Exactly! I always go by the rule of "it might be an explanation, but it is no excuse" whenever someone tries to justify any form of harassment, bullying or other bad behavior by claiming it is because of trauma or disability. I personally have a disability similar to autism and I know perfectly well how to behave toward other people. I've known a severely mentally handicapped old man who was practically like a non-verbal, oversized toddler, and HE didn't ever mistreat anyone or do anything worse than try to get their attention by tugging at a sleeve.

I agree entirely. I have friends with autism. You would never think they had autism because they don't try to take advantage of it. I always felt sorry for the customers back when this one kid worked at my store because the managers just let him do whatever he wanted because he had a disability. I'm not even sure what it was but he scream at customers that he was busy just out of nowhere and the manager's just let it happen You can't just let people get away with stuff just because they have a disability

For story 3, let's call it what it is, Sexual Assault. The truth is it doesn't matter if he is autistic. He victimized her for 4 years and the school did nothing. OP should sue the school as well. The school let a boy sexually harass a girl for four years, and forced her to be his "friend" and "caretaker" the whole time just to placate *him* and keep the sexual harasser happy. That's sick. That multiple adults in a position of care over OP blamed it on the boy's autism just so they didn't have to do anything about the situation is, frankly, criminal. Given that he's also gone ahead and sent *rape threats* to her, the lawsuit should be in the bag for OP. I hope she gets paid out a LOT of compensation for putting up with the mental torture of constant sexual harassment from that boy and betrayal of trust from her teachers for four years. She deserves every penny.

If someone has severe enough autism that they genuinely don't understand, which is extremely rare, they shouldn't be in public or private school. This story made me so mad. When I was a teenager, I was groped by a store worker with some type of learning disability (it has been decades, I don't remember what exactly), while waiting at the car for my mom. As soon as my mother came walking out, he backed up, said "don't tell" and ran off. You can't tell me he didn't know he was doing something wrong. Nothing was done about the guy because "he didn't understand", but I never went back near that store again.

Story 3 OP needs to get a lawyer. It’s not just the groping. There’s a bigger picture here. The teachers who were supposed to TEACH Troy and who were supposed to guide and protect these students failed them both HORRIBLY, especially OP. They threw her in the lion’s den, they sacrificed her rights, her mental health, her autonomy, so they wouldn’t have to deal with Troy. They did the lazy, easy thing. Disgusting. Vile. Unforgivable. Story #3: So glad OP got out of that situation with Mr. Rapey. It's appalling, yet totally believable, that the school just ignored it. Troy's gonna end up dead or in prison because he's bound to encounter someone who responds to that behavior on the nuclear level and all of those enablers will cry and wring their hands about the tragedy of it all. Story 3, I had the exact same experience with a low functioning autistic kid when I was around 9-10 years old. He kept on trying and trying to grope me and no one did anything - He tried to do it class, outside, in the gym, at lunch, at my own home, at his house... Anywhere! One day when we were outside at break he came up behind me and pulled my dress up to slap my ass. I was completely taken aback and began screaming and shouting at him to leave me alone already. Some kids from my class saw that I made him cry and have a panic attack because I shouted at him and then everyone turned on me, even the teacher! Whenever I tried to tell someone about it, even his mum, nobody did anything because "Boys will be boys" or "He has a crush on you!" or "He's autistic. He doesn't know any better." so I just gave up. It was a big mistake to do that. My mum would sometimes make me hang out at his place because we were both the same nationality and she and his mum thought it would be a great idea to leave us alone so we could 'bond'. The 'bonding' turned into him almost raping me at his own house. I still remember how he tried to pull my tights off me so he could get to me but I was fast enough and I ran downstairs to his mum in the kitchen. Even after I told my parents what he did, even after I told the teacher what he did, even after I tried telling *anyone* what he did they blamed me because I never let him have a chance with him! I was 11 and so close to being raped and no one did a thing about it because he was autistic. OP did nothing wrong at all in the story. OP did what I should've done when I was 11 though I am still thankful that I managed to get out without being assaulted.

