R. Hoe Cylinder Press

Printing newspaper on a cylinder press had a huge impact on society. It allowed more stories to be printed, more papers to be distributed, it made more jobs, and inspired more people to read.
Ray Redmayne has been a printer all his life, spending the majority of his career at Maclean Hunter Ltd. Ray spent 4 years restoring this press back to working condition.

We take SO much for granted. We would not be in the highly evolved world we live in today, without men like this, and many others before him, who honed a craft into artistry and made the generations coming afterward even more prosperous in so many ways. This is individual liberty and the right to carve one's path without interference from the state is the backbone of progress.

I found this video on the cylinder press after learning my great grandfather, once editor of The Florida Agriculturalist produced the paper on a Hoe Press between 1874 and 1887 first in Jacksonville and then in a storefront office in Deland. Florida. I was curious about the Hoe Press and was pleased to find plenty of information on it! The press had to be dismantled and moved by steamboat from Jacksonville to DeLand, then reassembled..must have been a notable event at the time! Thanks for your video it was very helpful.

What a wonderful video. I could spend a week talking with Ray and would love to help out, even just turning the press over with the handle, and I've been running and demonstrating old letter presses for years.

Interesting video. I ran a Wharfdale cylinder press when I was an apprentice in the 50s. Better image than a platen press anytime. I became a compositor later and spent 30 years working in various companies in the UK before starting my own litho printing company. I'm still printing, but it's digital now.

It appears to be a single revolution press like a Heidelberg. I didn't know they were invented this early.
