I Will in this comment try my best to explain the different Scandinavian creatures in ways that Jon can understand. Tomte = Gnome. Think a mix between Dungeons and Dragons and Garden Gnomes. They can be either good or evil. However they have a tendency to reward hard work (Like the story where a boy wanted to make a wooden Rose for his mother).

Norway approves. Thank you for providing such beautiful games to our attentiont! :) Fun to see our history put into such great storytelling. Jotun in old Norse means "Troll" or more correctly "Giant". If you ever go to Norway, you really should go to the mountain nationalpark of Jotunheimen. The mythology of these mountains is that it is home to the trolls and giants. Likewise, the Dovre mountains is the home of the King of the Trolls (Dovregubben) with their mighty Dovre Hall. History is facinating :)

OH jon, scandinavian stories hare horrible, mostly to instill values and make kids be cautious, like the nøkken (mentioned in the game as nokk at the begining), its a swamp/water creature that wil drown you if you go to far out, also have you read how odin got his horse? so horrible story warning, basically a jotun made a deal with odin and the gods gang that he woud make them walls for asgard, they didnt want to pay him (he asked alot) but loki said its fine he wil never make it, but the jotun made good time and loki was panicking. the only way to stopp him from reaching the deadline was to get rid of his horse, so loke turns into a mare, and was only going to lure the horse away, depending on what version you are told, intercourse is sugested or that loki got violated by the horse, all version leading to loki giving birth to a gray eight legged horse named sleipner. so oding is technically riding his nephew. so we got som pretty fucked upp stories. i was taught the violated version in 2grade of primary school in norway. and its okay jon we got some ekstra letters in the alphabeth, this was still a lovley experience. also alva is elf, tomte is a nisse, so either like the iclandic julelads or a mischivous goblin
@TheThewildcheese
@TheThewildcheese 4 жыл бұрын
As a fellow scandi, and a buff for the old tales, there's one little inconsistency with the tale. As funny as it is to think Odin riding his technical grandson around... Though there are many versions. Loki is technically not the son of Odin, well not technically at all, he just straight up isn't. That's mainly a modern media thing to my knowledge. He's referred to as blood brother to Odin in the Tale where he accidentally confesses to Balder's murder and his linage isn't directly connected with Odin's... at least not strongly by most sources. So at worst he's riding around on his nephew, at best he's riding around on a half horse quarter Jotun quarter Aesir beast resulted from one of Loki's many schemes. But you're right, The Norse tales are a messy and quite fucked up kind of tale
@kendallchaos
@kendallchaos 4 жыл бұрын
TheThewildcheese exactly technically Loki isn’t even an asgardian (by blood anyway) he’s actually a jotun that saved Odins life if I remember correctly (I’m sure I’m missing a few details as Norse mythology isn’t my strong suit)
@TheThewildcheese
@TheThewildcheese 4 жыл бұрын
I can't quite remember where their actual familiar bond by choice stems from either, it's one of those fragmented myths that's stupid hard to source. But it's a bond of choice and not by heritage, that much is clear. Though saying Loki is a full Jotun isn't completely right either. We don't actually know what his other half is, his mother is never given a origin in the sagas as far as i can tell. It's speculated she could be either Aesir or Jotun. And i mean, giving him a duality makes sense in story telling terms. Easier to be accepted into Aasgard but never having full belonging to it. It compliments his arch into Ragnarok very well.

If you live in the arctic circle as close as you can be to the most northern point, isn't it possible to be snowing longer or most of the time, even in summer? Other then Scandinavian folklore/fairytale I might have missed the location where the house burned.
@johanejp
@johanejp 4 жыл бұрын
@@DarkDutch007 That much snow in the middle of summer is uncommon even in the most northern part of Scandinavia unless you live really high up in the mountains. Even then, the game is most definitely not set in such an area as shown by the dense pine forest. Although, it is possible even for some of the more southern parts to receive a significant amount of snow in June but it's far from the norm.

The bad father is literally named Jötun. Like "Oh there's the adult who's failing to take responsibility for the kids, Mr. Badguy". 24:50 I think it was more like Tove or Lars are the half breed kid, Rövka is in the "Netherrealm" (or utangard?) and sending her ravens to find her kid, find it, and then sends Jætter to get it? Dunno. 28:40 I think it's supposed to be more bear like than bat like. Bears are huge and scary. The bats living in Scandinavia are tiny, and we have little mythology about them. 30:00 älva, elver, elf, typical in forests, but (what have survived of) norse mythology is not that specific. 34:00 I think the ring of mushrooms are also in English mythology, in Danish we call them heksering, witch ring/circle, as the witches must have danced there. I could swear other games also use them as portals, but can't find any myth about it, so it might be a modern game invention. 50:35 The building is a stavkirke, stave church, it looks like a direct copy of the one pictured in the English wiki.