I can totally relate to OP and story 3. In the seventh grade, I was groped by a kid who was 'special' ( Aspergers) and just like her, no one would help me because of it. There was one thing I knew I could do even though I absolutely hate it more than anything but I decided to use my race to finally make it stop. Story 3 just brought back years of trauma for me. When i was 16 I started dating an autistic guy, and he used that autism to coerce me into doing things long before I was ready to. He acted like my blatant discomfort and very clear "I dont think i'm ready for this" comments meant "Say a reassuring sentence and then take me back to your place anyways." Because of my apparent indirectness when i would say "maybe" and then back out, i was accused of being a manipulator and of "playing with his head." Eventually after weeks of him treating me like crap whenever I didnt want it, I felt like the only way to be loved was to put out. Aaand that lead to some real big ick memories. Autism isn't an excuse, some people just want to use it as one so that they can hurt people without any fear of consequence. I had a classmate who was my siblings brother who had autism. He would harass me, grab me and just make me uncomfortable. I'm autistic and the 3rd story is just mindblowing to me.... if he had done the same thing to every girl in his life then I could understand that he didn't understand the consequences or the effects, but still, someone should've done something. She was obviously targeted and he clearly knew what he was doing. I would've punched him more than once lol

Story 3: can relate to this in a way as there was a kid in my high school with autism and he would constantly pleasure himself during class. I remember reporting it but it was ignored. He did actually fetishized a girls feet too a classmate and she was distraught….People have to learn that doing stuff like this is horrible. People need to actually teach kids not to do such disgusting things.

I have been in a teaching position with kids on the spectrum, and the idea that they don't know what they are doing is very ableist. They might have a harder to time to read ques from other people, but they can still learn and understand right from wrong. Unfortunately a lot of people, especially parents, tend to cuddle their kids if they are on the spectrum. Treating them as infants when they are way past that age.

Groper story: good on OP. There is no excuse for Troy to do this. He has been totally enabled into keeping this up. The bruises are painful, the mental scarring is worse. Story 3: as an autistic person, there are 2 things that make me upset when I hear stories about people with autism. One of them being this exact problem. Not all autistic people are the same. They can live productive and normal lives. I myself have had people be a little shocked when they find out im autistic. He KNEW better and was using his autism as an excuse. I have NEVER EVER used mine as an excuse. My mom taught me that and I'm grateful. I absolutely despise parents that baby their child bc they have autism. You're just causing more problems to appear down the line by babying them. That being said, some autistic people do have problems picking up social cues, BUT, they can still learn what to look out for in people's body language that says they're uncomfortable. Also, shame on the teachers at that school!!!!!!!

I have an autistic daughter. And there’s one thing I did when I found out, was read stories from the siblings of autistic kids because that’s where you’re going to get the most authentic version of what’s actually going on. parents will always try and soften the blow, but the siblings aren’t going to do that. And because a lot of them are neglected, but not bad kids I feel like maybe slightly but they’re probably not over exaggerating if they’re reaching out because of the responsibility they were always expected to give, they’re usually more mature and only reaching out on places like Reddit for a reason, and a lot of the times they expressed that their siblings know a lot of things that they’re doing is wrong, but because they can get away with it, They keep doing it. SO if my daughter came home with a broken nose and I heard it was because she was groping another student and asked to stop she would be reprimanded. She’ll know that’s wrong, and I know she will because I’m going to teach her that. I’m not gonna be dismissive because a lot of autistic kids do get babied and I’ve noticed that. And I don’t feel like it’s a reason to baby somebody because they just need to learn differently. They’re not as disadvantaged as people play it off as,just because the way they need to be taught is different. In fact, a lot of autistic kids are very very good at whatever they decide to hyper focus on, you just you gotta as a parent be present so what they get exposed to hyper focus on is positive and constructive.

I have ASD, and I have to call BS for people saying that Troy doesn't know better when it comes to harrassment. He knows what he's doing and he doesn't care. He should be pulled from the school and put into a special school for trouble children. And the school should be sued for allowing that behavior to go on for years without doing anything about it except punishing the victim.

