I believe the reasoning behind US troops in Australia is because of the CCP. In the event something does go down, it will need to be all hands on deck for everyone over there. Given the distance between the US and China, having a supply line and troops stationed in the region significantly aids in the logistics and response time. Australia is more than capable of defending itself and fighting back, yes. But having an existing, secure supply line that is difficult to contest is a lot better than having to fight to establish a new one. And more supplies helps with everything. In Ukraine's case, they share a land border with NATO countries, so supplies can go that way. But Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. would have to have a corridor via sea or air. As it stands, the US is one of only a handful of countries with a standing blue-water navy that would be necessary for both of those routes.

Nate, did you somehow forget how bad the Australian wildfires were? Even if that matter isn't a military one having some kind of relief force that can be on site quickly is a better option than having to dispatch them all the way from the states where God knows how many lives could be lost within the time that relief force gets to Australia, as for the troops in Europe I would wager that again its more for a quick response thing in the event one of our allies gets attacked, like what's happening with Israel at the moment Israel likely is viewed by the United States as more or less where Jesus Christ was even born since he himself was Jewish, an attack on Israel would be an attack on Christianity.
