Its super hard to put R.E.M. into any specific genre of music, they are quite unique. Utterly amazing music though, just ridiculously so.

Their style is always different, R.E.M. is known to change style each time. "Losing My Religion" is like saying "Losing his sh*t." "Oh no, I said too much," he's talking about how he told someone he had a crush on too much about his feelings. He feels like he blew it. Actually, lead singer Michael Stipe said that any way you interpret their lyrics, that's the right interpretation!! R.E.M is considered "Alternative Rock."

hard to not like this song. when it came out it was on the radio non-stop and I loved it. I think REM was considered alternative rock back in the day. If you must label it.

I hit this because I like you and this is from the 90s, my teens, it takes a minute, but you have to let it come together, then it makes more sense, REM really was amazing, especially for their time

"I think I thought I saw you TRY" not cry. Losing my Religion is a Southern saying for losing your temper. It's College rock. There was a big push of it in the 80's where "alternative" bands like REM, The Smiths, etc. had their fanbase. Mostly college students that turned each other on to new sounds and acts thru bootleg tapes. No streaming back then, no Spotify, first time I heard Nirvana was a bootleg tape that someone got at one of their shows (in a bar) in Seattle and brought back to Salt Lake with them. Sharing music was different then, it was a communal experience to find anything that wasn't pumped through FM radio or MTV. It's why us X'ers love reaction channels, it's how we always found and listened to music was with other humans, not an app.

REM were the kings of college radio when I was in school. Their later stuff I don’t care for. But everything up to and including the Green album is fire. And a glimpse into the music that forged todays alternative.