Congratulations OP on the bariatric surgery and the positive steps to a new you! One word of advice: please consider therapy as well. Usually the two are keys to success. A good friend had it and it helped her immensely- she looked amazing. But she never got therapy about her relationship with food. And during the pandemic she gained it back plus more (I think because she never addressed using food to self medicate). Just take care - it’s not a magic bullet and still requires some work. Story 3; When i was in middle school there was a boy with autism who would blow up and become violent because his parents wouldn't get him proper care. Instead of helping him, they would depend on another little girl who "was his girlfriend" to calm him down. She would be pulled out of other classes and have to play therapist. I'm 23 now, and that boy contacted me recently to tell me he was always in love with me. I said I appreciate the compliment but im in a relationship. He then would tell me to kms and that im a slut and no one loves me. So...

The only reason the parents want OP to drop the suit is because they know the "he's autistic" excuse won't stick in court. Any psychologist worth their salt, especially a child psychologist, will tell you that's BS. They obviously coddled him because of his condition, and that made him feel invincible. And although OP said that she was singled out, I'm willing to bet she's not the only one. Given how she described his behavior, he's definitely done it to other girls as well. They just haven't spoken out because he's "the popular kid" and "autistic." Here's hoping that his other victims will come forward when the court date comes and bring his true colors to light.

My older brother and my son are both on the Autism Spectrum. Just because a child has Autism doesn't mean you need to baby them and that they can't learn to be decent human beings! My older brother is higher functioning and intelligent, he HATES crowds and the vast majority of physical contact. My son is on the lower functioning/developmentally delayed side, doesn't mind small crowds as much (more so if he doesn't know them) and will seek out physical affection from myself or his grandma. Yet they learned that just because people do things they doesn't like doesn't mean they can act out. My son, who is only turning 20 next month so he's still learning, but my brother has learned that people will people and to just walk away and use coping mechanisms. Neither my parents nor I would have allowed any of "Troy's" behaviors to continue, ESPECIALLY since it started so young that nipping it in the bud would have made correcting his behavior/attitude and teaching new and better ways to behave so so much easier than it is going to be now. Not that i have any faith in his parents trying to teach him anything.

Story 4: This story reminded me of my grandpa. He died a couple of years ago, and recently my grandma revealed a long held family secret. My grandpa was not my mom's biological dad. Apparently grandma and grandpa dated for a while, then broke up. A while later my grandma dated someone else, and after a while she got pregnant. Upon learning about this that other guy took off and refused to talk to my grandma. She gave birth to my mom and raised her alone for a while until a mutual friend of my grandma and grandpa schemed and basically tricked them in to going on a date again. So they got back together. Apparently grandpa loved my mom from the day he met her. And when she started talking and called him "dad" he also cried from happiness. He adopted her and raised her as his own daughter. She was a total daddy's girl her entire life. And funnily enough, people always said she looked a lot like him. Turns out that was because her biological dad looked a lot like grandpa. I guess grandma had a type. Mom never found out about her biological dad until the rest of us did. I don't really care about that other guy though. He was not my grandpa. He's not the one who watched cartoons with me as a kid. Who fixed my bike when it was broken. He's not the one who taught me how to order a beer and curse in several languages when I was like 8 years old. Or the man who introduced me to whiskey (and left me his whiskey glasses after his death). No. That was my grandpa. And learning that this was something he chose for himself just makes me appreciate that man way more.

3rd story: I'm autistic and since I was 6 I help in y father's farm. I was never babeid and that's why I turned out fine. the teacher justify bad behavior with autism which the court system several times found autistics people guilty and the judge did not take autism as an excuse

1st Story: That is an example of "Fuck around and find out." That kid is old enough to know not to do what he did. But instead he chose to fuck around and then he found out. 2nd Story: Yeah not the outcome any of us was hoping for because what Op's husband said to her, that's a deep cut right there. I do hope things work out for her but if it doesn't then at least you tried to fix things op. 3rd Story: If Chris Chan can teach us anything that's just because you have autism doesn't not make it ok to get away with committing crimes. You dont just let them grope people because everyone has a right to not be touched. So im absolutely disgusted that anyone would allow a minor to be treated like that

Living in a country where most things except eyes and teeth are covered by the provincial health insurance that I don't even notice because it's mixed on with the rest of our taxes, I can't imagine why anyone other than the very rich would want to pay for private insurance.
