Story 2: she deserved being held hardcore accountable, like imagine being such a terror that you’re rated lowest in the country, that you assault staff, that you make staff scream, that someone investigates you undercover for 2 weeks, that when you get a new job the WHOLE TOWN boycotts that business because you are working there. I’m very surprised someone didn’t knock her out tbh

Story 2: Managers like Tracy are why many retail chains and restaurants have "secret shoppers" come in regularly. Like monthly or quarterly or something. Secret shoppers are folks hired (sometimes from within the company but far enough away that local staff won't recognize them, sometimes from outside the company) to pretend to be regular customers and observe the place. They fill out a checklist or form where they rate that location on whatever is important to higher-ups about the customer experience. Service quality/speed, cleanliness, product quality, staff professionalism, attention to detail, and following company policies/scripts, are common things they look at. Management is generally informed of their store's score after it's been turned in to the bosses, and given recommendations for where they can improve. Or sometimes on who they need to make shape up or fire, if a particular staff member catches their eye in a bad way. It often affects management's performance reviews and bonuses, too. Or for businesses that sell highly regulated products like alcohol or cigarettes, whatever regulatory body oversees those licenses will occasionally send in undercover people to check whether staff follows proper procedure for handling and selling that stuff.
@kristashafer93098
@kristashafer93098 Жыл бұрын
I read a great story once about a secret shopper. OP said they worked in a bodega. A young lady came in and asked for a pack of cigarettes. OP asked for ID. She assured them she was 18 but didn’t have her ID on her. She was trying pretty hard to sweet talk her way into getting the smokes, but OP remained firm. No ID proving she was at least 18, no smokes. She eventually left, empty handed. A few weeks later, the boss asked to see OP privately. It turned out the shopper was 16 and working with the feds going to various shops licensed to sell tobacco products to see if they were following the laws. If OP had caved, the store would have faced a massive fine and lost their license. Boss was so happy OP stuck to their guns, they received a nice bonus.

The problem s that they typically only report good employees who make MAYBE one mistake, most secret shoppers HATE retail and food workers. Because of this, managers and employees have gotten good at spotting them and secretly teach other employees how to do so, as well as warning nearby stores in the chain when they're spotted, including a description of them, so they can be ready for them. Source: I've worked at two fast food restaurants and a gas station and I've watched the managers, including the store manager, write up the email and send it to the other stores.

My store gets a secret shopper a couple times a year. Unfortunately my manager is never on the floor to be audited by the shoppers. Fortunately for him I usually am and I have a A++ score on all my reviews. Little does he know that during the corporate visit next month I'll be submitting my two weeks notice in front of the CFO and Logistics team.

First Story: See this is why u don’t mistreat ur employees, they might screw u over in the long run. I also found Dick's methods of trying to convince OP to stay and work for him is hilarious. He brings up the policy, he claims no one will wait 3 months, he suggested that OP ask his parents or his wife's parents for money; I question how he has his own company in the first place Second Story: Holy hell Tracy sounds like a nightmare. The resturant being the lowest in the country because of one person speaks soooo much volumes about why that person shouldn’t be a manager

If an opportunity so good that I'd be willing to leave the job effective immediately to take the new job came along, I could afford to pay the fee. Hell, I could probably even negotiate to have my new employer pay it if they wanted me that badly. Hell, had something like that happen once. Told the new employer that I could start immediately but asked if I could finish the month at my old job because I would lose a 1,500 dollar bonus if I left sooner. Instead they offered me a 1,500 dollar signing bonus to start right away.

I worked at a Panera that was similar but not as bad as the last story. GM was verbally abusive but secretive about it. Coworker came in drunk/high every day and we had to work on DT together which was pretty much an addition to the original building so private from the rest of the restaurant. Coworker and I got into arguments a lot. Manager teamed up because he had the hots for her. One time she even "accidentally" cut the soup bag incorrectly when I pulled it out of the heating well and burned me so badly. Being 16 I asked if I'm allowed to leave and the GM said to clean up and get back to work. After 2 years of this I was promised the open management role. Some other coworker did so I was upset of course. Then my annual raise came around and offered only 7 cents. Yes. Seven fucking cents. Being 18 by now I applied at UPS because my uncle worked there. I came back in a nice manager was there and informed him of my 2 weeks. Worked as usual for the day. The next day the GM was there and offered suddenly 1.05$ raise. UPS would still be 3$ more so I declined. He then terminated me then and there so I went home for a 2 week vacation. The instant karma was perfect as he scheduled me from open to close all Easter weekend. As anyone who worked at Panera would know that's the busiest day of the year for us. I was then asked by HR the next day about my departure and if I had any concerns they should be aware about. I found this odd guessing there was a whistle blower and they were following up with others I told them about my experience. They apparently saw the manager and mean coworker smoking pot and making out in the DT area around the food. And the GM was demoted to manager at another location. Sorry for the long story just was my first job and smile remembering going to the GMs new location seeing him bossed around

