What Tagore wrote his friend Mr. Pulin Bihari Sen in the year 1937. “…A certain high official in His Majesty’s service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana (abbreviated, JGM) of that Bhagyavidhata [god of destiny] of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense…”

दरअसल ‘जन मन गण’ को लेकर अक्सर कहा जाता है कि रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर ने यह गीत इंग्लैंड के तत्कालीन राजा जॉर्ज पंचम के सम्मान में लिखा था। इस गीत में ‘अधिनायक’ और ‘भारत भाग्य विधाता’ जैसे शब्दों का प्रयोग ब्रिटेन के राजा जॉर्ज पंचम की तारीफ़ करने के लिए प्रयोग किया गया था। कहा तो यह भी जाता है कि साल 1911 में जब जॉर्ज पंचम भारत आए थे, तब कांग्रेस के अधिवेशन में जॉर्ज पंचम के सम्मान में पहली बार यह गीत गाया गया था। क्या है सच? दरअसल साल 1911 में हुए कांग्रेस अधिवेशन में 2 गीत गए थे। पहला गीत रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर द्वारा लिखा गया ‘जन गण मन’ और दूसरा गीत रामभुज चौधरी द्वारा लिखा गया ‘बादशाह हमारा’। असल में दूसरा गीत जॉर्ज पंचम के सम्मान में गाया गया था। उस समय रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर जाने-माने कवि थे जबकि रामभुज को बहुत कम लोग जानते थे। यही कारण है कि अगले दिन ब्रिटिश अख़बारों में छपा की, ‘जॉर्ज पंचम के सम्मान रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर द्वारा लिखा गया गीत गाया गया।’ धीरे-धीरे यह अफवाह फ़ैल गई कि ‘जन गण मन’ ब्रिटिश राजा के सम्मान में लिखा गया था। टैगोर को देनी पड़ी सफाई : आगे चलकर खुद रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर ने इस पूरे मामले में सफाई दी थी। हालांकि उन्होंने यह स्वीकार किया था कि, ‘एक ब्रिटिश ऑफिसर ने जॉर्ज पंचम के सम्मान में गीत लिखने के लिए उनसे कहा था लेकिन मुझे उसकी बात पर गुस्सा आ गया था। इसके बाद ही मैंने ‘जन गण मन’ लिखा था।’ वहीं ‘भारत भाग्य विधाता’ को लेकर हुए विवाद पर टैगोर ने कहा था कि, ‘इसके दो ही मतलब हो सकते है - पहला देश की जनता और दूसरा भगवान। जॉर्ज पंचम कतई भाग्य विधाता नहीं हो सकते।’ आज भी उठता है विवाद : हालांकि यह भी सच है कि रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर की सफाई के बावजूद आज भी ‘जन गण मन’ को लेकर विवाद उठता रहा है। सुब्रमण्यम स्वामी सहित कई लोग ‘जन गण मन’ की इन लाइन में बदलाव करने की मांग कर चुके हैं।
