military pilot here. When a zone goes hot and a ROZ gets put up, we have a system to coordinate aircraft’s positions without having a traditional aircraft controller. It’s not a computer system either - it’s coordination with radios and having a designated aircraft to play as a “controller” to keep aircraft separated as we attack a target. This system has been around since the 90’s maybe longer.

It seems totally bizarre that as recently as '07 it was deemed ok for a pilot to fly whilst simultaneously holding multiple conversations and watching action on the ground as well as the airspace around them; even though it was already widely known that phone use whilst driving a road vehicle increased risk. This is why regulation exists and why civil lawsuits for such srs injuries and deaths exist I hope that the four news workers who lost their lives did in the end get some justice here; and their family were able to win wrongful death lawsuits against the news agencies who thru their reckless negligence in the furtherance of small differences in profits/views Its so clearly cut and dry to me that the two news agencies (all of them rly, but these two are the ones that matter for civil suits) thru their choices of policies and procedures put their employees lives at risks, every day. This was just the day that their policies finally inevitably caused deaths to occur They no doubt tried to blame the pilots, but this is how literally all the pilots were doin things and its easy to prove that such practices were not just routinely done by all the pilots, but were also dangerously unsafe and recklessly endangered the lives of these workers. When company policies encourage unsafe practices; the company can and is often held accountable for any resultin catastrophes caused by their policies. This is why pizza places stopped advertisin hvily as havin super fast delivery; and have all srsly revised driver policies to make clear that the driver must obey all traffic laws. Drivers arent even given competition rewards for fastest deliveries anymore either, bcuz such incentives encouraged the brkin of traffic laws to achieve them. Like, imagine a racin game where you had to obey the traffic laws; the best race times wud end up bein very very similar, if not the same, in no short order. Bcuz you cant exactly get 30 miles any faster at 30mph than an hr; unless you brk either traffic laws or laws of physics. So since it was too easy for workers and their families to win civil suits for dmgs, either as a result of srs injury or wrongful death; the companies changed policy to stop losin money there, as the dmgs ended up nearin enuf, to cut into the profits gained by such unsafe practices, to matter to the bottom line No doubt the real reason news agencies changed policy after this was based solely on such legal logic only based reasonin; not out of a desire to not cause more death... just a desire to not lose money, and them realisin that a cheaper option existed which wud work just fine. Bcuz companies dont just change unsafe practices for the sake of protectin workers; they only ever do it cause it affects their bottom line

As a former pilot (fixed wing) it amazes me that the work load placed on this pilots and crews was ever allowed in the first place! It was a miracle that they came down in the Steel Indian Park. Extremely congested area around the park anf they could have been many more fatalities anf injuries. Breaks my heart still seeing these. I remember hearing when this happened. It was horrifying, and then when it came out that there was a third that captured the crash....I remember that the news station in Reno held a moment of remembrance for their fallen comrades in Phoenix. I remember someone at KNLV saying on air that, "When something this tragic happens to one news station, then all news stations feel it and mourn. No matter where we are, what state we report from, we are all one family. And tonight, we are in mourning for the families of the four killed from Channel 5 and Channel 3 out of Phoenix."

It looks surreal, I mean, just like you would see in the movies. The crash on the ground looked like a staged explosion. It was life imitating art. Very tragic. They should have known the dangers of having a distracted pilot. The pilot's sole mission is to fly the chopper. I didn't know they provided running commentary. I always assumed it was the guy with the camera. It didn't need to happen. The affected families should sue the news channel for requiring the pilot to take on tasks other than flying the chopper. It just seems like common sense.

this was not a tragedy ... it was a spectacle a la George Carlin. The definition of a tragedy is when something worse happens from trying to help; like a rescue helicopter crashes into a day school after picking up a stranded skier killing everyone on board, nurses, paramedics, pilot, the rescued person and 10 people on the ground. That would be a tragedy. This was reporters vying for coverage to make money for a "News Network" during late stage capitalism.

Hearing the other news achors' reactions to the crash was one of the hardest parts of this video I think. My heart goes out to them, even if this was years ago, to have to watch and realize you just watched your coworkers and friends die, and knowing a large portion of people in the city are listening to your reaction in that moment. I hope they all got the support and therapy they needed after this.

I work in the fire and life safety industry, and new safety measures never come from forethought. They always come from tragedy. However, recently, we had to work on some devices that needed adjustments, and a coworker just wanted to put up a 15' ladder to reach them. These devices were in an atrium, above a very narrow catwalk, above a 40' drop. I pulled him aside and said, we shouldn't do this. It took 3 months to have the proper scaffolding erected (red tape and money) but we performed the job without incident.

Yep, legislation has always been reactive rather than proactive. I teach health and safety as part of being a lecturer in mechanical engineering. When researching the subject i find stories which can all be bliled down to "lack of common sense lead to death, and then they changed the law to prevent it in future." Even with that knowledge, this video still baffles me how anyone thought this would be ok.

Typically I agree with this, but it's just not the case here; Everyone knows that forcing someone to multitask is already a bad idea, that point only multiplies substantially whenever you have them multitask while doing something dangerous. When I was ten I could've told you it was damn near malicious to have someone try to pilot a helicopter while also trying to closely follow an unfolding story on the ground, and I'm sure the same can be said for everyone else viewing this video.

Absolutely terrifying and I think we can all relate to being distracted while walking or riding a bike or anything for that matter and you have that split second "oh crap!" as you have a near miss or minor, but preventable collision. It just to me is not hard to imagine the terror, that shock of adrenaline like fire ripping through your body in that split second before collision. This is so tragic, rest in peace.

You can get the same problems on the ground , with that many distractions . They should either pilot , or just report . Nobody should be expected to do both . My condolences to the families of those souls lost . That was truly horrific , & avoidable .

I'm really surprised the pilot is expected to report. Would make more sense for the pilot to focus on flying (as well as communicating with ATC and other aircraft) while the camera operator - who is focused entirely on the screen anyway - does the reporting and communication with the station. The pilot at most should keep loose attention on the target to make sure to follow it, or the camera operator tells them where to fly. Camera operator focus on what's going on on the ground, pilot on what's going on in the air.

I was in school only a few miles away when this happened. It was a tragedy of course but really lucky that they crashed above the park. The park is huge and the area all around it is pretty densely populated. This crash could’ve been much worse. The park itself wasn’t even damaged much. It’s a somber feeling to go the park and see the memorial signs placed where the crash took place. May they rest in peace.

I used to live in PHX, about 2 short blocks from that spot. It is utterly incredible that this happened over the Indian school property. That vast property, now a "park", is a half-mile x half-mile mostly-undeveloped lot There is no uninhabited space like that anywhere else downtown. None. The property is surrounded by several high-rise buildings and lots of residential neighborhoods. We are very lucky this happened where it did.

They didn't land on a residential area but narrowly missed Central Ave which is one of the heaviest traveled roads in Phoenix. Born and raised there but left long before this happened.

somebody commented about that one of the other chopper pilots who saw it committed suicide later on. Presumably he was not flying when he did so. So there really was at least ONE "death on the ground" if you want to think of it that way

The Channel 5 copter sounded absolutely devastated at the crash sight. All i felt was pure empathy and sadness toward the situation and I'd be lying if I'd say my reaction would be much far off from that pilot. It hurt to even just watch this. I can't imagine what it'd feel like to witness this in person let alone if they knew each other