There's a way to get our of any onerous requirement to stay for a long time. Guy I knew in passing worked at a place with something like a 3wk notice required, so figure 15 working days. If you didn't give enough notice, say, 1wk/5d, you'd "owe" 10d to them. Any accrued vacation to pay out would have that deducted, and if *that* wasn't enough, they'd deduct from your final paycheck. Guy got out of that by provoking a hothead manager by just subtly needling him, then quietly told him to f off where no one else heard him. Hothead flipped, fired him on the spot *and* shoved him from behind, so he left and told them he expected to be paid out in full, else he'd report the assault to the cops. Worked.

I have had a really crappy boss when working for the national postal service. If you behaved exemplary, he simply nodded at you before going into his office. However, if you (god forbid) got overburdened by being forced to take on 3 senior employee's duties because "they were so busy" handing out mail from their cars, and you couldn't finish your own mail deliveries after a 14 hour workday, you got yelled at to the verge of tears. I remember one day when I had started my workday 6:30 a.m., and I had to sort all the mail for the car routes before I could even start to sort my own after lunch. I got out on my delivery round at 3 p.m., when all the car routes got back and got to go home. I had to call my boss at 8:30 p.m. to admit that it was so dark that I couldn't read the names on the mailboxes anymore. He *EXPLODED* and started screaming at me to get back to the sorting center immediately. This was also the day that I already had made plans with my then boyfriend, now husband, to do something special for our anniversary, but of course we missed that.

If he didn’t _see_ the work/studying, it wasn’t happening.

@kranberry3318 It seems to be the old school types who also think employees should be loyal to the company who think that way. My mother was like that. No matter how clean the house was, if she didn't see it being cleaned, it didn't happen.

@@MrsShocoTaco God that’s so frustrating. Can’t you just look at it and see it’s clean?? How is that not enough proof?

@kranberry3318 It was kept fairly clean, but one would think the absence of dust would be a clue if nothing else lol

That second story. As someone who has worked a good number of service jobs for both corporate and franchisees. I have never heard of them putting someone into a restaurant to work there as a normal employee and taking action. So it's either bullshit. Or they reaaallly screwed up.

Tracey should consider a job at Wolt delivery. They won't lose money on "hiring" her and she can be in total power of her own income... if she manages to make any, that is.

Reminds me of my old manager. I worked as a stocker in a grocery store and after my chief bullied me he got employee of the month, when he stepped down and a new guy was hired he was an EX con who bullied me and when I reported it my manager told me to leave him alone. Then when he left and I got a third chief, he was openly a pedophile and of course when I reported it, nothing was done. So I walked up to my boss one day and just quit because even my other coworkers saw how badly I was treated. This is just a little taste of what happened there xD it's a long story but thank God I left. Honestly would have loved to get revenge somehow on my manager for being so mean but oh well. From what I heard when I left, they made a new rule about how nobody can ask how my old department was doing and how she would get pissed at just my name being mentioned. Loved the work, loved my coworkers, but really couldn't stand my manager and the boss always took her side xD

In the last story; why would there be a line all the way out of the restaurant if everyone boycotted the restaurant and the reviews was the lowest in the contry?

The second story reminds me of a vetenarian thats still possibly working in the city where Im staying. They're actively so bad at their job and with animals that people actively avoid the place where she works, everytime she changes jobs the boycott moves with her. I heard multiple stories of mistakes that caused pets to die, when they shouldn't have. I found all of this out AFTER my encouter with her, which still pisses me off.

Maybe I'm crazy but I don't think its ok to scream at anyone. I don't care if you're the CEO and you're talking to an intern on his first day, screaming is just disrespectful and no way to treat a fellow human being.
