I believe this was the final time they ever played as a band before they split. Their reactions at the end were great. Wonderful band and a fantastic body of work.

last song they ever played live as a band if I recall correctly? yeah? EPIC. one of the best, spine tingling, meaningful, goose-bump enducing voices in the history of modern music. Miss them like hell, but they called it quits in the absolute perfect way. Much respect forever.

It's the last song shown performed in the REMTV documentary, so it surely is. What year is this footage from?

In It To Spin It yep. Michael is crying at the end of it. They were the only people in the room who actually knew that it was the last time they were ever going to play together. They are absolutely never going to have a reunion.

Hansa Studios has a long storied history of being the place where many German based acts have recorded at and became successful. Including Frank Farrin's little Milli Vanilli deal, which was working out really good for him. That was until his two so called frontman had to come to the US to accept that Grammy award and everyone discovered that they didn't speak English all that well like the older session musicians did on the record. But anyway, I just "discovered" both this song and their last album "Collapse Into Now" this morning after I thought to search: topic R.E.M. and found their playlist for this album and listened to it. Now, I'm going to have to try and find a copy of it at my local record store, which might be a little hard to do since it was released back in 2011. It is their best album since "Monster" back in 1994. Seriously, I thought Michael Stipe had retired back in 2006. I had no idea that he was still doing media interviews and making his stuff available on here via their topic channel. Amazing how Michael Stipe says one thing, but he does another. But I guess, like a good Capricorn he just can't stay out of the spotlight for very long. I just wish they could have worked out some arrangement with Bill Berry when he retired back in 1997. One that would have had him playing his drums parts in the studio, whilst letting other drummers handle the tours, while he worked his farm. R.E.M. always sounded better when they had someone playing drums for them. Synthesized drums only go so far. Genesis had to do this kind of arrangement for many years. Phil Collins would record his drum parts in the studio, but had to use a another drummer during tours since he was also the frontman of the group. And don't even get me started on either Don Henley or Night Ranger.

If you are just discovering late R.E.M., you might want to check out Accelerate (2008), their most rocking post-Berry album. Type in "Living Well is the Best Revenge," the first song from it, and see what you think. They also made Live at the Olympia (2009), which is an outstanding double live album that includes a lot of great songs from the eighties and nineties. It's absolutely essential. They may have stopped making new music in 2011, but their final three years, which included a magnificent final tour in 2008, showed they were still a very good band.

I’d say Accelerate is a weird place to start if you’re just discovering REM. New Adventures is without a doubt their finest work and E bow the letter their best ever song. A masterpiece.

"The only time we got really poignant was when we were working in Berlin, and they have a beautiful room there, Meistersaal, where we recorded seven or eight songs. There was no one there really except some friends, family, and significant others, and we knew that was probably the last time we would ever play together as R.E.M. That was a pretty fraught day. But it was fun." --- Mike Mills, on this performance and on the making of their final album
