Irrespective of change in name of Ravenshaw University, it cannot be erased from history that the British administration in India failed to curb starvation death of more than 1million people in the then Orissa district of Bengal as a result of Famine in 1866-7, mostly due to mismanagement of their inept officer T.E.Ravenshaw. According to Karl Marx, the large scale famine and starvation death was due to their policy of exporting rice to other parts including Africa and Australia. But documents in this case says rice from Odisha was transported to Bengal district. May be it was exported to other countries from there as Marx says in Capital. The excuse made for T.E.Ravenshaw , then the Commissioner of the region, that he was misinformed by the clericals about the rice and foodgrain stock, and the zamindars didn't open their stock for the public are ridiculous. Whose responsibility was it to procure the foodgrain and supply the needy? What was he doing when not 100, or 200 but much more than 1million people were dying in starvation for long two years, not for a few days? Couldn't he see the skeleton body. Was he a human? And then he gave some lollypops when the intellectuals protested.
