First story: I 100% agree that it was justified to call the police, especially given that she was thoroughly warned, and she was leaving texts on read, plus if it rings twice and goes to voicemail, that means they saw it was ringing, saw who it was, and declined the call. This woman was actively choosing to ignore the person watching her children, and regardless of if she's late in coming home, that's a safety hazard.

There's the added layer of the fact that if she hadn't called the cops like friend said and just refused to sit for her again, she would have 1000% just done it to someone else. That was legit the only way to correct the mom's behavior.

@@dupee5223 Exactly, especially since she had been shown to be CONSISTENTLY hours late before this point, and OP was MORE than generous with warning her. And I keep harping on this, but it's sticking in my brain, she did READ the messages, and left OP on read. She KNEW what she was being warned about, chose to ignore it, and then was pissed when it wasn't an empty threat

on the flipside, the mom could have been in serious trouble. Maybe she's been kidnapped and the kidnappers are just too dumb to turn off her phone. Maybe she's fallen and keeps trying to pick up and failing. You kind of HAVE to assume something like this when your babysitter keeps calling you and you don't pick up. I mean, what mother just willingly ignores their children potentially being in real trouble? This one, apparently. Hopefully she never sees her kids again.

I went to college and had a group of friends, there was one guy who kinda came along as a package with a great guy. He was weird, he was annoying, but he was okish. But he smelled all the time, he didn’t wear deodorant, we noticed discolouration on his shirts and realised he didn’t wash them often, he was literally taking it off, leaving hung up to dry and putting it back on with no deodorant. Then we noticed he was also smelling of poop, we only just noticed cos the smell had been growing. He also itched his butt against the edge of chairs & corners of tables... We as a group decided we needed to speak to him, apparently his original friend had tried and said he wouldn’t gossip about him, but we would find he had “reasons” So we had an intervention of sorts... turned out he didn’t shower daily, just every Sunday and it was a very fast shower. Basically he stepped in, got wet & stepped out. no soap, no products, no actual washing, he’d get a longer shower if it rained! He also did not wipe his arse! It seemed his family were SUPER religious, his parents taught him wiping his arse was “gay” it was not necessary, it was just “playing with it for pleasure”. He showered quickly and whilst wearing underpants because it was “gay” to see & touch your privates (he sat down to pee, yeah someone said if you can’t touch it, how do you pee?) After the shower he put the wets underwear on the radiator to dry and put on the pair he had “washed” the following Sunday. Apparently the scratching was because his arse itches like crazy, we had to literally educate him about swamp ass... and advise him to see medical help because his butt bleeds and “gets sore”turned out he had abscesses and sores between the cheeks and on his starfish! We also found out that he’d been taught personal care products were ALL unnecessary and would... guy guessed it... make him gay! We got the school to get him into therapy and counselling. With the counselling and being away from home, he changed completely. By the time he next visited home his parents disowned him for turning gay and disgusting them and god. But he came back and said he didn’t care, because now he didn’t stink he realised how much his family & their home did. So he reported the family to Social Services (that’s the CPS here) to get his sisters help. He’s a very well adjusted family man these days, he has a wife, couple of nibblets and after college he went to work in Counselling & Therapy, focussing mainly on religious de-programming for kids abused by religious parents. He also smells great and is still not showing any signs of the soap turning him gay... better still, when one of our group came out, he was the one in there with the first and biggest hug, because now he knows gay is not the worst thing a person can be... his parents took that crown!

Thank you all for recognizing the friend needed help, not rejection. Your focus on kindness and lifting him with access to proper resources literally changed his life, hopefully his sister's lives, and the lives of every person he cpunsels. @@johanaklaudyova8764 sadly it's not... He occasionally tells us stories worse than his own... He obviously never gives any details, but he'll tell us about the literal crimes these religious nutbags commit. Normally he doesn't even say the gender of a patient, but this one story it was obvious... Person when starting their period, was beaten for "copulating with satan & his demons" After this her father would "check" their underwear and each month they were put in their room, made kneel against a wall & pray nonstop. The father would sit watching from the doorway & he whipped her if she stopped praying... Out loud. At first she was allowed bathroom breaks, but then he accused them of speaking to satan in the bathroom. So he bought a kiddy pool & they knealt in that and bathroom needs had to just happen in situ. These parents were big in their church & popular. Their kids looked perfect to the outside world. Patient later found her mother would be literally whipped for "being Satan's ho" when her period came each month, but she had to pray & not cry out during punishment. So the mother would try to be pregnant always. So patient had 16 siblings so far. Luckily patient was looking back in therapy, they were out, but had siblings still home who were not permitted to speak their siblings name... Definitely not speak to or meet with. Sadly there's a LOT more effed up families than we even realise & many of them are perfectly normal seeming.

