I class myself as an average REM fan, and started in the late 80s listening to their back catalogue such as Fables, Reckoning etc. Can't believe anyone would slag this. It's delivery and creativity is of the highest order. Of recent years this and New Advintures are my faves. This is a very good track.

My favorite song on Around the Sun...an album that doesn't all together play well as a whole but when mixed in on a shuffle of R.E.M. studio album, complements their songs well.

Totally agree. The songs are too similar for it to be a good listen throughout but in isolation they're all excellent songs.

IMO the first 4 songs are just bloody awful and i have absolutely no idea what they're trying to do. the remaining album isn't so bad and this is a very good song for sure. by this point they're records were not up to the standard they set for themselves between '87-'94 and these nice songs just came from nowhere and it was the very last of anything remotely interesting from these guys. very glad they broke up. it was time!!

The Ascent of Man (from Around the sun) is in the top 3 songs on the album (along with Leaving New York and Aftermath) and sounds like a companion piece to Chorus and Ring from Reveal- you could easily mix the two sings together.

Ascent of man is a great song, arguably the best on Around the sun (although 'Leaving New York' in particular is great too) . The chorus reminds me of 'Lotus' on their 'Up' album which is probably no accident.

With the exception of "Wander Lust", I think it was a great album. The critics be damned. Some of my favorite songs are on ATS. The fans have grown up, and can follow how the band did, too. "Aftermath" is fantastic, as well.

first i was thinking, it was a shame there only were live versions.. but with these kinds of bands, you can't hear the difference, unlike the new Pop, where it may sound rubbish at live concerts.
