Use whatever the people in your office use. Better to keep the tech stack small. When in doubt, use python because it's more popular. Python will be dead in 10 years but it's all the rage for now.

It's not correct when you say Python is more focused on software programing than Data Science. Python is "clearly", I mean by far the most used programing language in ML and AI which is the basis in DS in 2020. Now, R and Matlab are trying to survive to Python. In fact Matlab is dying...
@TheCareerForce4 жыл бұрын
Python _IS_ a general purpose programming language. That's it's background and it's still used heavily for that. That doesn't mean it's bad for data science/analytics though. It should be clear if you watch the whole video that Python is an excellent choice for data science and the option I think is right for a lot of people.

Thanks for this video ... I am currently learning R.. I feel I enjoy it more as it fairly easy to understand ... maybe it is because R was the first programming Language I started learning .. Also in terms of Open CV ,CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) and Image recognition...I think python is the better choice for me. On the other hand in terms of core statistical analysis which involves EDA (Exploratory Data Analysis) and building ML (Machine Learning) models I prefer using R .

I have always been torn out on which of the two languages R and python to learn but now you have given me the correct answer. I had already started on R but now I realise the industry you choose to program for determines the language to first start out with and master b4 moving to another. Thanks

Thank you for this video. I think another factor we should consider is availability of learning sources around us. Since I study in Medicine, R is more common and there are many videos providing statistical knowledge along with practical R code in both textbook & paper to reproduce. => Having R would be a better choice for me at the moment. But Python & SAS would definitely be in my future list.

I was and I am learning R 'cause of my economics degree AND I recommend python really. I love R language (most 'cause of being lazy to learn others);however my job is asking me to master python. Even though R has many cool packages like AER or uqr, the truth is that not only is python much more friendly for programmers but also it doesn't need such advance statistic models in business. In real business (at least in mine), managers value a model that can predict rather than explain and that is why ML and python dominate industries. (I do not mean all MLs' parameters can not be explained but it's an undoubted fact that MLs are relatively black-box than traditional statistic models)

Continuing from my previous comment, if your goal is to become a data scientist or analyst then maybe python might be a natural chocie, but if you want to learn data analyst skills to apply to your current job then I believe R may be a better choice. Since R was built mainly to analyse data, it does not necessarily require you to be a good programmer. You can use the manay packages available to get the job done. I work in HR as a learning and development professional and i love using R to analyse training data.

Hi Mobolaji! I am currently a graduate student in industrial-organizational psychology and am debating whether or not to start an edX or Coursera certification on data science with R. Right now my current career interest is people analytics. Could you please give me more insight as to whether I should or shouldn't take this route and how beneficial and advantageous learning a program like R would prove to be?

Honestly I prefer Udacity. Georgia Tech literally uses Udacity to administer their MS of CS. Which language to learn is kind of a dumb question. Focus on statistical and data concepts rather than code. Flip a coin for R vs Python (Anaconda) and whatever you get learn it extremely well. Build a useful portfolio project that you love to talk about, and that other people besides you find helpful. No employer is going to reject you because you picked the wrong one. You're finding the choice hard because it just. doesn't. matter.

What people don't mention is that the data science side of python is pretty much run in pandas and/or numpy, which depart significantly from the usual way you interact with data in basic python. Python is a scalar language, not a vector language like R. These packages force that round peg into a square hole, in some cases quite awkwardly. For that reason, data science in python is not so obvious and easy to learn as basic python is.
@chacmool25812 жыл бұрын
R or Python It's not an either-or. It's both. That's right. Your competition in the job market will be people who are proficient in both. And frankly speaking, any competent Data Scientist should know both.

Great explanation and walk through of the different options. Python has a lot more advantages than R, but R great for the statistical side ,so should be used more if just looking for that. One thing Python great for is the graphical user interfaces, can help rolling out data analytics applications in an organisation!

Hi, thanks for the helpful recommendation. I would like to ask you a question about an "absolute" beginner to learn Python. I've done a few introductory courses at datacamp, and 1) I keep forgetting commends (although I review them a lot of times.) and 2) even if I remember stuff, I don't really know what to do with them. I take memos on things I understand, but I don't think I am getting a "picture" of stuff I learn. I do not know whether this problem is because I am just not a "data science" guy or because I am missing an important step or way to study at datacamp. I keep proceeding the courses according to their career track now with patience, hoping that I will be able to truly "see" and "use" what I learn at some point, but I really don't know whether I should do so. Could you give me an advice regarding to my problem? Thanks!
@stanford194 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. I was actually learning both in parallel, but what you said about becoming a master is true. I was mastering both and it was taking time, but I will focus on Python (emboldened by your verdict as well as my own preference for Python. It's just so beautiful as a language, and it makes so much sense, the way the built it. I just wish I could use Pycharm to do everything data science, because right now the Jupyter notebook plugin is a Pro feature, sigh.) Thank you once more! EDIT: I will check through your videos for this but just in case you haven't done a video on it: What are the tools that you recommend learning for corporate work (I am graduate) that I would most likely have to use as a Data Scientist in a company? ( I am currently using Spyder, but I don't imagine this is the actual tool? It seems lightweight even though it's great...)

Hi Jan! Thanks for these valuable information that you keep doing. @TheCareerForce4 жыл бұрын
Basic knowledge is a good start. Your SQL knowledge will transfer well to SAS. You'll still want to build up your skills over time. It can raise concerns when you use a little bit of a lot of languages and not much of any one (jack of all trades / master of none) so be aware of that as you continue building skills.

@bolaowoade4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what you are learning the language for. I don't necessarily think python is better than R for data science. What's driven is popularity is a number of things. To start with it is a general purpose language which means it's much more known and popular than R. To start with it is now used to teach beginner programming courses in secondary schools, colleges and universities. The reason is the fact that many people who would have gone in to computer science are not moving in to data science type roles. There is a higher probability that they would have come acroos python and it would be a natural language for them to learn. And because python is a general purpose language then it's easier to build prodfuction ready systems and companies are going to generally prefer it.

I took a semester of Python in college. You mentioned SAS, what exactly is that? I've heard of it before but I have no idea what it is or how it's used. Is it a type of software or a programming language?
@TheCareerForce4 жыл бұрын
SAS is a programming language focused on analytics, and they are also a software. They have options that range from a purely coding interface to dashboard tools similar to Tableau to options that let you do more complicated queries with a minimal knowledge of programming. The language itself is closest to SQL. They're not open source and can be quite expensive which is part of the reason that they aren't as dominate across the board. They have some fantastic tools though. SAS is the language I know the best and there tools are very well executed.

@@TheCareerForce so I just can't go on Amazon and order a SAS programming book? You're saying I probably need to learn it in college? @@davidlanier7006 You can still learn SAS outside of a school environment. They even offer some training free on their website (plus more in depth classes). They have a free edition for learners here: www.sas.com/en_us/software/university-edition.html I mentioned the cost because it impacts the industries they're in and makes the training options more limited. You can absolutely learn it outside of college setting though. You'll see the language itself often referred to as Base SAS.

Check out a data analyst/science role at Facebook or Google, and you'll see! :) Python is great because it's a popular programming language in general. However, R is still super robust. The Pandas library in Python has a lot of similar syntax to R for selecting/manipulating data frames. I personally love R.
