That could nearly have been us approx 20 years ago, on that same river, but we had a bus driver who did not take risks. The bus was much smaller back then, 4wd very high clearance and nimble as a mountain goat (it was less touristy back then). The river crossing was fine going over. Stayed in a mountain hut a couple of days but we had torrential rain for most of that time. When it was time to leave we came down to the river but the river was really in spate, and looked totally different - now an angry, raging torrent. The bus driver said no way! We spent another night at the hut. Next day the river was down a bit, but not enough. We waited quite a few hours as the waters went down more. The driver then thought that it might be possilbe, but decided to get a local farmer who knew the river really well to check for and drive his tractor over a possible route. They decided it was possible. We could feel the bus lifting at times, but we made it over.

A few years ago, I was standing in front of the large ford on Springinsandur with my sidecar. No traces of a car in, no traces out. Fast water and knee-deep. We turned around. It was too risky for me. . .

In the morning this river tends to be low, but in the afternoon, sun melts the glacier and the river rises. So you can usually get across in the morning and then discover you cannot get back across. Still, it is one of the nicest places to be stuck (Thorsmork).

I don’t understand why they took so long to get a line on it! If they had done that straight away before the river eroded the ground under the wheels they would have towed it out no problem with the tractor and Nissan Patrol. Instead they faffed around doing I don’t know what and let it sink in making job 20 times more difficult!

The problem was that it was not possible to tie a rope to the bus because there were no hooks or fasteners to tie it to. The front end of the bus was all plastic and they couldn't find any hooks to tie the rope to. They couldn't get under the bus to tie up due to the force of the river. The bus was stuck with the brakes on in the river and the engine was broken.

Why did they put the bus in the river?
@lostmoose99948 ай бұрын
Thats one of the most challenging river crossing in Iceland to get to a hostel on the other side. Busses used to be converted 4 X 4 trucks with high clearance, but since many roads in Iceland got paved they seem to use ordinary busses. 30 - 40 yrs ago there was no bridges anywhere (almost) and sometimes they drove in rivers because there was no road.
@hntrains28 ай бұрын
@@lostmoose9994, thank you for the explanation! I find it odd to see something like that happen in a country in Europe. Perhaps, they should take a loan and get some roadwork done?
@lostmoose99948 ай бұрын
Iceland was pretty much that way all over the place until end of 90ies. Then they started road construction big time and the country lost its charme and attraction for 4 X 4 tourists. (Like me). Its of course convienient for folks who live there. Thorsmoerk where this bus got stuck - and sone other places will not get developed because of too few residents and rivers would rip bridges away each spring. In the South of Iceland, they got very long bridges built in segments which the river can break and then they just plug the segments together once the flood has oassed through. I recommend to search for "trucking in Russia/Sibiria" if yoj wanbs see real offroading and brutal river crossings.

@@hntrains2 Bridges make no sense there. The course of the river is always changing. These are glacial rivers. A few years ago I rode my motorcycle through the large ford in the middle of the F26 on the Springinsandur. A few years later it looked completely different, deeper and wider. . .