Wow. That's an awesome story! A bit back in my family on my mother's side, they were almost cultish. At my grandmother's house, they didn't have a TV, and just had bible readings a couple of times every day. Other than that they just sat around. They had eight kids, including my mother of course. So when all those kids started having kids of their own, they luckily softened a bit, instead of going balls to the wall. Ended up leaving their super religious church. They were still religious, but they got to have a TV, and luckily for us grandkids, it wasn't a big bore to visit them. They still had the bible readings. I went to a somewhat christian elementary school, in a christian society. You learnt you were a christian, there was no choice, you were. We said grace before eating lunch at school. (later becoming illegal 🤟 in my country unless it's a christian private school) We had classes about christianity in and out, and a few short classes on the other religions, which were communicated like there was something wrong with them, and fairytale like. All this, mixed with my mother's family made me realise at as young as seven or eight that it was all bullshit. So I like to say I was born atheist. I'm glad my grandmother softened up, because she didn't judge me for being a non believer. She grew a lot. She died during easter. I didn't visit her enough. Sorry for the essay. It's our country's independence day, and I'm drunk on a bus, going to a party.

It feels good to after a major life change like that to have your older sibling have your back. Someone older to trust and lean on. Very important when you are a teen… even beyond 18 if you ask me. You don’t turn adult overnight being an adult is an attitude thing. I didn’t feel quite 100% there yet at 18, yeah I understood my responsibilities. My dad used to get mad at me for "using too much toilet paper" when I was a kid. He tried to convince me to wipe like he does to conserve toilet paper, which consisted of wadding up about 10 squares and scraping it across your butt once, then throwing it in the toilet. He repeated this twice, then declared the job finished. Confused as to why he was able to clean better using so many squares for just one wipe, I asked him if his last wipe had poop on it. He responded "yes, of course." He never explained why he knew his butt was clean after his last wipe. Whenever the cats got into his laundry basket, my brother and I would find his shit-stained underwear scattered around the house. My mother was the exact same, I was made to care for the entire household, care for my mother and my brother because she just didn’t want to be responsible or parent, so I was neglected, psychologically abused, physically abused, and I eventually snapped, because shocker, constant abuse and forcing a child to be fully responsible for an entire household, an adult and another child, is extremely stressful. As an adult I escaped as soon as I could, and I was psychologically abused and made to feel horrible for caring about myself and putting my mental health first, so as I got older I kept contact minimal. I’d only be contacted to ask for money, to tell me I need to give my brother money (despite him being an adult male who could work and just didn’t want to), telling me I’m horrible, to make me fee guilty about things, or to just straight up steal money from me. So I cut all contact and they only ever tried contacting me to send abuse, to be homophobic, to be ableist, to be sexist, to send abuse after abuse after abuse, so I exposed them on social media and they were upset because “she’s painting herself as the victim”… when I literally was, they just refuse to acknowledge their actions and instead of recognising they abused me, they call it “drama”. Nothing of value was lost by cutting them out of my life.

These issues should've been obvious from the start, so either OP neglegted to properly introduce the two or just ignored any issues and any displeasure his gf expressed, or the gf nevet said anything and pretended to like the cat. That first mom deserves a 5 out of 5 for me. 4.5 is too lenient for someone who continuously leaves their kids for hours on end without being able to be contacted and obviously doesn't prioritize her kids or their wellbeing, so much so DFS is actively investigating. I feel like because Rslash's daughter is still in her first year of life, he didn't go as harsh as needed just because he hasn't seen how messed up this situation truly is. As a mom for almost 11 years now, I promise 5 out of 5 is deserved by this POS mom.

