I'll go to my grave listening to these guys. I know probably 30 or so of their songs on guitar. A huge percentage of the songs on my phone are theirs. I only went to 3 of their concerts; wish it had been more. I have most of their recordings. Best band I ever heard -- just an opinion, but that's where I'm at. Rather listen to them than the Beatles, and I grew up idolizing the Beatles.

Fucking A yes, I was born in 1991 and, "Don't go back to Rockville" is the 1st song I remember. They have always been my favourite. I have drifted in and out, such is life. But damn they are amazing.

I am a huge R.E.M. fan and saw them in a club in 1984 when this song was new. They have dozens of great songs but I think if I had to pick just one this would be it.

I find this version really powerful, especially since it's coming from a singer who has grown older singing the song. I remember buying Reckoning when it first came out; it was intriguing, different from anything else out there. The song has a sadder quality now, as I'm an old man in 2019. This version does it justice.

This is a great version. The vocal of Mike Stipe is a more matured and deeper than the original album. Mike Mills bass is just perfect. The piano adds a new dimension to the arrangement, along with the guitar. Bands that can sound as good or better in concert than studio album have real talents and worth our time to cherish and support.

@kristaskrastina286310 ай бұрын
They all were. Without any of them we wouldn't see R.E.M. that great - or maybe at all. Michael Stipe - lead vocals, dancing, chemistry with the audience. And his lyrics are great - both early and late. Peter Buck - lead guitar and mandoline. The reason you can guess an R.E.M. song by ten seconds of it :) Mike Mills - backing (or even lead) vocals and songwriting. I love Rockville. Bill Berry - perfect drums for all above. They were all equally important. That's why they couldn't fully replace Bill Berry - and didn't even try to.

I just watched the David Letterman performance a couple days ago. 2 different bands. One, young, fast, indie, and very energetic. This version is mature, more deliberate, slower tempo and very seasoned. I loved early REM, but between the two versions, I like this one better. But then again, I'm older now, too.

I listened to this and the 1984 version and his voice has changed so much and the overall sound of the band. In the 80s they sounded more like the cure or Echo … now they have more of their 90s/2000s sound … but I do love the official version so much for its 80s sound. God they were something amazing back when they began. Always a great band.

How good were these guys! One jangle guitar, a bass, drums and a singer that was so humble ( I couldn't give a shit if he's gay) with a voice that tears your heart out. These guys put all the glam rock and 80's heyday bullshit to shame. That's what happens when you're articulate, intelligent, have a vision and basically tell the music industry of the time to get fucked cos we doing what we want. The world agreed.
