R1200RT Side Case Disassembly And Lube

When the side case on my BMW R1200RT wouldn't open recently, I knew it was time to take it apart and inspect the lock and internal mechanisms for problems. Fortunately I was able to get the pannier open, and expose the screws inside for disassembly. After cleaning, greasing and making a linkage adjustment, the case handle snaps open nicely now. This example is from a 2012 model year, other model years may vary.

Nice video, very useful thank you. While the oe bags do look and feel good they are very heavy and seem to be unnecessarily complicated. Mine live on brackets on the garage wall 95% fo the time.

If you use the bike mostly around town the bags are probably not that useful. I use my RT for long trips, so I do keep them on all the time.

Nice video. My cases seem to be working just fine at the moment but think I'll service the locking mechanisms in my cases the same. After all, as you said, not being able to open the luggage on a trip would be highly undesirable. 👍

Yeah, being thousands of miles from home is not where you want to find a stuck case. Mine was also working fine, until suddenly it wasn't. It really doesn't take that long to do.

Thanks for the important information. Question, my boxes do not fit snugly to the bike. The rear mounts on both sides are loosely fitted? Is that normal? Thanks again.

The cases can get loose. You may find that you can use adhesive felt or rubber to tighten up the fit, either by applying some to the bottom catch area or to the upper support posts. You have to watch that it doesn't get too tight, though, or you'll have trouble getting them off the bike.
