Please cite the actual research that supports the point about tree roots. Are there comparative field tests that demonstrate that the removal of tree roots is effective and the roots of other plants, shrinkage cracks, and evaporation have on clay soil water content? Compared to sand, how much water is present in the clays at hygroscopic coefficient compared to sandy, silt clay loam? How is the amount of water the tree transpires relevant to the issue? How much water is left in the clay, and how much has it shrunk at the point the tree no longer can remove water (wilting point)? What role do other plants on the foundation side of the barrier play in the removal of water, and what percent of field capacity compared to tree roots? Is there a foundation design that is recognized for use on expansive clay soils?

Doesn’t the root just go under the barrier?

Couldn't you just dig a trench and fill it with concrete? Seems like it would last longer than a flimsy piece of plastic...
