I really struggle with this song. It used to be my favourite song by any band, but I introduced my best friend to them and he loved them. Sadly, he passed away with cancer at 23, so listening to it now without welling up is tricky. I hope you enjoy REM. They're a special band to me.

REM was at the forefront of creating what became in the early 80s College Radio. Bands like REM weren't getting any air play on mainstream radio so it became the task of college radio stations to champion bands like them, U2, The Smiths, The Cure, The Replacements, Husker Du, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello, The Pogues and many more.

Thank you for reacting to R.E.M. live!!! "Its the End Of the World As We Know It" live is a party!! R.E.M. put out 15 studio albums. Some other songs you might like are "Drive" "7 Chinese Brothers" "The One I Love" "Life and How To Live It" There are really a lot more, but take any of these LIVE, and they're incredible! Thank you again! ✌️🎶

Only concert I've ever cried at was their last tour (we didn't know it would be their last at the time). Michael turns his back to the audience and everyone in the band gathers around with acoustic guitars and they played a quiet, solemn version of Let Me In (a song I never liked before because the guitar tone was grating and I didn't know what it was about). It was just unbelievably beautiful.

They were the "darlings of the underground" and the "acceptable edge of the unacceptable stuff." And when they burst into the mainstream, they altered the sound of pop music for nearly a decade. Many 90s acts count R.E.M. as a major influence. Not just musically but how they conducted themselves. They maintained control of their sound. They turned down an offer from a major label early in their career and stayed underground, recording with I.R.S. for several albums because it gave them creative freedom. They were artists first and never tried to be pop stars. And there was a time when everyone listened to their songs. It's odd how they've been forgotten.

Guy told me a funny story once. He said he was stationed in Georgia in the late 80s. His friends would take him to this particular nightclub where REM would often still play. Because they liked the owner. But this guy was a country fan, and had no idea who REM was. And one day he says “This band is good. I bet they will be successful one day.”

To answer your question, back in the day REM was always deemed "college rock", for what that's worth. To quote an article i just found through googling: "College rock refers to the non-mainstream rock music that was popular on college radio in the 1980s. College rock encompassed many genres, including punk rock, post-punk, new wave, synth-pop, and jangle pop. While college rockers were once considered edgy, their music gradually became mainstream. Many of the bands found on college rock playlists-such as R.E.M., the Smiths, the Cure, and Elvis Costello-might now be considered classic rock acts."