Agreed. OP should be paid double the hourly rate for every hour parents are late. I have a tendency to be late and have a working relationship with my sitter to ensure my habit doesn't cut into her plans. I've given her guardianship POA so she can make any decision necessary in case I cannot be reached BUT this is the agreement we have with each other. If an emergency came up on her part where she needed to part with my kids, there was an authorized on-call sitter (not necessary now since my kids are independent now) who could take them. It was needed once or twice in our 10+ year partnership but the transition was smooth even without my immediate contact and both were sufficiently compensated.

Wife is totally the asshole in this situation especially since the boy could have a chance to grow up with his brother’s family with a child close to his age. They'd sure as fuck never again be alone with anyone I loved. They'd be out the door that very night with a go bag to stay at a hotel/friend's house. Their stuff would follow in boxes. Even if you see an animal as simple property, the gf connived to steal and throw out his property and planned on pretending she didn't know what happened. That's shady as hell even if it's your favourite jacket or something; it shows what she'll do to get her way and how little your feelings matter to her. I had the same exact experience with my parents (favoritism story). Sister got college paid for until she failed out, brand new car at 16... etc I never got any of that...I never did anything to warrant that either... straight A's, didn't get in trouble etc...parents genuinely wondered why our relationship was strained.

As someone who has indoor cats, I can fully understand how that guy must have felt. I'd go ballistic, if someone would put my cats outside without proper care. Indoor cats don't know the dangers of cars, other animals/ pets and people. They'd have no familar hiding space to resort to and most likely an underdeveloped sense of orientation, due to not having to use it indoors.

*Regarding the favoritism story:* OP is not the asshole & he didn’t make his parents look bad, they made themselves look bad, they were okay treating their kid like crap behind closed doors but had an issue with it as soon as it was public knowledge, what shady people, OPs parents should be ashamed. OP you need to work hard & make something of yourself, make your parents regret how they treated you, make them regret losing you, make them realize what garbage they really are & never go back to those horrible people, you don’t need them & you’re much better than they’ll ever be, always remember that.

Last story. I know someone who married a guy who had been adopted by a single mom and apparently she hadn't taught him how to properly wipe. So he made it to his late 20s till he got married and when his wife saw how he "wiped" she nicely explained to him how to wipe properly and now he doesn't have anymore issues. So it can happen if the parents don't teach their kids correctly from a young age.

Calling the police in a situation like this is ALWAYS best. Literally walked up the stairs together. It was her show from there. I left for school.

I totally agree with you on the first story. If the babysitter can't reach the mother, it's been hours since she was supposed to come home and the babysitter doesn't know what to do, the only thing you really can do is call the police. It doesn't matter if the client is someone who you are on good terms with or someone you know is a a**hole, if the client doesn't come home to take care of the kids and is impossible to get hold of, they are either 1) missing, or 2) neglecting the kids. Both situations call for police intervention.

As a survivor of the foster care system it is important to know a few things about how the system works. The foster parents are paid by the state the money required to feed and care for the child. This amount varies based on the age of the child and the state they are in. I've seen anywhere from $200 to over $750 per month to simply care for the child. The VAST majority of foster parents foster children pretending to be looking to adopt, but in reality just take the money and give the child the absolute bare minimum necessary to survive. These horrible people do eventually get barred from fostering again, but usually it takes a while to prove neglect if the child is too traumatized to speak up(which they likely are). These parents usually don't have to pay back the money since they cannot prove it wasn't used for the child. The child gets bounced around a lot, easily to a new family every 1-2 months. Most of these families end up abusive toward the foster child. They think "nobody gives a fuck about this kid, so nobody will care if I hurt them." Many foster parents already have children of their own, and they wouldn't dare hurt their "precious angel" when they misbehave by punishing them with any form of punishment. Instead they opt to punish the kid nobody wanted when their kid decides to misbehave. An example of this for me was being shoved down the stairs by their kid and getting punished for being in their precious child's way. I was 4. So the woman in the third story who thinks throwing that boy into a system of abusive and manipulative people is the right thing to do is IMO 5/5.

Not The Favorite: I laugh at this because I see a tendency in myself to prefer one child over the other (my eldest is more competent, articulate, and shares my sense of humor more than my youngest). These parents not recognizing their favoritism of one child over the other and their actions in giving preferential treatment is bad and a trap I have to stop myself from falling into every day by reminding myself of everything I love about my youngest too (sweet, caring, funny, cuddly, and we enjoy watching the same shows eldest and hubby don't like...she's my mirror image too).
