A trick for the pilot bearing, if you have a loaf of bread use a single slice without the crust and maybe a sliver of water if necessary, pack it in and you can use a 3/8" ratchet extension either 3-6" and tap the bread in, when it pops out you just pull out a clump of bread and its the easiest cleanup without the grease mess.
@davewm95896 жыл бұрын
as you start the pressure plate bolts wiggle the clutch alignment tool at the same time, you want it to stay loose all the way thru the bolt tighten process. Re check to make sure it goes in very easy after everything is buttoned up before fitting the trans.
@dannewton85896 жыл бұрын
I didn't see whether you applied thread locker to the flywheel or pressure plate bolts, but if you didn't, I'd recommend it. My mate had a flywheel bolt come loose and shoot around his bellhousing. Not mad. The other thing that is usually done when mating an R154 to a JZ engine is you bolt the flywheel to the engine and slide the clutch and pressure plate onto the input shaft on the R154. Then you bolt the transmission to the engine, slide the clutch disc up to the flywheel and do up the pressure plate bolts through the inspection holes in the bellhousing. Doing it that way makes it simple to bolt the gearbox to the engine and impossible to miss align the clutch disc as it's on the input shaft when you bolt up the pressure plate. Hopefully that makes sense! Otherwise you're doing a great job, props!
@StewartMotoring6 жыл бұрын
Yea, I didn't show it but I did apply thread locker to both the flywheel bolts and the pressure plate. I saw someone install the transmission the way you describe... it just seems to be harder that way. Idk though havn't tried it

As always, you do a great job! My friends think I'm going too far with my 240z resto-mod, doing too much "little stuff," but when you've something apart it makes total sense to replace things like the main seal and the pilot bushing, and especially if you have some extra time to find new clutch bolts. I'm using grade-8 hardware to put my rear suspension together and I think it's a relatively cheap way to have some piece of mind. Thanks for filming and sharing all of this!

Definitely, I actually replaced my suspension bolts with grade 8 bolts as well from a local Rural King haha. Pay by the pound. Made things cheap but strong too! No more rusty bolts.

MyBlueZed that Think center the clutch on te center of the flywheel so that tool coms with clutch kit I think is plastic when you install presure plate you need that tool to center the clutch so tranyy fits inside in the clutch and pilot bearing sory for my english.
@StewartMotoring6 жыл бұрын
That's correct Jeton. It's called the clutch alignment tool and yes it comes with the kit. You leave that in until you are ready to put on the transmission. It keeps the clutch disk center of the flywheel and pressure plate so it doesn't fall down until you are ready to bolt up the trans. And yes I removed it lol.

Hello - you are missing two rings from the opposite side when you flipped the flywheel over … please look up Toyota diagram. One is a cone shaped one and one is a flat washer. If you notice your pressure plate wiggles when you’re spinning it when you’re done, it shouldn’t have that play.

Hey man, just wanted to let you know that you installed the clutch disc facing the wrong way!!
@StewartMotoring6 жыл бұрын
Ahhh but I didn’t. You can see in the vid there is a sticker on the disc that says “flywheel side” and when it’s installed you can’t see it 😁
@nikitagerasimov27436 жыл бұрын
I saw the sticker, and I assumed you installed the disc in the way the sticker indicates it, but usually, that middle portion which is completely flat should be facing the flywheel and the portion that sticks out a little - transmission. As you mentioned, it is a cheap eBay clutch kit. They could have placed the sticker on the wrong side. I just replaced the clutch on my Toyota Altezza with the racing one from Exedy, the disc goes in the way I said.
@StewartMotoring6 жыл бұрын
If they put the sticker on the wrong side... then yea I can't help that. Just followed instructions. I reached out to the company and asked them to verify. I'll let you know on their response.
@dannewton85896 жыл бұрын
After watching it again, I agree it's installed backwards. Any clutch I've ever installed the flat side faces the flywheel and the raised center section is towards the transmission. That being said, I've never installed a clutch where the disc can fit backwards because they foul on the flywheel, that includes my R154 to 1jz I did a few months ago.
@StewartMotoring6 жыл бұрын
Hey just wanted to let you guys know that yes, the manufacturer put the sticker on the wrong side. I really appreciate you guys letting me know. I have pulled the trans off and switched the disc. Still working. I haven’t been harsh on it yet with clutch kicks and burnouts etc. but I’ve done many highway pulls or pulls in general and still works fine. Very aggressive though, I’m about to change my mc size to a smaller one to see if it gives me more engagement travel for easier street driving. Right now it’s either engaged or not lol. Very tough to not kill it.

@StewartMotoring3 жыл бұрын
It’s already a 3/4 wilwood mc. I’m lowering it to a 5/8ths. While a 5/8ths will increase line pressure more travel will be needed to make up for the reduction in fluid. Which is what I’m hoping is the case. I’ve got it, just need to install.
