In our previous video, we learnt about What is spinal cancer and what are causes of spinal cancer. In today's video, Dr Chetan Anchan( (orthopaedic oncologist ) we will know about how to diagnose spinal cancer and the treatment for spinal cancer.
When a tumour is found anywhere in the spine, the first step is usually to determine whether it is a primary or a metastatic tumour. Your doctor will likely order a variety of tests to check your spine, as well as other major organs and systems where cancer may develop. These tests and other diagnostic methods may include:
-X-rays
-MRI and CT scan
-Positron emission tomography (PET scan)
Once we get to understand the problem the patient has to undergo a biopsy in which the doctor check what kind of tumour is this or what type of tumour is it. Whether it is spread due to cancer which was or is already present in the body. Therefore a biopsy may be necessary to confirm the exact type of tumour, especially if it is a primary tumour.
Treatment for spinal cancer and spinal tumours will differ based on the tumour type, aggressiveness and many other factors. Your treatment options may include:
Chemotherapy
Radiation therapy,
Full or partial surgical removal of the tumour
Once the tests are done doctor check whether the patient will require surgery or not. Surgery is performed in very selective cases.
Primary Modality Of Treatment :
When cancer is caused due to another type of cancer in the body, then the treatment is given based on primary cancer. Surgery is only performed when this tumour has damaged the spinal cord to a great extent and the compression on the spinal cord has resulted in paralysis or loss of sensation. There are two reasons while spinal surgery is performed
1. Pain & Spinal Instability
2. Spinal Compression - for which the doctors perform laminectomy and cord decompression
After the surgery, the patient needs to undergo chemotherapy and radiation.
We will know about spinal cancer in our next video.
