Matti Salminen is home in Finland the most brilliant Daland of all.

This recording was made when Juha Uusitalo was still an insider tip at the beginning of his international career. And what wonderful Holländer he was. Not only by his vocal stature but also by his physical presence. In my eyes one of the greatest interpreters of this role in modern times. The rest of the cast range between acceptable and disputable.

I hate the modern costumes. But the arrival of the Dutchman's ship is done quite well, and the ship itself looks commendably authentic and historic.

Dan Karlström is the helmsman. He has a remarkably distinctive voice and an equally distinctive way of singing the "Hohohe! Jolohe! Hoho! Ho! Ho! " syllables in his song. I have never heard them sung this way and they seem absolutely right. He stands out in a relatively small part .He also seems to develop a character fairly quickly so the helmsman actually has a personality here. I would like to know more about him. The Dutchman's ship entry in Act I is remarkable -especially given the fact it is an outdoor performance. It is one of the more dramatic ones I have seen. There is however, no doubt for me that the best Dutchman crew in Act III is the one in the Joachim Herz film

An outdoor performance, in order to reach what is probably a very large audience, would require mics. They can't be seen from the audience perspective I imagine, and only on the close ups in the video.
