As a disabled person I think a general rule of thumb is this. If a disabled person is making a joke about their disability, it's ok to laugh. If a non disabled person is making a joke at the expense of a disability, they are trash. Edit: I wanted to clarify. If a non disabled person is making an actively harmful joke about a disability that plays into stereotypes, they are trash. I have an invisible disability so people (mostly on the internet) assume I'm abled. If someone says they have something you need to take into account how they act or how they talk about it. Do they make it seem tragic or go off of stereotypes to make jokes not based in reality and other people with that disability call it out? Do they talk about it that's educational or talk about it like another trait they have like eye colour? Do they complain about or remain silent about the stereotypes? A lot goes into it. If you're unsure if someone is faking or making a harmful joke, don't do anything. Other people who have that disability will call it out if it's fake or harmful. Don't have a savior complex.

See, my view is that if someone is secure in who they are then they can laugh at themselves, even if it's someone else making the joke. It's common for friends to tease each other, and _anything_ that makes you different is a prime target. It's all in good fun, and you should be giving as good as you're getting. Plus, making a joke out of something is a way of downplaying it and saying that it's not important, that the things that make you different don't hold you back from being counted as an equal. Taking something seriously gives power to it, and more specifically _gives it power over you._ Yes, some people are mean on purpose, but that doesn't seem to be what we're talking about.

@@thesatelliteslickers907 Honestly, it kind of reminds me of the people who get harassed for using a disabled parking space, when they are in fact disabled, but just don't have a visible disability. Heck, how often have we seen people on the internet get accused of bigotry against X, except oops, it turns out they _are_ X. So either we have to assume that they're bigoted against themselves (and yes, some people double down like that), or that what they did wasn't actually bigoted, so if someone who wasn't X did the same thing, it wouldn't be bigotry either. It kind of boils down to what some Greek philosopher said: "I know that I know nothing." The wiser you are, the more aware of your own ignorance you become. You don't know anything about some stranger you've never met before. You don't know what they went through growing up, you don't know what kind of day they've had, you don't know what they might have going on in their life. Maybe someone acting like a dick is just going through something rough, and really needs a hug. But no, everyone is so hateful, so ready to crucify someone over the slightest misstep. The people preaching tolerance the loudest are the most hateful, bigoted, and intolerant people I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. Absolutely no thought for anyone other than themselves and what _they_ want, all while acting like they're some kind of hero. I truly hope these people can realize that they've gone astray and turn their lives around. Otherwise, they're going to be angry and miserable their whole lives. And honestly I'm getting sick of their crap and have little patience or sympathy left for them.
