about the cats, lower heights can actually be more dangerous for cats and squirrels because it doesn't give enough time for them to steady themselves via their tails

1:10 The Vietnamese tunnel systems were dangerous. Venomous snakes were sometimes intentionally introduced into them as living booby traps. They were also heavily mosquito infested (because of the standing water which tended to collect in them) and the casualty rates from malaria among the Vietnamese stationed in the tunnels were around 50 %.

LUMO The high a cat falls from the less likely it is to hurt itself. Your cat fell from a short height meaning that it didn't have enough time to adjust it's body mid-air to land properly, so he got hurt. Not to say dropping a cat from 500 stories up is going to result in a.... living cat.

Talking about teachers that left an impression in me, I had an English teacher once that was super nice to me, that was a difficult year, i just came out of the closet as trans in my school, the day before i had talked to the counselor and she gave me permission to put Dante in my tests instead of my legal name, and that class was the perfect opportunity to use it. It was the last class of the day, an easy test, I had to finish it, give it to him and just leave, I was super nervous when I left the test in his desk, he stopped me because I was leaving as fast as I could, he gave one look at my test and said "Dante eh? Congratulations" and I almost fucking cried, he was the first adult to ever call me that, he corrected other teachers, and even though he didn't have permission he changed my name in the list so no one would call me by my dead name

11:10 - Cats can survive a fall at their terminal velocity (which is lower than ours), in the right landing conditions (like, not concrete), but they can get pretty injured along the way. Cats have been recorded surviving 70+ stories. Humans can also survive a terminal velocity fall, but it requires specialized training and purposely shattering all of our bones as we land, so the impact doesn't go into our organs.

Give them enough time, like four or more stories, and they reach terminal velocity and orient themselves to best land on the ground, minimizing or nullifying any injury. But one or two stories? I'm always surprised to hear the 3 floors thing is still around. It is literally one of the classic examples used in almost every statistics class of how studies can be poorly done. They did the study based on cats brought into vets offices, comparing the severity of the injury with the height of the reported fall. The issue being that people don't bring pancakes into the vet which means that data set was extremely incomplete and presented and entirely false conclusion.

It is strength/toughness to weight ratio. Cats and other small animals terminal velocity (especially when they spared out their bodies and increase their surface area) is lower then the failure point of their bones/body. Lower falls are worse for them because they don't have enough time to adjust their bodies to land or to spread themselves out and increase air resistance.

Fun fact cats actually have an in build self-balancing system that instinctively activates when they're falling and that's how they re-orientate themselves to have their paws facing the ground I can't say for certain cuz I'm not an expert and either but I think squirrels also have a similar thing and in the squirrels case they can also survive terminal velocity but cats can't according to google the height and velocity of a cat's fall can affect how likely they are to be able to properly orientate themselves to be facing feet towards the ground in time and whether or not they can walk off the injury after landing

The higher the cat is the more likely that it’s wasn’t injured. They actually tested this and got this results. It’s because they get more time to adjust themselves in the air.

now i had a teacher in 8th grade. her name was mrs. Gardner. she was a great teacher, and she was pretty funny too. one time, we had a fire drill, and i was the last one out, and she goes "wheres AceKalibur? oh well. nobody cares. BURN BABY BURN." that was her words. i did get a soda afterwards though, so that was cool. she also gave me 2 boxes of krispy kreme donuts. unfortunately, the school was completely destroyed in a massive flood. i dont know what happened to mrs. Gardner. i have footage of the flood on my channel if you want to see it.

11:19 The difference between falling six stories and half a story for a cat is that shorter distances give them less time to make adjustments in the air and result in more injuries typically a cat that Falls from six stories will have more injuries than one that fell from 10 or 12 simply because they didn't have enough time to adjust their bodies while in air and sustain more injuries

Here’s some science for you. The farther up cats fall the more time they have to adjust themselves so they won’t get injured when they land. Sorry Lumo, but Favorite did not have enough time to be good at being a cat

That cat is dead unless it got vet attention immediately. A cat that fell from a 4th store will still run and hide wherever it cat but it's because it's badly injured and hiding from predators. They might look fine from the outside, but they are bleeding from raptured organs and broken bones and would die without medical intervention. This is why you are supposed to always install a safety net. Edit: if you know a cat that fell from a very high place and lived or maybe even wasn't injured, that doesn't mean that it is what usually happens.

Completely incorrect. Under 1/3 of cats will die from a fall at terminal velocity (roughly 60mph) which takes them over 5 stories to reach. And most of the rest that survive will do so without injury because of how they stabilise themselves in the air and take the landing.

Not quite terminal velocity, though squirrels can, because cats don't really have a good enough way to slow down, they are just capable of maximizing shock absorbtion to minamize damage

Cats have a better chance of escaping practically uninjured when they fall from, say, six stories, than they do from two stories. This is because they have more time to rotate their bodies and prepare for the landing.

Cats have a low height that is more dangerous than a higher height. At a higher height, they manage to splay out and relax, which makes them much more resistant to damage. Most common injury is a broken jaw in those cases (which that cat might have had =/.). As for humans, we're unfortunatly cursed by larger mass. The surface/volume relationship f's us. Cats are about at the limit I think where that ratio starts making basically any fall dangerous. I think mice can fall from basically any height and survive (depending on other factors ofcourse).

11:13 I don't remember where i heard this, but i think cats can survive falling from very high heights. But if they dont fall from a hight enough height, the fall can kill them. Might have something to do with there not being enough time to reorient their legs and body to cushion the fall.

housecats are WEIRD. They can fall to near terminal velocity and walk away uninjured, but there is a sweet spot (bad choice of words considering the context) where if a cat falls from it they risk breaking bones.

Cats can (usually) land very well from 3 to 4 floors up where as a squirrel would have to fall about 4800 miles (which translates to 7724 km) to die because that is how long it would take them to starve to death and they can survive terminal velocity

@Nutamu

the thing with cats...a short fall like 3 floors can hurt them worse than a fall of 20 floors...because with a short fall they don't have enough time to brace themselves. Of course you can't drop them from an airplane, there's a point where a high fall is too high but I've heard of cats falling from 6 stories just fine but falling 2-3 and breaking something.
