Crazy to think the R46s replaced the R1/9 cars during the 1970s. Now the R46s themselves are currently being phased out. Great video and thank you for posting.

Most of the R1-9s were built by Pullman Standards, so it’s possible to have those be pushed by older fleet still in service

Technically speaking. The couplers on the R1/9s and R46s are not the same and therefore are not physically compatible. Therefore, a coupler adapter was most likely used and installed on the R46’s HT4-U93 coupler to be physically compatible with the R1/9. The cars can only do a mechanical add (Iron-to-Iron) as they aren’t electrically compatible with each other. Also, if you’re wondering.. Yes the R46s do feature coupler adapters specifically for the couplers they utilize. The coupler adapter is located at the #1 end bonnet on the bottom right-hand side opposite of the step ladder. Some R46 A-Cars may or may not always feature a coupler adapter, just like how New Technology Trains don’t also have coupler adapters for every A-car, hence why there’s a sticker on the cab’s storm door stating that there is “no coupler adapter in this car.”

@@TSSminaconsidering all the R46s I rode on E and F trains, never saw a sticker about an adapter. Though I can attest that the 46's coupler is more of a bullet design to go into the other half.
@TSSmina5 күн бұрын
@ Yeah.. Weirdly enough, R46s that don’t have coupler adapters don’t even have an associate sticker related to it but, it’s pretty noticeable from the outside, looking at the coupler adapter compartment.

@TSSmina R46 have HT4-U93 couplers. Ohio Brass couplers are on the tech trains.

Still possible holiday rides are subject to change the last week of December with another possible A/D shutdown, which would be an issue is the train is based at 207th and also A to 96th in case. But with 8th Avenue CBTC online in 2025 and 6th Avenue CBTC due to be awarded with congestion tolling resumed, this might be the last year to catch the R9s. By 2026 certainly the D will have a full CBTC fleet with option I and 6th Avenue CBTC (a high priority item named by the MTA chairman with the dated 1930s signals on a main line) will be underway, with frequent weekend reroutes.

Both trains needed to transfer from Pitkin to 207th St Yard, so they were sent up in the same train to make things more efficient. Great example of efficient planning of non-revenue movements!
